IRINA CRUSHED BY MARTHA by Sam Sloan
At the New York Open, held on April 5-7, 1996, it was no great surprise that there were two girls in the experts section, although that would have been a surprise not so many years ago. However, it was a surprise when both girls won both of their first two games.
Irina Krush, rated Chess Master
After that, in one of those fiendish computer created coincidences, they were paired against each other. (Again, only a few years ago, before there were computers, the diabolically minded tournament director would have done that on purpose.) Naturally, a lot of interest developed in this game and a big crowd gathered. I am sorry to say, however, that it was just a krush. Irina simply let Martha, 18, have too much in an early stage of the game, and Martha just rolled her up, or blew her off the board or however you want to put it. But, cheer up! Irina is only 12 years old, and, with a USCF rating of 2110, there is still some hope left for her. As for Martha, her story did not have a happy ending either. She remained near the lead until the last round. Then, in the last round, with the first prize of $8,000 at stake (by the way, that is Eight Thousand Dollars, this is not a typo) Martha was paired against Justin Sarkar, another student of her own chess teacher. (Ever wonder how these little kids get to be so good? They all have chess teachers!) Martha and the little boy she had to face in the last round are both trained by International Master Rafael Klovsky, whereas Irina is trained by Michael Trosman. (Don't try to look up these names in the rating list, because I don't believe that you will find them. You will just never guess where all of these professional chess trainers come from.)

Books Chess master Zhu Chen wins Accoona match in NY Chinese grandmaster Zhu Chen, 27, the ninth Women's World Chess champion, won the Accoona Women's World Chess Championship on Tuesday by defeating American rising star Irina Krush, 21, in a dramatic two-game match in the ABC Times Square Studios in New York.
Ninth Women's World Chess champion Zhu Chen of China.[newsphoto/file] Chen won one game and drew the other. Chen and Krush played in the windowed studio at street level, making the Accoona event the most public championship in the history of chess. Accoona.com, a new SuperCool Artificial Intelligence Search Engine, organized the match as a cultural exchange event between China and America. Accoona.com enjoys a unique partnership in China with the China Daily Information Company, the largest and official English Language Web destination in China, from which Accoona has access to over 10 million unique visitors per day. The Accoona Women's World Chess Championship was sanctioned by the New York City Sports Commission, the US Chess Federation, and the Association of Chess Professionals. When the first women entered an international chess tournament in London in 1897, commentators dismissed their chances on the grounds that "they would come under great strain lifting the leaded, wooden chess pieces." More than a century later, world-class chess is still dominated by men, but a few remarkable female players have made it to the highest echelons.

Kasparov vs. the World 22 October THINGS GET UGLY This was supposed to be the greatest battle in the history of chess: World number one, Garry Kasparov, taking on all comers in an online competition at Microsoft's Gaming Zone. Instead, it has turned into a virtual mudslinging contest. A little background: The match started June 21, with Kasparov playing the white pieces and the World Team, coached by teen chess stars Etienne Bacrot (16), Florian Felecan (19), Irina Krush (15) and Elisabeth Pähtz (14), playing black. The time control is one move a day, giving each side 24 hours to ponder their decision. The World Team's move is decided by registered members casting their votes, and the move receiving the majority vote is subsequently played. Simple enough, wouldn't you think? Not by a long shot! OK, things were running along smoothly for quite a while. The World actually giving Kasparov a run for his money, as Irina Krush, who seemed to be the only one taking this coaching business seriously, managed to get her moves elected 95% of the time. Krush spent several hours every day analysing the game, and her analysis and arguments were most convincing. At move 50, Kasparov had an obvious advantage in a rather messy Queen-ending, but most experts seemed to think black might hold with accurate play. And that's when the fun started:

'This doesn't look like Kansas anymore, Toto!' A few weeks ago ( Elsewhere on the Web 4 September 2004 ) we mentioned that 'September promises to be a big month for high-profile chess events'. Mid-September saw the Irina Krush - Almira Skripchenko match in New York City, followed by the Anatoly Karpov - Susan Polgar exhibition match in Lindsborg, Kansas. Krush won the rapid chess match (25'+10", meaning 25 minutes per game plus 10 seconds per move) by a score of 1.5-0.5 (+1-0=1). Karpov and Polgar drew 3-3 after three mini-matches of rapid chess (25'+5"; +1-0=1 for Karpov), random chess (15'+0"); +1-1=0), and blitz chess (5'+0", +0-1=1). ChessBase published excellent photo reports on the two matches. One of the most striking contrasts between the two events was the amount of publicity each received. The New York match was ignored outside the chess press, while the Kansas match received widespread publicity, and not just in Kansas.
