Knight$ Gameknot Team Profile Hosted by University of St Andrews Judit Polgar was born in Hungary in 1976 and is the youngest of 3 sisters. All were schooled at home and taught chess at an early age. Whilst her older sisters, Suzusa and Sofia, have many notable tournament successes (Suzusa is a former female world champion), Judit has proved to be the most successful by far. Judit became a grandmaster at the age of 15 (a record at the time) and since then has risen into the ranks of the top 20 chess players in the world (the other 19 are all men!). She has won many tournaments, including the US Open in 1998 and the Najdorf 2000 Super Tournament, reached the quarter-finals of the 1999 FIDE World Chess Championship and consistently scores highly for the Hungarian mens' team in the Olympiad. In a chess world dominated by men, Judit has been a breath of fresh air. We expect even more success for her in the coming years.

GM Judit Polgar to visit Botswana!!
While it may be questioned that China's GM Xie Jun is the Queen to the throne of women's chess, GM Judit Polgar has proven to be the strongest woman's player of all time. Since her early teens, GM Polgar has consistently terrorized the male dominion of chess by placing in the world's strongest tournaments. With an 2679 FIDE rating, Judit is among the world's top 25 players and the youngest of the famous chess playing sisters ( GM Zsuzsu and IM Sophia ). The legend of Judit's teddy bear is famous, but now the little girl has grown up and has earned the respect of all in the international chess body.
From August 1-9, she will visit the southern African nation of Botswana to give a number of chess exhibitions and tour the country. Patrick Wanda , Botswana Chess Federation's Secretary General, has planned a knock-out tournament for the privilege to play the Hungarian Grandmaster. The 30-board simuls are only for Botswana players and the BCF plans to make first-rate arrangements and hopes to receive support from the private sector. Mr. Wanda states, "This opportunity is also to be used to raise funds for the development of chess in Botswana. . . particularly, the African team championships which take place later this year."

Susan Polgar's Deam Comeback
The US women's team made history at the Chess Olympiad by capturing Silver, the first ever Olympic medal for the United States. The player and driving force behind this success was Susan Polgar, who came out of a eight-year hiatus with a stunning performance. Read the interview. Permalink

Judit, is the real Polgar. I use to like and respect Susan, then I heard her manipulating an interviewer into asking her how Bobby Fischer made out when her family had him as a guest for a while. This was many years ago. She would have been in her early teens (I think). Then she claimed to have beaten him. (She claimed he became furious or something to the effect). She didn't come right out and make the boast, but she painted the picture so that we could connect the dots. She is a tremendous player for sure...almost as tremendous as she THINKS she is. But her sister is an angel and truth exudes from her. No, Judit is no. 1 in my book~! Posted by: Mikel Nix Susan Polgar is one of the most remarkable chess players in the history of chess. She is also one of the nicest and most professional person as well. I salute her as a human being and a legendary chess player.

VISWANATHAN ANAND'S versatile skills in chess and experience were required in full measure to win the Chess Classic rapid match, making a glorious hat-trick at Mainz in Germany on August 17. In doing so, the Indian kept his hold over this rapid tournament for yet another year.
This year the Chess Classic held from August 13-17 featured "The King meets the Queen" theme where defending champion Anand was pitted against Hungary's Judit Polgar, the No. 1 ranked woman player in the world. Although in head-to-head meetings Anand had a huge plus score of more than a dozen extra victories, the course of the match did not follow the expected lines. It turned out to be a pitched battle for supremacy and this was the only all-decisive rapid match ever. The best-of-eight duels had two clear phases. The tactical dare-devilry in the first three days involving six games and one calm positional day which resulted in the match swinging in favour of Anand. The event saw three-fourths of see-sawing excitement and finally it was an expected result on the D-day after Anand chose a serious change of strategy for the last two games.

CHESS/REST OF THE WORLD V RUSSIA
    Super Ks conquered
ARVIND AARON RUSSIA is not as strong as the Soviet Union once was in the world of chess. This was proved through a Russia versus Rest of the World match which was surprisingly won by the latter by a 52-48 margin at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow on September 11. Russia is a modern day powerhouse in chess and despite starting as favourite, it failed due to various reasons. Chief of which was the failure of the four super Ks - Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik and Khalifman. Altogether they pooled 16.5 points from 37 games, accounting for a minus four score. Had they scored 50 per cent the match score would have been tied and if they had scored plus one, the Russians would have actually won the contest. The Rest of the World team had failed in two previous such matches both to the Soviet Union in 1970 at Belgrade and 1984 at London by close margins of 19.5-20.5 and 19-21. On the third attempt, it won clinching four rounds and losing two for an aggregate 52-48 score. In this match the format was 10-player a side like last time with two reserves. It was not a four-round classical match but a 10-round Scheveningen on rapid chess. This format allowed each player in the Rest of the World team to face each Russian once in a 25-minutes plus 10-second increment a move game.

    Female players are merely pawns.
By Patrick Taylor Smith In Mainz, Germany, two young chess prodigies played last August under the glare of a media frenzy. They played an attack-oriented style of chess involving exciting tactics and vicious attacks. But that is not why the regular media took interest. Nor is the fact that these teenage prodigies represent role models for the next generation of young chess players the reason for the unusually high level of media coverage. Rather, the extraordinary characteristic of these players is completely unrelated to the game. Elisabeth Paehtz and Alexandra Kosteniuk are female chess players, but more importantly, they are attractive female chess players. LOLITA CHESS THE POLGAR EXPLOSION It was not always thus. Women players were not always sex objects, tools to sell tickets. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean women were treated better: chess history is full of discrimination against women. Chess champions from Bobby Fischer to Garry Kasparov (not Max Euwe, who was the first world champion to lose to a woman) have expressed contempt for women's ability to use the higher order thinking required of high level chess play. In fact, this belief has been so widespread in the chess world that even women players accept it. Sasha Kosteniuk, in an interview, said, “men are more industrious and less emotional than women” and that, consequently, women would never achieve parity with men in chess.
