Ray Bourque This, Ray Bourque That
Colorado's defensemen leads the charge in the quest for the Cup
by Owen Perkins Comment on this Story
MAY 31, 2001: If you're only reading the stories about Ray Bourque, you might be as sick of the coverage of him as he is. But if you're watching him play in the Stanley Cup Finals, watching him relish every moment of this charmed season, this just reward for an unparalleled career, you can't get enough of him. It's enough to make you wish for seven games. No one takes the ice with the assurance of Ray Bourque, recognizable through blurry eyes from the top of the arena and through bad television reception from across a crowded bar, his regal command of the rink is unmistakable. He handles the puck as well as anyone in the Finals, and to merely circle the zone while the play is stopped is to declare his turf from the Rockies to the Meadowlands.
Best of all, no one emanates the appreciation of each moment to the degree that Ray Bourque does. It's rubbing off, no question. His team has been inspired on his behalf since he left his long-time Boston Bruins late last season to pursue a more realistic shot at seeing his name inscribed on the Stanley Cup. Even his opponents seem to better appreciate the once-in-a-lifetime thrill of competing for the championship after pausing momentarily to see it all through Bourque's eyes. A day before the first game in the Finals, Bourque admitted that he had allowed himself the fantasy of envisioning his name on the Cup, imaging himself hoisting it up and carrying it around the rink. "Not for long though," he told reporters after an off-day practice. "I have got to stop myself because I know there is so much work to be done. But yes, I have [envisioned it], and it is a pretty neat feeling. I don't remember feeling like this for the previous two. Probably because I don't know if I am going to get the opportunity again. But I am certainly enjoying it and visualizing a lot of things."

Wednesday, 27 June, 2001, 10:53 GMT 11:53 UK Legend Bourque calls it a day
Bourque's Cup efforts have made him a hero in Denver
Colorado Avalanche defenseman Ray Bourque has announced his retirement less than a month after finally lifting the Stanley Cup. Bourque, who waited 22 years to win the National Hockey League's premier title, spent 20 years at the Boston Bruins before joining Colorado. He had been widely regarded as the best player never to have won the Stanley Cup before his moment came this year.
It's nice that I'm able to say I'm leaving the game with absolutely no regrets
Ray Bourque The Avalanche beat the New Jersey Devils 3-1 in the series decider in Denver. Bourque, in a career spanning four decades, was the highest scoring defenseman in NHL history with 410 goals and 1,579 points. "For me I know this is the end of the road," Bourque said on Tuesday. "I'm going to watch it. I'm going to pop in once in a while. I'm going to show up on the road. For sure, I'm going to miss it."

Another Bourque on the horizon
December 1, 2004 Yes, Ray Bourque is retired. So is his number, both here and in Boston. Yet the Bourque legacy lives on, with a son who is making his father very proud. I was curious if the movie "Still, We Believe" was released on DVD. If not, do you know if there are any plans to.
Paul E. Rosequist, Cranesville, PA A: Yes, quite some time ago. In addition, NESN has been airing the movie from time to time. Check out the programming schedule on NESN.com for more Hey TC - I miss watching the B's play. Should I expect to see you and your giant head broadcasting games anytime soon? P.S. I miss Cam Neely.
R, Boston A:
G, Warren RI A: Will the NHL lose a lot of fans because of this strike, and will the Bruins be affected by it?
Paul Sousa, Hudson A: Yes, absolutely. No sport comes out of a work stoppage unscathed. Major League Baseball needed the Mark McGwire/Sammy Sosa home run battle to reclaim its previous glory, and the 1994 NHL lockout set the sport back several years. It has been almost a month now and I am still craving more Sox. some friends and I had bought tickets home to Boston to try and catch a game 6 or 7 in the city, but it turned out even better when the Sox swept and we still got to come home and celebrate the parade. I could swear that I had seen the "unofficial" Red Sox soundtrack somewhere. Is it possible to buy this somewhere or download it? Everyone knows that music brings you back to a point in time easier than anything else. I can see myself popping this into the CD player 20 years from now and reminiscing about the best run in professional sports playoffs ever!

Making own mark matters to Bourque
June 26, 2004 ANDOVER Chris Bourque discovered long ago that being Ray Bourque's son is great, but it's pretty hard being Ray Bourque's Son. ADVERTISEMENT Ray Bourque's son attended his first Bruins practice at age 2 1/2. He learned hockey from NHL coaches and players, and he paired that knowledge with Hall of Fame hockey DNA. He often had the best seat in the house for Boston's greatest hockey moments of the past two decades. Ray Bourque's son feels the joy that comes with being hockey royalty. Ray Bourque's Son has to protect a legacy, live up to 22 seasons, 1,612 games, 410 goals, 1,169 assists, and one sweeter-than-syrup Stanley Cup. He's had to listen to trash talk since he played mites, had to hear, "You're no Ray Bourque" from kids he hung hat tricks on. Ray Bourque's Son feels the pressure that comes with being hockey royalty. As Chris Bourque prepares for his own pro career, starting with today's NHL Draft in Raleigh, N.C., he's trying to leave both identities in the past and forge his own. He's never shied away from either, and he's proud of both, but he's ready to carve his own legacy. Undoubtedly, that will be a challenge, especially since Chris will be spending at least next season at Boston University, playing in the city where his father turned from phenom to paragon. "I don't want to be known as Ray Bourque's Son," Chris said. "I want to be known as myself, Chris Bourque."

Looking Up
by Adam Wodon /Columnist What Chris Bourque didn't get was his size. As a result, the 5-foot-7 younger Bourque looks "up" to someone other than his father when it comes to hockey role models. "Marty St. Louis is my idol," said Bourque of the 5-foot-8 Vermont graduate and recently-named Hart Trophy winner as NHL most valuable player. "I try to play just like him. I see a little bit of myself in him. He's an unbelievable player and he's my hero." Bourque has more reasons to idolize St. Louis now. As Bourque sat at the NHL Draft here Saturday, he got a surprise phone call. It was St. Louis, wishing him luck. "[St. Louis] came to Boston this year, I talked to him and told him that he was Chris' favorite player," said Ray Bourque. "I asked for a stick and if he could sign one for Chris. And I know [Tampa Bay players] Dave Andreychuk and Tim Taylor and I told them also how Chris looks up to Marty St. Louis. I don't know how he got Chris' number today, but — they thought I gave it to him, but it didn't come from me. It was really a nice classy move on his part. Ray Bourque was a Hall of Fame NHL defenseman, then coached his son Chris at Cushing. Chris was drafted Saturday. (photo: Jim Connelly)
