For the first time in history, Slovakia won the World Ice Hockey Championships, demolishing ice hockey super powers Canada and Sweden in the quarter and semi-finals before finishing off the Russians in the final. In both the quarterfinal against Canada and the semi-final against Sweden, Slovakia managed to turn the match around from being 2:0 down. In the final, the Slovaks were winning against the Russians 3:1 until the last period. To everyone’s horror, the Russians fought back and drew even. Peter Bondra scored 2 of the goals for Slovakia. Heck, it's gotten to the point the league is trying some radical rule changes to add desperately needed scoring to the game. Chris Pronger of the St. Louis Blues almost won the Norris Trophy (best defenseman) for actually helping his team prevent goals. What a concept - a defenseman being honored strictly for defending, and not joining the attack. That hasn't happened in some 14 years, since Rod Langway did it in back-to-back seasons with the Washington Capitals. But what about goals? What about goal scorers? More specifically, what about Peter Bondra? You know the name, but you wouldn't recognize the face if he showed up on your doorstep selling raffle tickets for a game-worn Yvon Labre (ex-Capital captain back in their expansion years) sweater. Admit it, you wouldn't know Peter Bondra from the next guy on the street. Already the most offensively gifted team in the East, Ottawa has added the Washington Capitals’ all-time leading scorer, Peter Bondra. It’s a one-sided deal that costs the Senators nothing more than a minor-league player and a draft pick. Bondra has 825 points in 961 career games, all with Washington. He’s a textbook goal scorer, with tremendous speed, a deadly wrist shot and unerring instincts. He also has a reputation as a smart veteran who will backcheck and kill penalties. At 36 years old, some say his skills are fading. But this year’s numbers – 21 goals and 14 assists for the dismal Capitals – suggest Bondra still has much to offer. He has been injury-prone throughout his career, but has missed only five games this season. The trade has a coals-to-Newcastle look about it – adding a sniper to the NHL’s highest-scoring team, and a power play specialist to the league’s number-one ranked power play. But the Senators, like most Stanley Cup contenders, have injury trouble. Center Todd White will miss four-to-six weeks after breaking a foot in last night’s 1-1 tie with the Capitals. Center Radek Bonk suffered a similar injury last week: broken foot, four-to-six weeks. Center Mike Fisher and wingers Antoine Vermette and Vaclav Varada are also laid up, and might not play again this season.
