QUICKVOTE Will world chess champion Vladimir Kramnik beat the Deep Fritz computer?
Yes No VIEW RESULTS It is a battle between human creativity and the monstrous calculating power of the machine. Vladimir Kramnik MANAMA, Bahrain World chess champion Vladimir Kramnik says he is ready to take on super-computer Deep Fritz, but accepts his "monstrous" challenger has the edge. The eight-game contest comes five years after IBM computer Deep Blue beat then-world champion Garry Kasparov the first time since the invention of a chess program in 1958 that a machine had beaten a human. IBM later cancelled the Deep Blue project and the program is no longer available for competition so Kramnik will meet the Deep Fritz CD-ROM application in the first match in Bahrain on Friday. The program can plot three million moves a second while Kramnik is capable of just one. The match, which is backed by Bahraini royalty, will be lucrative whatever the result. Kramnik will get U.S. $1 million if he wins, $800,000 if the match is drawn, and $600,000 if he loses.

In the 11th and final round, in Monte Carlo on Thursday, he beat Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria 1.5-0.5 to swell his points tally to 14.5 from 22 games and emerge triumphant. The former World champion, who did not play in the last year's traditional blindfold and rapid tournament, lost only one game, in blindfold against Morozevich, the winner of the 2002 edition. The blindfold tournament was won by Vladimir Kramnik, while Evgeny Bareev took first place in the rapid competition. The triumph was Anand's third in the unique tournament, which has one blindfold and one rapid game in each round. The Indian ace had earlier stamped his superiority in the event in 1997, when he won all the three titles at stake Rapid, Blindfold and Combined, and in 1994. Anand finished a full point ahead of nearest rivals Peter Leko of Hungary and 2001 champion Alexander Morozevich of Russia. Though Anand did not finish first in the individual rapid and blindfold categories, his steady performance in both was enough to net him the champion's crown.

Vladimir Kramnik
Vladimir Kramnik (born June 25, 1975) is a Russian chess player. In 2000, he beat Garry Kasparov in a 16 game match played in London. In the eyes of the participants and many observers, this was a match for the world championship, and made Kramnik the chess world champion, although the International Chess Federation (FIDE) did not recognise the match as such.
Kramnik was born in the town of Tuapse, on the shores of the Black Sea. As a child, he studied in the chess school established by Mikhail Botvinnik. His first notable result in a major tournament was his gold medal win as first reserve for the Russian team in the 1992 Chess Olympiad in Manila. His selection for the team caused some controversy in Russia at the time, as he was only sixteen years old and had not yet been awarded the grandmaster title, but his selection was supported by Garry Kasparov. He went on to win eight games, draw one, and lose none.
The following year, Kramnik played in the very strong tournament in Linares. He finished fifth, beating the then world number three, Vassily Ivanchuk along the way. He followed this up with a string of good results, but had to wait until 1995 for his first major tournament win at normal time controls, when he won the strong Dortmund tournament, finishing it unbeaten.

ImgBorder('/i/encyclo/k/kramnik.jpg',220,242,1); Kramnik's father was an artist and his mother a music teacher. Although no one in his home played serious chess, Kramnik learned to play when he was four years old from his father. Kramnik was fascinated by the game and began taking instruction at the local Pioneers (a Soviet youth organisation) at the age of five, becoming champion of Tuapse at seven. At the age of 11 he left the ranks of first category players and became a "candidate" master. More important, he came to the attention of the famous Soviet Chess School and its headmaster, former world champion Mikhail Botvinnik . Only the most talented pupils in the Soviet Union were invited to study chess there, and Kramnik made rapid progress.

PLAYER ChessPress My open letter to Vladimir Kramnik Dear Mr. Kramnik, I am writing to you, the World Chess Champion, in the hope that this letter will not take up much of your time and, possibly, it will make you ponder over some of the issues that are worrying me and, and I am sure, many chess fans. In the course of 50 years, or to be more exact, since 1951 when I came to know chess moves, I have been following World Chess Championship matches. In other words, I was hooked up for chess at the time of the Botvinnik-Bronstein match. And last year I was on-line all the time waiting for the chess news from London. I would like to congratulate you whole-heartedly on your victory over Garri Kasparov, which brought you the World Title. It was really a grandiose victory since you defeated the chess player whose name has become the symbol of chess. The chess player who seemed invincible has been unseated by you from the chess throne! Your victory today appears as another labour of Hercules. I presume some time later in future it will be regarded as a triumph of David over Goliath. Your victory is well deserved. However, it has been largely underestimated - and this is not only my opinion - by chess contemporaries. What is more, everything is being done to belittle your success, your creative achievement. Very often we hear today: Kramnik...World Champion!? Who is Kramnik? The World Champion today is Anand, - this is what we hear from those who recognise only the FIDE Championship. They say that Kasparov in the match was definitely off form, that your victory was just a matter of chance etc.
