AP Far be it from me to cast any aspersions on Brian Boucher's five consecutive shutouts. After all, eclipsing any mark that stood for 54 years is exciting and noteworthy. But in this era of the goaltender, these are the types of records that should fall. In today's game, it is less likely that Red Berenson's mark of six goals in a game or Darryl Sittler's 10-point single-game effort would ever be touched. Yet, his run of keeping the puck out of the net is really just the latest example of a developing trend over the past five years. Seven of the 10 longest shutout streaks in the Modern Era have occurred since 1998. In that context, 332 minutes without surrendering a single goal becomes more a part of a group than some unfathomable event for the ages. Still, Boucher's shutout streak is phenomenal on several levels, not the least of which is the matter of tending goal (in a beer league or bush league never mind the NHL) and not having at least one puck skip by you in some form or fashion. That notion defies comprehension in its own right. However, what Boucher did for his team, his city and for his career is more timely than, say, any of his many highlight-reel saves over the last two weeks.
