Players and Other Personalities category. This is where we link to Web resources specializing in biographical sketches of chess players and of other chess personalities. By other chess personalities we mean writers, organizers, problemists, and gadflies who made their mark on the chess world in ways other than outstanding chess play. There is far less material on these luminaries than on the players themselves. For some reason, we had player links scattered across several of our own pages. After consolidating them into the 'Players and Personalities' page, we decided to distinguish between sites that cover many players and sites that are dedicated to a single player, which are mostly fan sites. We realized that there are many sites that specialize in sketches of all the World Champions, so we created a new category called

Alexei Shirov's gambling style fails him in the long run
by Sam Sloan
Prior to the "World Chess Championship" in Las Vegas, Alexei Shirov, originally from Latvia and recently of Spain, had a run of bad luck. Shirov defeated Vladimir Kramnik in a match in which the winner was supposed to have a right to play Garry Kasparov for the World Chess Championship. Only the loser of the match, Kramnik, got money. Then, the match with Kasparov never took place, for lack of sponsorship. Then, Shirov's wife left him.
Gambler's Ruin - Alexei Shirov attacked and attacked until he ran out of luck. Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu of Romania, who was virtually unknown prior to the tournament but who ended the quest by Shirov for the World Chess Championship and reached the semi-finals.
Then, Shirov adopted a new country: Poland. Why would Shirov leave sunny Spain for Poland? Shirov had the best reason a man could have: A woman! Then, the United States Consular authorities, in their infinite wisdom, refused to give Shirov's new girlfriend, Marta Zielinska, 21, a visa to enter the United States to accompany him to the World Chess Championship in Las Vegas, even though Marta is a woman's International Master and is rated 2356 by FIDE. (A possible reason why she was denied a visa is that she is carrying Shirov's child. US immigration authorities do not like to give visas to pregnant women, for fear of manufacturing US citizens. However, the US Embassy had really almost nothing to worry about, because only one of the players at the World Chess Championship in Las Vegas eventually defected.)

'Dream Team' at The Guardian Nigel Short has joined The Guardian newspaper as 'our new chess columnist'. Good news for those of us who have enjoyed his wide-ranging and punchy columns in his former newspaper. Click here for an interview (by Stephen Moss) and here for Stephen Moss's new 'rookie' column in which he tells us about his chess lessons with the former world championship challenger. Hopefully Short's columns will be available online from the same source.
The Guardian
's announcement of 'our new chess columnist' had me a bit worried for the present incumbent, as you will see further down in my letter to the Guardian editor. I'm pretty sure Leonard Barden is still going to be doing his Saturday columns, though it pays to be safe rather than sorry. "

Najdorf: Life and Games
Review by Steve Giddins
Offbeat Nimzo-Indian
About half this book is taken up with 4 f3 after 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e6 3 Nc3 Bb4, with chapters on 4 a3, 4 Bg5, 4 g3, 4 Qb3, plus a short chapter on other odds and ends. In fact, it covers everything other than 4 Qc2, 4 Nf3 and 4 e3. Chris Ward is the ideal author for this book: not only is he a lifelong Nimzo player with Black, he has also dabbled with all the systems covered with White. As he says, it is probably a little harsh to call them offbeat: they are all highly respectable ways of countering the Nimzo-Indian. JS
Fire on Board, Part 2 (1997-2004)
The best-selling first volume of Fire on Board was an outstanding collection of games imbued with imaginative ideas written by a young master confident of his abilities and the future. The second volume is just as good and there is no reason why it should not emulate the success of the first volume. The changes in the chess world since then are reflected in the writing. Shirov, like all grandmasters, now uses strong computer software to check his annotations, but one senses that he does not like doing so, as he often tries to show that a computer does not possess his own human creativity. Shirov also comes across as disillusioned by the current state of the chess world. But the 53 games are the heart of the book. Besides being a fine player, Shirov is a perceptive annotator with remarkable insight into the amazing chess positions he so often reaches.
