Chess Shirov sues the World Chess Council 11 October 2000 Alexei Shirov is taking the World Chess Council (WCC) to court! The Spanish Grandmaster was left without money or a world championship match after he had defeated Vladimir Kramnik over two years ago in a match to decide the challenger to Garry Kasparov. Kramnik got duly paid for the match, but Shirov was promised his prize money in the supposedly following world championship match. Shirov never signed any type of contract for the match, however.
As most of us know, this match never happened, and Shirov has continuously kept the issue in the public eye, demanding his money and a shot at the title.
Shirov is demanding the sum of $1,300,000. The original agreement between Shirov, Kasparov and match organizer Luis Rentero was that Shirov get $1,300,000 for winning against Kasparov and $600,000 for losing. Both Rentero and Kasparov say that the cancellation of the Kasparov-Shirov match was not their responsibility.

Kasparov Claims Sarajevo Crown
Garry Kasparov won the Sarajevo supertournament by defeating giant-killer Movsesian in spectacular fashion in the final round Monday. Movsesian tried the popular 6. Be3 line against Kasparov's Sicilian. The world number one quickly sacrificed the exchange on c3, and it was a race to see whose attack would arrive first as they castled on opposite wings. Kasparov was quicker, and Movsesian was left with his queen on the other side of the board while his king's protection was stripped away. Movsesian resigned after 32 moves, giving Kasparov the championship with 8.5 points, half-a-point better than Adams and Shirov.
Shirov continued with the unusual and exciting opening variations played at Sarajevo by crushing Bacrot with his surprise Budapest Defense . The Frenchman castled long and aimed his artillery at Shirov's kingside, but the defense was adequate. When it was Shirov's turn, he unleashed a fantastic attack which left Bacrot's king walking across the board to his doom. But despite the impressive victory, Shirov finished a disappointing second, after leading the tournament until his loss to Movsesian.

This was Anand's third title in this unique tournament that has one blindfold and one rapid game in each round. Anand finished the tournament with a tally of 14.5 points, a full point ahead of nearest rivals Peter Leko of Hungary and 2002 Champion Alexander Morozevich of Russia. Though Anand did not finish first in the individual rapid and blindfold categories, his steady performance in both was enough to net him the Champion's crown. Braingames Champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia won the blindfold title after he drew his last round game with Ljubomir Ljubojevic of Yugoslavia. Kramnik had a full point lead in this section and he achieved the just result in the last round. Anand tied for second along with Morozevich in Blindfold with a fluent victory over Topalov.

But the Indian ace did win the rapid competition with 7.5 points, while Evegeny Bareev was half a point behind. Anand was fifth in blindfold and third overall.
In the final set of matches, the NIIT Brand Ambassador Anand set the ball rolling with a win over Boris Gelfand in the blindfold game and with Kramnik drawing Veselin Topalov and Morozevich drawing with Peter Svidler, the gap between the leaders and Anand came down to just half a point.
