For me, this personality, notwithstanding his fundamentally optimistic attitude, had a tragic note. The enormous mental resilience, without which no chess player can exist, was so much taken up by chess that he could never free his mind of this game, even when he was occupied by philosophical and humanitarian questions. Edward Perepletsky drew his last round game with NM Tony D'Aliosio to win the Summer Tuesday Night Marathon this evening with a score of 7 from 8. The 20-year-old Cal Tech student, home on break, started the event ranked around number 20 in the 86-player field but turned in a USCF performance rating of close to 2600 for his last five games, scoring 4 1/2 points against an IM, a FM, and 3 NMs. Tying for second at 6.5 were NMs Batchimeg Tuvshintugs and Victor Ossipov. The next Marathon, the David Gee Memorial, starts August 23. MI women occupy three of the top 20 positions on the USCF's top 100 list for females. WGM Camille Baginskaite is number 7 at 2342 followed by Batchimeg Tuvshintugs at number nine (2275) and Egle Morkunaite number 15 at 2188. The Bay Area can even count one more player as Stanford student Cindy Tsai is number 18 at 2169.

International Master Ricardo DeGuzman continued his winning ways in Bay Area tournaments by defeating NM Michael Aigner in the last round of the People's Open held February 14-16 in Berkeley. DeGuzman, who scored 5-1 to take home the $500 first prize, was only nicked for draws by FMs Adrian Keatinge-Clay and Bela Evans. NM Paul Gallegos had an excellent result, finishing second at 4 1/2, losing only to DeGuzman. There was a big tie for third at 4 with Evans, Keatinge-Clay and Aigner joined by IM Walter Shipman, SM Dmitry Zilberstein and NM Matthew Ho. Larry Snyder won the Expert section in fine style scoring 5-1. This result will put Larry comfortably over 2100 as he continues his quest to reach 2200, a goal he briefly reached in 1997. Good luck Larry! Don Shennum directed the 155 player multi-section event.

Woman's Chess Grandmaster is Ildikó Mádl, is to the left of Zsuzsa. Ildiko Madl played fourth board for the Hungarian Woman's Chess Team and delivered the decisive point which won the world championship by defeating her Soviet opponent, after Sofia Polgár got benched for losing to an unknown and unrated Chinese girl named Peng ZhaoQin. I do not know who the man at the far left is. If anybody knows, please e-mail me. I took this photo during the 1988 World Chess Olympiad in Thessaloniki, Greece. Zsuzsa's father, Laszlo Polgar, had sent Zsuzsa to negotiate some kind of business deal with Kasparov. Zsuzsa speaks Russian fluently and thus was a suitable person to negotiate with Kasparov. Zsuzsa is now the Woman's World Chess Champion.

Polgar Sisters Defeat Soviets in World Chess Olympiad
by Ismail Sloan SALONIKA, GREECE - 17 November 1988 - Soviet hegemony in woman's chess was dealt a crushing blow when a team consisting primarily of the Polgar sisters of Hungary defeated the Soviet Union by a score of 2 - 1. The defeat would have been worse except for the fact that on board two 12-year-old Judit Polgár was unable to prove a win, in spite of being a full exchange up against former world champion challenger Levitina. Judy missed a rook sacrifice which would have ended the game and then, in a difficult position in spite of her material advantage, was unable to prevent Levitina from placing her remaining knight in such a domineering position as to guarantee a draw. On board one, woman's world champion Maya Chiburdanidze played the tame bishop's opening against Suzie Polgar, hoping for a slow build-up. Maya seemed to have a slight advantage in the early middle game. However, later on, Susan was starting to get the edge, so Maya forced a trade of queens and headed for a draw. The Soviets entered the match with an apparent advantage. They were paired with two whites against one black plus their average team rating was 55 points more than that of the Polgar sisters. They were also vastly more experienced. The ages of the three Polgar sisters are 19, 14 and 12, whereas the youngest Soviet is Maya, aged 28. Nevertheless, most observers who had seen the previous rounds gave the Polgars at least an even chance of drawing or winning the match. It was also pointed out that two years earlier all of the Russians had received a gift of 100 free rating points, which Susan Polgar did not get, so the 55 points rating advantage of the Soviets was illusory.
