by Nancy Ruhling Grandmaster Susan Polgar settles herself into the folding chair on the makeshift podium, folds her arms demurely in front of her and trains her enormous coffee-brown eyes on the green and white chessboard before her. She lost the coin toss to her opponent, Hall of Famer Lev Alburt, so he, as white, will be making the first move in the 4th annual Chess-in-the-Parks Rapid Open in New York City's Central Park. Polgar, the No. 1 ranked player in the United States Bobby Fischer , Boris Spassky, Garry Kasparov As Polgar and Alburt make their moves, the results are bellowed out via microphone and 32 hyper grade-schoolers, posing as chessmen, mimic the players' maneuvers on a life-size chessboard beneath the park's angel-topped Bethesda Fountain. The object of this demonstration is not so much to win or lose but to show children how much fun the game of chess really can be. An hour later, amid all the noise, nuisance and nonsense, the game ends: It's a tie. As the live chessmen boogie off the board, Polgar stands tall in her black stilettos and puts her hand on her forehead as if the motion alone will clear her mind and get her to concentrate on her next move, which is right into the crowd to greet all her fans.

The Duel: The King meets the Queen
Game 8 Anand completes a hat-trick, wins 5-3
Peaking at the right time, Vishy Anand won the eighth and final game against Judit Polgar, taking the Chess Classic Mainz 2003 title with a 5-3 score. It was a very closely contest event, though the final tally on board looks a little unflattering for the ever fighting Judit. Surely, it was Vishy's day as began with a win on the seventh game, and improved as the day wore, taking the next game and the title in his bag. This gives the 'Tiger from Madras' his third straight title, starting with Kramnik in 2001, following with Ponomariov in 2002 and concluding with Judit. Switching to the Ruy Lopez, Vishy held on to an even position right though and exerted pressure on Judit. Finding herself in a complex position, Judit tried out a knight sacrifice on the kingside, but Anand cooly refuted and went on to capture a few pawns on the queenside. Ensuring his title, midway through, Vishy collected the full point as Judit wasnt prepared for anything less. 'I was nervous and played badly,' confessed Judit in the post match press briefing.

Judit Polgár
Judit Polgár (born July 23 ) is a Hungarian chess player . Easily the best female chess player in history, in the October FIDE rating list (including men and women) she was ranked number nine in the world with an Elo rating of 2728. She is the only woman on FIDE's Top 100 list http://www.fide.com/ratings/top.phtml Judit and her two older sisters ( Zsuzsa (GM) and Zsófia (IM)) were reportedly part of an educational experiment carried out by their father Laszlo Polgar , in an effort to prove that women could achieve high mental aptitude when trained from a very early age. He set out to educate his daughters in many fields, not merely chess, but all three latched on to the game at a young age, and have achieved heights in chess few men ever achieve. Judit could almost certainly have won the title of Women's World Champion of Chess several times over. No other woman was even in the top 100 of the FIDE Elo rating list, while Judit entered the Top 10 in 2003. However, she has refused to participate in women-only chess events, stating that she wants to be the true World Champion of Chess . Amongst her achievements are earning the men's Grandmaster title at the then-record age of 15 years and 4 months, one month earlier than

It's easy to forget that there is no such thing as the Men's World Champion , because there is no rule restricting the title to men only. It's also easy to forget that the Women's World Champion is a title which has been as hotly contested as any of the Fischer - Spassky, Karpov - Korchnoi, or Kasparov - Karpov matches of recent chess history.

Chess Classic Mainz: First Chess960 World Championship Match between Leko and Swidler
by FM Hartmut Metz, April 2003 more English chess articles by Hartmut Metz T he cornerstones of Chess Classic Mainz 2003 have been laid: defending champion Viswanathan Anand will be challenged by Judit Polgar from 14 to 17 August. The 'mecca of rapid chess' will host an enticing duel of the sexes, after world champions Vladimir Kramnik and Ruslan Ponomariov both lost by narrow margins in the last two years. The world's best rapid chess player from India on one side, and the outstanding Hungarian lady player on the other side, will - hopefully - provide a great deal of action, not only for organiser Hans-Walter Schmitt who is looking forward to seeing these two in an eight games match: "Hardly any other contest would offer such excitement. The only woman who is able to compete with the world elite of the royal game and plays attractive chess will face the world's undisputed best blitz player," the Bad Soden resident rejoices. B T O T he traditional Ordix Open will offer the best available playing conditions on Saturday and Sunday (16 and 17 August). 500 players are expected to make the pilgrimage to the tenth staging of this competition. Dozens of grandmasters and international masters are expected to participate in the rapid chess open which has the largest prize fund of all. Last year, winners earned approximately 30,000 euros in the Ordix and the Chess960 Open. This year's supporting programme, with duels between Viswanathan Anand and Judit Polgar, and between Peter Leko and Peter Svidler, certainly offers a platform for rising stars of tomorrow. Outstanding talents such as Sergey Karjakin, who became the youngest grandmaster at the age of twelve, and his Ukrainian fellow countryman Andrey Volokitin will receive invitations for the Open.

Topalov Mounts Comeback to win MTel Masters
Veselin Topalov scored an impressive 4.5 out of his final 5 games to go from last to first and win the MTel Masters, one of the strongest tournaments of the year. Topalov not only won the tournament, but had a comfortable advantage, winning by a full point over Viswanathan Anand. After five rounds, Topalov was tied for last with Judit Polgar at just two points. At the half-way point in the competition, the field had stayed remarkably tight; only one point seperated first and last place. Then, Topalov began his amazing run. Round six saw all three white players win their games, with Topalov defeating Anand, while Ruslan Ponomariov defeated Vladimir Kramnik and Michael Adams fell to Polgar. Topalov won again in round seven, taking out Adams with the black pieces, and pulling into a first place tie with Ponomariov at 4 points. Judit Polgar finally found a way to slow down Topalov in round eight, holding him to a draw. However, no player found a way to win, leaving Topolov tied for first and setting up a crucial round nine matchup with Ponomariov.

Good news for those of us who have enjoyed his wide-ranging and punchy columns in his former newspaper.
