Orono, Maine The defending national champion Black Bears (2-0-0) skated to a 6-3 opening round victory over the University of New Brunswick (2-3-0) in a non-NCAA contest, while Canisius College (2-0-1) defeated the University of Connecticut (0-1-0) 1-0 in the tournament opener at Alfond Arena.
Barrett Heisten led the UMaine offensive onslaught scoring a goal and setting up two for the host team. Four Black Bears tallied four-point efforts in the victory, Cory Larose (1-1), Tom Reimann (1-1), Peter Metcalf (1-1) and Eric Turgeon (0-2). Dan Kerluke and A.J. Begg added the other two UMaine goals, while Ben Guite and Lucas Lawson also contributed assists.
New Brunswick's Colin Beardsmore (1-2) had a hand in all three Varsity Reds tallies, setting up two goals by linemate Peter MacKeller. Jay Doyle also added an assist in the contest.
In the tournament opener, goalie Sean Weaver recorded his first career shutout, backstopping the Ice Griffs 1-0 victory over the Huskies. Corey Lucas recorded the game's only goal when Joel Tarvudd won an offensive zone faceoff and Todd Bisson fed the puck from the point to Lucas, who then beat goaltender Marc Senerchia from close range.

MAINE SWEEPS MERRIMACK, 5-3
ORONO, MAINE-The University of Maine men's hockey team jumped out to quick start when defenseman Robert Ek tallied back-to-back goals at 6:43 and 17:00 of the first period, and it looked like a repeat of last night's dominating performance was imminent, as the Black Bears skated to the locker room with a 2-0 lead and momentum. Merrimack would have nothing of it however, scoring three-straight second period goals to set the stage for the third period. Trailing 3-2, UMaine attacked relentlessly, answering with three-straight goals to pull away from the Warriors 5-3.
The victory lifted the Black Bears into a tie with Boston College for third place in Hockey East with 27 points. UMaine improved to 12-7-3 in Hockey East and 21-7-4 overall after extending its winning streak to six games. Merrimack dropped to 11-17-5 overall and 6-12-5 in Hockey East play.
Ek scored both goals crashing the net from his point position. Barrett Heisten carried the puck from the lower faceoff circle to Merrimack goaltender Tom Welby's right, all the way around the net and up to the top of the other faceoff circle. When he broke towards the center, Ek broke from the point and was met with a cross-ice pass that he buried from the slot. Ek's second goal, Dan Kerluke and Brendan Walsh had worked the puck out of the corner to Welby's left, and Walsh hit Ek with a pass from the blue line that EK one-timed off Welby and into the net. The Black Bears looked to be off to the races as the period came to a close.

Sorry Cory Cross - you're cut Manville
Ryan Dixon
Managing Editor
Like so many recent university graduates, Cory Cross has got to be a little worried about his job prospects for the coming year. The lead footed Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman can't be too optimistic he will be playing in the National Hockey League for too long, once the new anti-obstruction rules are enforced. Hooking, holding and grabbing have become the default move of any lumbering defenceman who gets beat by a speedier player. League commissioner Gary Betman has long spewed rhetoric about opening up the game for the more skilled players, but to this point, the idea has developed as much as Jaromir Jagr's defensive game. Those players who make the grade will be allowed to play in the league. Those who fail the test will be given two options: go back to Saskatchewan and pray for rain or stay in the league on the condition that you replace your normal hockey stick with one of those novelty mini-sticks. That should make hooking players that deserve to be in the league a much less viable option. If the new rules are going to be enforced, it is going to mean a lot of penalties, which will also mean a lot of bitching from fans who take their cues from Don Cherry. The Cherry crowd would claim constant penalties take as much away from the game as the obstruction itself.
