CHESS Lubomir Kavalek
By Lubomir Kavalek Monday, December 27, 2004; Page C10 Here are some events making the chess headlines as the year draws to a close: Bobby Fischer's Icelandic saga continues. In 1972 he won the world title in Reykjavik. This month the Icelandic government offered him a permanent residency, to rescue him from a jail in Japan. Despite a warning from the United States not to do so, Iceland stands by its offer. The endgame could be decided next month. Add Chess to your personal home page

Garry Kasparov won the Russian championship last month and continues to write about "his great predecessors." His second volume was nominated for the 2004 British Chess Federation Book of the Year award, but first place was snatched by Jeremy Silman and Pal Benko for their impressive biography "Pal Benko: My Life, Games and Composition." The United States could have produced two 16-year-old U.S. champions at the 2005 U.S. Chessmaster championship this month in San Diego. Hikaru Nakamura, of White Plains, N.Y., did become the overall champion, but Tatev Abrahamyan of Glendale, Calif., lost her chance in a playoff and the women's title went to Rusudan Goletiani, a 24-year-old former Georgian junior star.

The Russian Chess Observer "64" (the editor-in-chief - Alexander Roshal) defined the owner of "Oscar" - the international award which is handed over to the best chess player of the last year for the 10th time. 445 chess experts from 75 countries of the world have taken part in the anniversary voting (including 74 grandmasters). They have named the top ten strongest, in their opinion, chess players of 2004. The 1st place in the list was estimated by 13 points, 2nd - 11, 3rd - 9, 4th - 7, 5th – 6, …, 10th - 1 point.
The Indian GM Viswanathan Anand, who achieved 5205 points is the owner of the bronze statuette of "The Fascinated Wanderer". He is the only one mentioned in all the lists, and in 279 lists he is on the first place! And no wonder: " The Tiger from Madras " has a unique collection of the first places at various tournaments in classical and rapid chess. Vishy was certainly a leader of the Indian team at the Olympiad in Spain. In general, his present victory, as well as the previous ones, is undisputed.
This is the second “double” for Anand – he successively became the owner of Oscar in 1997 and 1998. In the newest history of this award only Garry Kasparov achieved the same results (1995-96 and 2001-02). Kasparov and Anand together have received 9 of 10 Oscars from “64”. One more was received by Vladimir Kramnik in the year 2000.

Leon, Spain
Home Teams Round: End Irish games in PGN here , up to round 9. See comments by Mark Quinn and Steven Brady exclusively for TICA below and in and Nine round Swiss, 6-17 November. There are 35 teams in the men's section and 32 in the women's. Ireland's teams are: men: Mark Quinn, Mark Heidenfeld, Stephen Brady and Mel O'Cinneide; women: Mark Quinn writes: The playing venue and conditions are perhaps the best that I have ever encountered, being situated in a vast sports hall whose lights are dimmed at the start of play as overhead lights illuminate each board individually. The people running the tournament are particularly professional and extremely courteous. Apart from a few gliches at the beginning of the tournament barely worth a mention (and to be expected when running an event of this size) everything has run smoothly and the conditions are optimum for generating tense hard fought encounters. It's worth mentioning that at either end of the playing hall there are two massive screens one of which relays live pictures of different players in the tournament which plenty of close ups of the clocks, boards and facial manouveres. The other giant screens relay instantly crucial games, usually the board one pairings from both sections and the Spanish team. Leon is a really beautiful place for an event such as this. It's a charming old medieval city with a famous Gothic cathedral (right) dating from the 12th to 14th century, winding streets reminiscent of Italy and a very relaxed pace of life, for Spain at any rate. The city itself dates from Roman times and has retained its medieval appearance. We're still investigating the night life which is pretty active as Leon is also a thriving university town giving the place a real buzz in the wee hours of the night.

Anand wins World Chess Championship (in my personal opinion)
In one of the most amazing chess games ever played, Anand Viswanathan has defeated Alexei Shirov to win the World Chess Championship by a score of 3 1/2 to 1/2. Although Anand only needed two draws to secure the victory, instead of playing 4. Bg5 against the French, which often leads to a draw, Anand chose to play one of the sharpest attacking lines. Grandmaster Anand Viswanathan in 1989 at the Asian Team Chess Championship in Genting Highlands, Malaysia

Shirov, in his typical attacking style, sacrificed a knight for two pawns, but, when he had finally got four pawns for the knight, he decided it was high time to sacrifice a bishop as well. The result was that Shirov got four passed pawns for a bishop and knight. His pawns were bearing down on Anand's exposed king. I do not think anybody can figure out what was going on. I certainly cannot. Now, the question is: Who is the World Chess Champion? At least five people can claim or are claiming the title, Anand, Kramnik, Karpov, Fischer, possibly Kasparov, and even Stan Vaughan, a Las Vegas gadfly. Plus, don't forget Xie Jun, the Woman's World Champion, who was invited to play but then not allowed to play, because she is a woman. I consider Anand to be the real World Chess Champion. I do not know from what mental or physical illness Kasparov was suffering when he played that what-ever-you-call it against Kramnik in London last month, but one cannot simply resign the world chess championship and appoint a successor, which is what in effect Kasparov did.
