Avs slip by Canucks in OT By Karen Price
Camera Sports Writer Peter Forsberg had been uncharacteristically absent for all of Game 3 against the Vancouver Canucks. He made his presence known when he most needed to, though. The Super Swede got a turnover deep in Vancouver's end, skated across the blue line, waited until Vancouver goalie Bob Essensa dropped, then flipped the puck over him for the game-winning goal 2:50 into overtime. Forsberg's first goal of the playoffs and his first in 14 games gave the Avs a 4-3 win and a 3-0 lead on the best-of-seven Western Conference Quarterfinals series. Fans were already upset over a controversial call just before Forsberg's goal on Todd Bertuzzi that negated a Vancouver power play just as referee Mick McGeough had raised his arm to penalize Colorado's Steven Reinprecht for interference. Just before Forsberg scored, Avalanche defenseman Steve Reinprecht was called for hooking. After the whistle, Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi received a roughing penalty from referee Mick McGeough to negate the Vancouver power play. "I thought they got a little mixed up," Forsberg said of the Canucks, who scored the first goal for the third straight game. "Every game we've had has been tight and we're fortunate to pull it out."

82. Devils Push Avs To Brink
and they capitalized on them, Colorado defenseman greg devries said. something for your hockey club, but our main goal is winning the Stanley Cup.

Devils push Avs to brink By Karen Price
Camera Sports Writer DENVER With Monday night's 4-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils in Game 5 at the Pepsi Center, the Avalanche must win the last two games of the series if it is to claim the Stanley Cup. Lose either in New Jersey on Thursday or back in Denver on Saturday, and the Cup will remain in New Jersey another year. The Devils twice took advantage of odd-man rushes and also scored a power-play goal to take a two-goal lead on the Avs early in the second period, and that score stood until John Madden put the nail in the coffin with 1:55 left in the game. The Devils now have a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. Avalanche forum It was the Avs' worst loss of the postseason. They had not trailed at any point in the playoffs by more than one goal until Monday night. This is also the first time the Avs have trailed in a series, and the first time they've lost back-to-back games in the postseason. Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy, whose giveaway behind his own net in Game 4 led to a tying goal for the Devils, usually bounces back after poor performances. There isn't a whole lot a goalie can do against an odd-man rush, however, and nothing he can do when the puck gets redirected in front of the net. "When you play a team like New Jersey you can't afford to give them that many outnumbered situations," said Alex Tanguay, who scored the lone goal for the Avalanche. "They're going to take advantage of those situations and that's what happened tonight."

Hey, I was at a fight and a hockey game broke out! There are twenty-odd free agents that haven't been signed, pre-season hasn't started yet and no one's severly injured who's name doesn't rhyme with "Avel Bure" - So, who's winning the Cup? posted by WeedyMcSmokey to Navel Gazing at 9:55 AM PST (20 comments total) Unfortunately - My Mac doesn't let me post links - SpoFi - Mac bad, PC good.
I'm going to do a little research - then try to pick the top 8 in each conference in the order that they will finish. Closest at the end of the season wins my grudging respect. Side bets are encouraged. Side bets that result in physical confrontation are better.
posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 10:01 AM PST on September 16 OK - Let's get Cuppy. First the Eastern conference.
East - Overview: The worst teams (Carolina and Pittsburgh) live here which makes this a little easier to guess than the West, but after you get beyond the top three teams, you have a whole buncha clubs with glaring problems that make the actual finish a little tough to call - I wouldn't be surprised if the difference between 10,11th place and 7th and 8th is a couple of road wins in January.
Who's better this year?

St. Louis Blues forward Shjon Podein doesn't know the meaning of the word rest. When he isn't going all out on the ice, he can be found giving plenty of free time to many worthy causes. This solid NHL citizen started The Shjon Podein Children's Foundation ( http://www.shjonpodein.com ) in 1997 in Rochester, Minnesota as a non-profit organization, whose purpose is to provide financial gifts to organizations that support children facing extraordinary difficulties. Besides being one of the League's "Good Guys," Podein has also proven to be a great party host during his charity endeavors. On June 30th, The Shjon Podein Children's Foundation will hold its fifth annual celebrity party and concert at the Rochester Civic Center Auditorium. The evening will include both silent and live auctions and a concert by Minneapolis recording artist gb leighton. Many other special guests are slated to appear. This event is sponsored by Schott Distributing, Laser 101.7, RBC Dain Rauscher and the St. Louis Blues.

18-Apr-02, 06:21 PM (EST) "Hockey predictions?" Ok, round one began last night - predictions? I say them "Dead Things" even with their recent slump and overtime loss, put it together in time to win a cup for the Dominator. As for the local team, I don't think the Avs have enough 'O' to get it done even with Peter Forsberg being a distraction for the opposing teams. Leaving home for game one in about an hour...
Go Avs!

Sportsrant Community National Hockey League NHL Rants View Full Version : Wings pick up option on Hasek just a quick correction, Hasek technically has not officially come out of retirement, but by allowing the wings to pick up the option for the 2003-2004 season, all signs indicate that he will in fact be back I've been glued to this for the last 14 hours or so too. Detroit, actually Ken Holland, has a huge problem on his hands. He has TWO $8 million goalies, and Legace. Philly picked up Hackett this morning from Boston, so Detroit may be dealing with Beantown. However, if they talk Cujo into dropping his NTC, they are still going to have to pay probably half of his salary for this year, making Hasek their $12 million goalie. If they move Cujo, someone could get him for $4million for this season.
Obviously Colorado needs a goalie, but Holland and LaCroix won't deal, so it would have to be a blockbuster 3 way trade.
As far as Hasek's reasoning behind coming back for a year, I'm questioning his legal situation in Czechoslovakia. Anonymous legal situation? i haven't heard anything about that...what's the deal (this is blakey)...but yeah, he's really throwing a wrench in detroit's budget.
