Dortmunder Schachtage Dortmund 1928 was played in the Kölnischer Hof from 27 July - 4 August. It was carried out at the occasion of the sixth congress of the Westfälischen Schachbund. Groups consisted of the master tournament, championship of Westfalen, main tournaments, minor competitions and daily events. pgn-file of fifteen Dortmund tournaments zip-file of CBase-files Kölnischer Hof (Stadtarchiv Dortmund) Sämisch won the master tournament in a convincing manner. He defeated his main rival Réti with an opening that would be called the Sämisch Variation. His play under time pressure was praised! Bogoljubow only shared the fourth prize, because he played too optimistic against two lesser players. He would win the super tournament Bad Kissingen during the second half of August. Colle won the brilliancy prize for his game against Spielmann. The tournament was played in the early days of hyper modern chess. Indian openings were at an experimental stage: the Nimzo-Indian, Queen’s Indian and King’s Indian Defences were applied. Draws were rare: only 28%! The difference with later tournaments did not lie in lesser perception, but insufficient technics to draw an even position: more blunders were made. DESCRIPTION Since he first burst onto the world chess scene in 1992, displaying a maturity of play far beyond his sixteen years, Vladimir Kramnik has been tipped as a future World Champion. Still only in his mid-twenties, he is now firmly consolidated in the world's top three. He has won numerous tournaments in many countries, and is one of the very few players regularly to hold his own with Kasparov. This book, Kramnik's first, describes his life and chess career, beginning with his unusual childhood. It features more than 50 of his best games, deeply annotated, plus numerous additional games and game extracts, including some from quickplay and blindfold events.

CHESS/FESTIVAL OF LEON
Kramnik dethrones Anand
ARVIND AARON VLADIMIR KRAMNIK, the Russian professional World chess champion, has become the new king of Advanced Chess. Not having won any event since July 2001, Kramnik lived up to the expectations of world champions by winning a closely contested match against three-time winner Viswanathan Anand. Advanced Chess, which is an invention of Garry Kasparov, is in its fifth year and this year's event was a part of the 15th Chess Festival of Leon. Players from the Open tournament turned spectators and watched the proceedings of this match. The weekend over which the match was held was dominated by Spain's defeat at the hands of South Korea in the penalty shoot out in the soccer World Cup quarter-finals. Nevertheless, a downtrend in spectator support was evident and the once heralded novelty of Advanced Chess seems to be losing its shine. In Advanced Chess, players are allowed to officially "cheat" and use a computer. They are offered a powerful desktop computer with the latest Chess Base database programme and fitted with chess engines. Engines are the vital programmes that seemingly understand chess and suggest moves in their depth. Anand used both engines, Junior and Fritz, while Kramnik was loyal to Fritz thereby conserving his computing resources. Both programmes are former world computer champions and none of the players used the current world computer champion Shredder.

CHESS/FIDE GRAND PRIX
Kasparov asserts supremacy
ARVIND AARON WINNING a match each day, World No. 1 ranked Garry Kasparov asserted his supremacy with ease to take the honours in the second FIDE Grand Prix rapid chess tournament in Moscow. Kasparov celebrated his return to the FIDE fold with this undefeated title triumph. ARVIND AARON
Kasparov exhibited better preparation and a greater will power to win the tournament. It was easy to predict the first place for Kasparov for the opposition did not consist of Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand. His main rivals, world champion Ruslan Ponomariov and Vassily Ivanchuk, both from Ukraine, failed to live upto their expectations. Playing in Moscow for the first time in six months, Kasparov scored with effortless ease against Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia and Joel Lautier of France in the first two rounds, with 2-0 sweeps. Thereafter the margins were narrower but yet comfortable. The find of the New Delhi world championship in 2000, Alexander Grischuk of Russia, lost 0.5-1.5 to Kasparov in the quarter-finals. If Kasparov had to sweat it out it was in the match against former world champion Alexander Khalifman, the Russian from St. Petersburg. Winning in the tie-break 2.5-1.5, Kasparov moved to the finals. Teimour Radjabov, the 15-year-old talent from Azerbaijan, who came through a tough pool of big names could not make his magic work against Kasparov. He got crushed in the black game and could not get anything better than a draw with the white. Kasparov had the finals in his grasp and won by 1.5-0.5.

History
Early History
Played throughout the civilized world, chess has fascinated people for centuries. Though it dates to antiquity (some researchers believe terra cotta pieces excavated from Mesopotamia of 6,000 B.C. were used in chess), there is debate as to which culture its origins should be credited. A Dominican Friar from Italy wrote a chess treatise in the Middle Ages. Its 1474 translation by Englishman William Caxton standardized play for a short time, but it was not until international play of the next century that rules were widely agreed upon. A Syrian, Philip Stamma, acclaimed as the pioneer of modern chess technique, helped popularize the game in the middle of the 18th cent. through publications and play that stressed strategy.
Modern Tournament Play
London was the site of the first modern international chess tournament in 1851. In officially sanctioned modern chess tournaments, players accumulate points won at various levels and can advance toward the top designation of grandmaster. Tournament play uses clocks to limit the time permitted for moves, and the concentration and fatigue of a match require players to be in good physical condition.

Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik
GM Vladimir Kramnik learned chess in the small seaside Russian town of Tuapse. His father, an artist, taught him. Kramnik took to it immediately and by age 7 was a first category player. By age 10, he defeated his first grandmaster. As a tournament player he was usually the youngest competitor. Upon reviewing some of Vladimir’s games, Mikhail Botvinnik quickly admitted him to his prestigious school, where Garry Kasparov also taught. At 24, Kramnik assumed the title of World Champion by defeating Kasparov in the Braingames match in London. What's New Join/Renew Shop News ... Governance

You Asked, He Answered
It was pretty informal, but I managed to get a few answers to your questions for Garry Kasparov. He dodged a few of the more complicated ones, but at least he was funny about it. Thanks for all your questions. He considers Kramnik the favorite against Leko (game one was in its early stages at this point). About Kramnik getting a rematch if he loses to Leko, Kasparov said, "It's none of my business. Probably Kramnik will think he should!" Re if he would play in a qualifier if he loses to Kasimdzhanov or Kramnik/Leko, "That's too many "ifs" for FIDE." Re if there will be rule changes in chess in the future. "I wouldn't rule it out. Many people are thinking about the openings." [Meaning things like balloted openings.] Re getting his My Story videos on DVD, or continuing them: "There are no plans, but these ChessBase [Fritz Trainer] DVDs are a better format anyway. No interviewer, just speaking directly to the camera." For those who don't know, Kasparov is making a series of these with many of them already recorded. I think the first to be released is on the Najdorf. Re who will be world champion in 2010. "A better question is how many champions will there be. And who will run such an event in 2010?"

Kramnik plays Makruk Thai
Sensation in the World of Makruk Thai - World Chess Champion Kramnik playing Makruk Thai for the first time
This is a real chess sensation: Vladimir Kramnik, 28, from Russia, the current World Champion in International Chess, is starting to get interested in Makruk Thai
Now Mr. Kramnik is looking forward to a new challenge in Makruk Thai: He would like to play a mixed match of Makruk Thai and International Chess against the current Champion of Makruk Thai in Thailand. That is Mr. Tor Pagnaam who has just opened his own club at Samut Prakam, a provincial city round about 30 kilometers southwest of Bangkok. Here are the highlights from the first match of Makruk Thai that the World Champion of Classic International Chess, Mr. Vladimir Kramnik, has ever played in Makruk Thai. Moreover this fragment seems to be historic - because that match seems to be first match of Makruk Thai ever that a World Champion of International Chess has played during the long history of chess.

This list is reformatted below. In addition, this list is available in rating order at htttp://www.samsloan.com/jan1999.htm All players rated 2500 and higher by the World Chess Council are included in this list.WCC World Chess Rankings are produced by the World Chess Council, Luis Rentero Sancez, Linares, Spain and Ken Thompson, New Jersey and are calculated by Vladimir Dvorkovich, Moscow, Russia. The most notable change from the pervious list is that FIDE “World Champion” Anatoly Karpov has fallen to number 15 on the list. Karpov defended his world title last year by winning a highly ill-conceived two-game blitz match against Anand, but both before and since the results of Karpov have been far below world championship caliber. In short, nobody takes Karpov seriously as a world champion any more.

Editorial (Aug 27)
Since then Charlottetown was able to host an Atlantic Invitational (ie Atlantic Closed). Tom was in the area for a chess camp and his participation allowed us to attract a few other players to come out. An early draw with Aaron Cooper came back to haunt him as the two finished with identical scores of 4.5/5. The x-table is available for viewing at the CFC web site. I will post all of the games someday (in the fall). Two weeks later Charlottetown hosted an "informal" match pitting the local boys against a crew from NB. The foursome from the SJ area took it on the chin going down 11.5-4.5 Of course our team was led by the return of Anthony Howarth who had a perfect score. Full results are available on the CFC web site, and again I plan to post the games on the web page some day in the fall. Justin's been in town for August, which means everyone's kept hopping between a CFC double RR (Anthony's leading with one round to go), Risk games, Dooley's for pool, kibitzing sessions, etc. He heads back to Waterloo over the weekend. As I speak the Canadian Closed Championship, Round 8 is just underway. Unfortunately no PEI reps this time, but we're all interested in the performances of Maritimers: Ronak K, Tyler R, and Eddie U. Former Maritimer, and an old buddy of mine, Robert Hamilton was in the hunt for an IM title, but had the two tough guys left ot face. Lesiege and Spraggett hold down the lead with 6/7 (2 draws each).
