101. Talk:Vladimir Kramnik - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia
TalkVladimir kramnik kramnik is recognized as the world chess champion buthe is not the highest rated player in the world. Malathion 0614, 28 May

Talk:Vladimir Kramnik
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
However, the FIDE rating list is not an official determinant of status but rather a provisional or estimated ranking.
I don't think I understand this. The FIDE list is about as official as it gets, isn't it? If it isn't an indicator of who is world number two, then who is? Camembert The FIDE list is as official as those ESPN ratings of football teams. They may put Kramnik at number 2 but the fact is, the man is the world champion and is #1 until somebody beats him in a 35 game series.
Well, first of all, I think FIDE, which is after all the governing body for chess, is rather more oficial than ESPN. Granted, FIDE has its faults, but the Elo system is not one of them. Secondly, who says he has to be beaten in a 35 game series to not be world no. 1 any more? Kramnik - Kasparov was only a 16 game match, wasn't it, one of, if not the, shortest world championship matches ever. Thirdly, as it is the article says: "In the FIDE rating list for October 2002, Kramnik was ranked number two in the world, behind Kasparov." Why does this need qualification? OK, maybe there are other ways of ranking skill at playing chess, but this statement makes it clear that we're just dealing with the FIDE rating list. Why, after all, is a world championship match a better indication of who is world number one than an Elo list? Consequently, I've changed your statement somewhat. I hope it's OK for you. By the way, related to this: does anybody know if Kramnik has finished above Kasparov in a tournament since his match win (I've been taking a bit of a break from chess for a while, so I'm not up to date on these things).

Created: 19.10.2004 10:58 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 16:39 MSK document.write(get_ago(1124541588)); MosNews Kramnik said he was sure Leko would be a challenger again for the world title. Kramnik first seized the title four years ago from fellow Russian Garry Kasparov and may face off against his former nemesis to decide who will be the one and only world number one in chess. The match in Brissago, which has been recognized by the rival World Chess Federation FIDE, was billed as the first move towards reconciliation following an 11-year row that has torn the chess world apart. The classical championship was formed by the Association of Chess Professionals which broke away from FIDE in 1993 in a schism similar to the one that dogged the boxing world for many years.

I reported last week on the first two thirds of the annual Dortmund Sparkassen Chess meeting, leaving you after six of the nine rounds with the Dutchman Loek Van Wely at the helm. Both of the games, however, featured the youngest and bottom rated player, 19-year-old Arkadij Naiditsch, who had already shown impressive mettle. Before the tournament, you could have got enormous odds against Naiditsch winning but that is what happened a week ago today after three more exciting rounds. Van Wely drew in round seven as Black against Kramnik but Naiditsch defeated Peter Heine Nielsen in a long hard struggle. This left Van Wely and Naiditsch first equal with two to go and Naiditsch slipped into the lead with a quiet draw against Etienne Bacrot while Van Wely was defeated by Veselin Topalov.
