Recipients to be honored at 40th annual NCAA Honors Dinner, Jan. 9
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-Harvard's Angela Ruggiero '02-04 (Harper Woods, Mich.) has been selected as one of the recipients of the NCAA Today's Top VIII Award, as was announced by the NCAA Honors Committee Tuesday. The Today's Top VIII Award winners are a group of distinguished student-athletes from the 2004 calendar year who will be recognized for their academic and athletics achievements, character and leadership at the 40th annual NCAA Honors Dinner Sunday, January 9, at the NCAA Convention in Grapevine, Texas. The nation's top-scoring defenseman in 2003-04, Ruggiero further established herself as the most dominant player at her position in women's hockey. The 2004 recipient of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, Ruggiero is just the second player in history to be named a four-time first-team All-America. She is the ECAC and Ivy League Player of the Year as well as a four-time League and conference first-team selection. Ruggiero is also a two-time USA Hockey Women's Player of the Year. Ruggiero capped her collegiate career in fourth place on Harvard's all-time scoring charts with 253 career points (96-157) after leading the team to a 109-13-5 record in 127 career games. She is the all-time leader in collegiate defensmen scoring and finished the season in third place on Harvard's scoring charts with 55 points (25-30). Ruggiero averaged 1.72 points per game while finishing ninth in the country in goals per game (0.78) and seventh in assists per game (0.94). She led the nation's defensemen in scoring for the fourth-straight season and was ninth overall in game-winning goals (5). Ruggiero turned in 16 multiple-point games, including five multiple-goal efforts. She also led the team, finishing +50 for the season while anchoring a Crimson defense that led the country, allowing a nation's-best 1.29 goals per game.

Register columnist
ANAHEIM - The North American ice hockey champions limped out of the Anaheim Ice dressing room after a recent defeat, beat up and bruised, their hands in fighter's fists and their tongues on the edge of saying words worse than H-E-double hockey sticks. They were nasty mad, but they didn't curse. Not with California Wave coach Rick Kelly and three assistants hovering around, ready to bench them at the first syllable of a squirt's swear. And certainly not with the moms and dads standing nearby, waiting to drive home these tough, supremely skilled 9- and
10-year-old boys from Orange County and surrounding areas. In a summer rampant with extreme games, ice hockey is theirs. It is the focus of youthful dedication and parental sacrifices that would rival those featuredin last month's Bravo cable series "Sports Kids Moms and Dads."
While other kids scamper to the beach, the skateparks, soccer fields and basketball courts, Wave players suit up in plastic armor and skate inside windowless ice centers, training 10 hours a week for elite squirt-division tournaments such as this week's North American Challenge Cup in Las Vegas. Always watching are their parents, who generously feed their sons' NHL
ambitions, shuttle them all over the Thomas Guide to $50-a-hour private lessons at far-flung rinks and Wave practices and games in Anaheim, spend $1,500 on top-of-the-line gear outgrown in a year, and take a five (figure) hole to the wallet.

Federal bill would require pharmacists to fill contraception prescriptions

    Russ
    at 9:11 PM ET
[JURIST] In response to recent refusals by some pharmacists objecting on moral grounds to filling prescriptions for emergency contraceptives or birth control pills, federal legislators unveiled a draft bill [PDF] on Thursday that would require pharmacies to fill all prescriptions, placing the impetus on the pharmacy and not on individual pharmacists. Sponsored by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), the bill is strongly supported by women's rights advocates including NARAL Pro-Choice America [advocacy website].
