Career Statistics Other Resources After three seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Bourque was a first-round draft choice of the NHL's Boston Bruins in 1979 and he became a starting defenseman immediately. Bourque set a record for points by a first-year defenseman and won the 1980 Calder Trophy as the league's rookie of the year and was named to the first All-Star team. The Bruins had given him the Number 7, which had been Phil Esposito's number. December 4, 1987, was Phil Esposito Night at Boston Garden and the team announced that the number would be retired after Bourque was finished wearing it. During the pre-game ceremony, Bourque skated over to Esposito and removed the Number 7 sweater to reveal another sweater bearing the Number 77. He gave Esposito the old sweater, to be hung in the Boston Garden rafters, and Bourque wore the 77 for the rest of his long career. The Bruins reached the playoffs 17 consecutive seasons during Bourque's tenure and they made the Stanley Cup finals twice without winning the championship. With the team out of the playoff picture late in the 1999-2000 season, he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche. Colorado lost in the conference finals that year, but in 2001 they won the Stanley Cup. The City of Boston staged a parade in which Bourque displayed the cup to his thousands of fans. He announced his retirement shortly afterward and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2004, his first year of eligibility.

Ray Bourque: The Captain The quintessential Ray Bourque moment? Perhaps it was on Phil Esposito night when he presented Esposito with his No. 7 jersey. Maybe it was leading Normand Leveille onto the Boston Garden ice at the old barn's "Last Hurrah." Beating the Canadiens in the playoffs in 1988 has to be up there, as do the countless fist pumps that came every time he scored a goal, nearly 400 of them. Over the course of a 22-year career in the National Hockey League, Raymond Bourque became one of the best defensemen the game has ever seen and one of the greatest Bruins of all time, retiring in 2001 as the club's all-time leader in games (1,518), assists (1,111) and points (1,506). His 395 goals are fourth on the Bruins' all-time list and are the most by any defenseman to ever wear the "B" on his sweater. Ray Bourque celebrating his First NHL goal. The Bruins drafted Bourque with their first pick, eighth overall, in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. An 18-year-old rookie, Bourque made the club out of training camp that fall and never even had as much as a cup of coffee in the minors. He proved immediately why, scoring his first NHL goal and adding his first NHL assist in his first game on Oct. 11 against Winnipeg. That was just the beginning of a season when Bourque finished an astounding plus-52 with 65 points, and became the first non-goaltender in the history of the National Hockey League to win the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie. Bourque also started what would become a tradition over the years, earning a First Team NHL All-Star berth, the first of 18 First or Second Team All-Star selections during his two decades with the Bruins.

Brian Bahr/Allsport DENVER (AP) Raymond Bourque, who helped fuel the Avalanche's failed bid for the Stanley Cup, signed a contract Wednesday that will keep him with Colorado for another year. The 39-year-old Bourque could have tried his luck on the free-agent market beginning July 1, but chose to stay with Colorado. The contract was for one year plus an option, but other details were not disclosed. "The Avalanche is a very competitive and contending club and I am looking forward to continue playing in a great hockey environment," Bourque said. "Ray is an impact player for our hockey club and every one of our players will be excited to know that he will be back with us," said general manager Pierre Lacroix. "Ray is in tremendous shape and is as strong as he has ever been."

To finally win a Stanley Cup, but the future Hall-of-Famer says that even without the prize it's been a great ride IN HIS 22 YEARS IN THE NHL, Raymond Bourque has just about seen it all. As a player, he has been on the ice during five U.S. presidential administrations. He has seen the rise and fall of disco music. He once played against the city of Denver's first NHL team, the Colorado Rockies, and now plays for its second, the Avalanche. In his rookie year, 1979, the best-selling new car in America was the Ford Fairmont.

(Redirected from Ray Bourque Ray Bourque of the Boston Bruins Raymond Jean Bourque (b. December 28 at Saint-Laurent , now part of Montreal Quebec Canada ) is a Hockey Hall of Famer who currently holds the records for most goals, assists and points by a defenseman in the National Hockey League (NHL) and has become near-synonymous with the Boston Bruins hockey team. Ray Bourque burst onto the NHL scene in after being drafted in the first round 8th overall by the Boston Bruins . Bourque immediately asserted himself as one of the best defensemen in the league, and won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year for the 1979-80 season and a First Team All-Star selection both, the first time in NHL history a non-goaltender had ever achieved such a distinction. Bourque was a solid force for Boston for twenty-one seasons (1979-2000), famous for combining offensive prowess at a level that few defensemen in league history had ever achieved he was a perennial shot accuracy champion at All-Star Games and near-unparalleled defensive excellence. The Bruins' reliance on his on-ice mastery was so total that while Bourque was very durable throughout much of his career the team was seen by many to flounder whenever he was out of the lineup.

BRUINS REPORT
Bourque Enters the Hall By Lawrence Goldstein Ray Bourque speaks at the Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony. (Getty Images) Raymond Jean Bourque is now an official member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. That's quite a journey from 1979, when the defenseman from the Verdun Black Hawks was chosen eighth overall by the Boston Bruins. It certainly didn't take Harry Sinden long to determine that Bourque was a very special talent. "It's easy to say I knew it now, 20 years after the fact, but if you want my candid answer, it was the very first time I saw him play", the current B’s President told the Boston Herald. Bourque burst onto the NHL scene in the fall of 1979 when he won Rookie of the Year, scored 65 points and registered a phenomenal plus-52 rating.
