The 31-year-old superstar annexed his third Corus title tallying 8.5 points from 13 rounds, pipping the likes of Braingames champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and world champion Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine. After his closest rival, world's strongest woman chess player, Judit Polgar played a quick draw with talented youngster Teimour Radjabov of Azerbeijan, Anand settled for a quick 14-move draw with Evegeny Bareev of Russia in the 13th and final round. Polgar, who held Anand to a draw in the penultimate round, finished second with eight points. The swift game, in which Anand played white, began with  the French defence and went into the Burn Variation. The Indian champion played it safe and soon offered the draw, which was accepted by the Russian after a brief thought. Radjabov finished with 6.5 points in the lower half of the standings.

Alexei Shirov's letter to The Week in Chess
Shirov Letter on Dubai Grand Prix Shirov E-Mail dated Sunday 14th April 2002 Dear Mark,
Alexei Shirov
I am glad that you asked me to tell you the story. I would like it to be published both in your website and in your magazine. In February this year I confirmed my participation in Dubai under the condition that the prize fund would be no lower than what was announced on the FIDE website on 7th of February (480 thousand USD minus 10% of the FIDE tax). I did not sign any contract with FIDE and neither I was sure that I would take part in more FIDE Grand Prix events. However my confirmation was accepted by FIDE and on 2nd of April at the late evening I arrived in Dubai. The tournament was to start on 3rd at 2PM although some matches including mine would start at 6PM. As I arrived late, I even missed the players' meeting but at the same evening Zurab Azmaiparashvili (who is funnily both an elite player and a FIDE man) told me that Bareev would probably withdraw because the prize fund was reduced to 120 thousand. I immediately said that I would do the same. On the next morning I made a written protest, then Khalifman presented his one and Leko verbally joined us while his manager wrote his protest to FIDE. In fact Leko was the only one of us who had a real contract that actually stated even a bigger prize fund - 500.000$.

"Shirov! (Best Games)"

You'd think that chess and video would make a terrific natural partnership. What could be better than enjoying a lecture by a great player in the privacy of your own home? While it's true that asking questions is an impossibility in this environment, you have the option of watching it at your own pace, using the "pause" and "rewind" buttons to review difficult areas of the analysis.
So I was pretty wary when I opened the box containing the five-tape series called Shirov! (Best Games) . I sat down with a remote in one hand, a cold drink in the other, and a bottle of No-Doze close at hand in case I needed to fight off sleep. After ten minutes of the first tape I realized that I was going to have to throw my past experiences and preconceptions straight out the nearest window.

Editorial (Aug 27)
Since then Charlottetown was able to host an Atlantic Invitational (ie Atlantic Closed). Tom was in the area for a chess camp and his participation allowed us to attract a few other players to come out. An early draw with Aaron Cooper came back to haunt him as the two finished with identical scores of 4.5/5. The x-table is available for viewing at the CFC web site. I will post all of the games someday (in the fall). Two weeks later Charlottetown hosted an "informal" match pitting the local boys against a crew from NB. The foursome from the SJ area took it on the chin going down 11.5-4.5 Of course our team was led by the return of Anthony Howarth who had a perfect score. Full results are available on the CFC web site, and again I plan to post the games on the web page some day in the fall. Justin's been in town for August, which means everyone's kept hopping between a CFC double RR (Anthony's leading with one round to go), Risk games, Dooley's for pool, kibitzing sessions, etc. He heads back to Waterloo over the weekend. As I speak the Canadian Closed Championship, Round 8 is just underway. Unfortunately no PEI reps this time, but we're all interested in the performances of Maritimers: Ronak K, Tyler R, and Eddie U. Former Maritimer, and an old buddy of mine, Robert Hamilton was in the hunt for an IM title, but had the two tough guys left ot face. Lesiege and Spraggett hold down the lead with 6/7 (2 draws each).

Alexei Shirov gives his views on the proposed match between Kasparov and Kramnik
Interview by Hartmut Metz, May 2000, translation by Harald Fietz ( Figo more English chess articles by Hartmut Metz Alexei Shirov Alexei, in 1998 you beat Kramnik in Cazorla with a score of 5.5:3.5 in what was called the challengers' final, held after Anand refused to participate. Can you comment on the proposed world championship between Kasparov and Kramnik?
They have no right to call it a world championship. Of course, nobody can prevent them from playing a private match, as Kasparov did against Timman in Prague in 1998. Obviously you are not on good terms with the world's top 3. What's your view of Kasparov's behaviour?
How would you assess Anand's role?

He acted according to a rather cynical approach which from another angle may be called a practical principle: money talks. So far he has received 200,000 dollars without doing anything. I don't know what could possibly justify this sum. And what is Kramnik's part in the process?

The professionals will risk everything to qualify as the next challenger of the Chess960 World Champion. On Thursday 5th and Friday 6th the two-day Chess 960 FiNet Open will be played and on Saturday and Sunday (7th and 8th August) the famous Ordix Open will take place. The price fund in the most famous Rapid Chess Open of the world, in which over 100 titleholders will take part, has been increased. All together 35.000 Euros can be won in the two open tournaments. The distribution of single prizes for both tournaments is based on the relative number of participants of the two tournaments. The relation of the prizes for both tournaments is calculated on the number of participants following the formula: participants Chess960 Open/expected number of participants Ordix Open. It is important to register early to secure a place in the strong and popular Open tournaments. S imuls of Shirov (40 boards) and Svidler (Chess960 on 20 boards) as well as two exhibition fights of Anand and Aronian will open the five-day chess festival on August 4th. It has become a tradition, that already the Chess Classic opening day is a spectacular happening, but organizer Hans-Walter Schmitt is not willing to reveal this well kept secret.

GM Vassily Ivanchuk (2739)
Vassily Ivanchuk is currently ranked 6th in the world and is the highest rated player from the Ukraine. He led the Ukraine team to victory at the Chess Olympics in Calvia, Spain, last year. In 2004, Ivanchuk also won the European Championship. At one point Ivanchuk was the world's number three player. Ivanchuk was a finalist in the final match of the 2002 FIDE Knock Out World Chess Championship. His major tournament wins include the 1996 Corus Chess Tournament and Linares in 1989, 1991 and 1995. Ivanchuk is known for his innovative moves which are often referred to as "chuckies" by the chess world.
GM Alexei Shirov (2737)
Alexei Shirov of Spain was runner up in the 2000 FIDE Knock Out World Championship. Shirov recently finished tied for first in the Smartfish Masters tournament in Drammen, Norway. In 1998, Shirov defeated Vladimir Kramnik in a match in which the winner was given the right to play Gary Kasparov for the World Chess Championship. Unfortunately, the match never took place, for lack of sponsorship. Alexei Shirov plays a gambling, risky attacking style that makes for very exciting chess and was a student of Tal, a well known attacking world champion. Shirov is co-author of the book "Fire On Board" which is a collection of some of his best games. Shirov will be bringing copies of his new book "Fire On Board 2" to Edmonton and has already started working on a third book. Shirov is also featured in a series of chess videos.
