SAN DIEGO - A 16-year-old boy has won the U.S. Chess Championship, making him the youngest player to claim the title since 14-year-old Bobby Fischer won it in 1958. Hikaru Nakamura of White Plains, N.Y., won the $25,000 prize Monday after beating Alex Stripunsky, 34, of Rego Park, N.Y., in two overtime matches. The 11-day tournament in San Diego began with a field of 65 competitors. Nakamura, who was born in Japan, was taught chess by his stepfather and began playing competitively at age 7. A little more than two years later, he qualified as an American master. Nakamura became an American grandmaster last year, eclipsing by a few months Fischer's record of attaining grandmaster status at age 15. "Basically everything has been a blur," he said. He is tutored at home by his mother. He said school would take too much time from chess. His heroes are former chess champion Boris Spassky and Fischer. He said he didn't see himself as the next Fischer, the enigmatic and brilliant player who beat Spassky to win the world title in 1972.

Melody Amber, Round 8
Happy Easter, everyone!
Nothing of significance happened in the battle for the top spot, as Anand maintained his 2.5 point lead over the field - surprisingly, by winning on the Black side of the Petroff against Leko! Had Leko won, the tournament might have become much more interesting, but a 2.5 point lead with three rounds (six games) to go - one against cellar-dweller van Wely - ought to mean the trophy is as good as awarded. We shall see.
For today's amusement, then, a contrast for your consideration. We'll take a look at a pair of Pirc games - one from this event, the other not. The Pirc Defense (which generally arises via the move order 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6) is a sharp opening. Black baits White to take the center and attack, hoping that White will over-extend, the center will explode and Black will get to rule the wreckage. Sometimes the plan works and sometimes it doesn't, and we'll see what things look like in each case.
First we'll look at a game from the ongoing Foxwoods Open in Connecticut, in which current US champ Hikaru Nakamura pole-axes Israeli GM and one-time 2700 (that's 2700 FIDE; the ratings below are USCF) Ilya Smirin:

SEARCHING FOR HIKARU
Congratulations to Hikaru Nakamura A 16-year-old from White Plains, N.Y., has won the U.S. Chess Championship, the youngest player to win the title since 14-year-old Bobby Fischer in 1958. Hikaru Nakamura won the $25,000 prize Monday after beating Alex Stripunsky, 34, of Rego Park, N.Y., in two overtime matches. The matches were the highlight of the 11-day tournament that began with 65 competitors. It was viewed worldwide on the Internet. Nakamura said he has not decided how to spend the money, his biggest prize to date in his chess career. "Basically everything has been a blur," he said. That tournament was open to both men and women. In a separate tournament for women only, Rusudan Goletiani, 24, of Hartsdale, N.Y., beat Tatev Abrahamyan, 16, of Glendale for a $12,500 prize. "If chess is the 'game of kings,' these titleholders are the new royalty," said Erik Anderson, a Seattle entrepreneur and sponsor of the tournament. Nakamura last year became an American grandmaster, eclipsing by a few months Fischer's record of attaining grandmaster status at age 15.

Brazilian GM Giovanni Vescovi won the A section in Bermuda in impressive style, but it was 15-year-old Hikaru Nakamura of White Plains, New York, who was the big story making his third and final GM norm. In doing so Hikaru broke Bobby Fischer's 44-year-old record as the youngest American Grandmaster. Hikaru, who was only half a point from GM norms in Bolivia and San Francisco last year, is well on his way to bigger and better things. We look for him to be crossing the 2600 FIDE barrier shortly. Congratulations also go to chief sponsor Nigel Faulks and chief organizer Nigel Freeman for again putting on a first rate chess festival. GMA Final Standings: 1. Vescovi, Giovanni g BRA 2592 8.0; 2. Hikaru Nakamura becomes grandmaster
I played in a team chess tournament with Hikaru (he wasn't on my team) when I played for the Columbia University chess team . He was 10 or 11 at the time and a strong master.
Nakamura, who is home-schooled, said Fischer and current world champ Garry Kasparov are his heroes. Asked to compare himself to Fischer, he laughed that he himself is "more sane." - Link

Fast Winning Pace
Early in the month, he became the youngest U.S. champion, at 16, since Fischer, who won at age 14. Nakamura topped the 64-player field at the 2005 U.S. Chessmaster Championship in San Diego, which featured an unprecedented $285,962 in prizes. Winning his last-round game from a lost position, Nakamura shared first place with Alexander Stripunsky with 7 points in nine games, but swept the playoff 2-0. He won the event and $25,000 first prize on determination and great fighting spirit. Then on Dec. 9, Nakamura turned 17 and began to play a match in Cuernavaca, Mexico, against the 14-year-old Ukrainian prodigy Sergei Karjakin. This time Nakamura's 4 1/2-1 1/2 victory was convincing. Although he can out-calculate many players in tactical clashes, Nakamura also understands subtle positional play and is strong in the endgame. In the first game of the match, in the Scotch Game, Nakamura built his victory through the light squares that Karjakin could not have controlled.
