Greatest Chess Players Authors of Books
Gioachino Greco (1600-1634)
Play as Gioachino Greco (not complicated puzzles) (chess exercises, for clients) The greatest and strongest chess player of XVII century. The author of a very famous book (150 games with variants), where he showed the important role of quick development, combinational play. Some of these games has interest nowadays to teach beginners. Greco is a first genius of the romantic chess school.
Philipp Stamma (18th century)
Solve studies of Stamma (not very complicated puzzles) (chess exercises, for clients) The biggest author of studies of 18th century. His studies are rather combinational ones. He also adapted some ideas from shatrandge to the modern chess.
Francois Philidor (1726-1795)
The greatest and strongest (without any doubts) chess player of XVIII century, the first big "positional" player in history; the famous (musical) composer in his time. The author of the book "Analyses of the Chess Game" which had a revolutionary meaning. "The pawns are the soul of the chess game" (Philidor). He considered that the pieces only help them, their role is big in the endspiel - not in the opening. He was very successful in the endgame, some his analyses are very accurate and useful here. In 1747 he outplayed Philipp Stamma, his strongest opponent, with result +8, -1, =1.

KATERYNA LAHNO: 13-YEAR-OLD FEMALE PRODIGY
UNTIL the 19th Century, women were not welcome in chess clubs in Europe and America. Change eventual came around, but it was painfully slow. When the first women's international tournament was organized in London in 1897, an editorial in the Times of London cautioned that the ladies competing would "come under great strain lifting the leaded, wooden chess sets." The real breakthrough for the fairer sex came with the rise of the first Women's World Champion (1927-1944) Vera Menchik-Stevenson, who was able to compete at the top in the men's game with moderate success. Women's World Champion (1962-1978) Nona Gaprindasvili became the first woman to be awarded the men's GM title in 1979, yet Bobby Fischer in full MCP mode in his prime once boasted he could give her knight odds and win. However, it took another fifty years for Judit Polgar to emerge as a real threat to the male hegemony in chess.

FIDE Ratings April 2005 World Top 100 Guest Book Feedback Home ... Associations News 2002 Rousing reception accorded to British Champion Ramesh Aug 13 Landing in home town is always a pleasure, more so when you win a big International event, make history with a cloud nine performance. But for the unassuming Madras chess master Ramesh, who conquered all that came his way at the Smith and Williamson British Championship at Torquay, England last week, it was the result of hard work and taking it game by game. "I just played my natural game and wasn't counting on the results in the second half" said a contented Ramesh, who gains a twelve game Grandmaster Norm, for his fortnight's work at England. Receiving the Champion at the Anna International Airport, Madras with pride and delight was his mother, who fed him with delicious sweets, completing the occasion. Present on the occasion were scores of chess enthusiasts waving the Indian flag, officials from Tamil Nadu Chess Association including, Mr K Murali Mohan, Mr Thirukalathi, Mr V Hariharan, Mr Ramaswamy and scribes and camera crew from Television networks. Other top chess players present on the occasion were International Master Tejas Bakre (enroute to his tournament in Abu Dhabi) and Ramesh's colleague and friend FIDE Master T S Ravi. Talking about his all conquering home-run victories over four Grandmasters, Ramesh said, "I took my chances and just played it as one game after the other. The win with Barua was pleasing and the final game victory over McShane in a tight contest, gave me the Championship." Adding this Norm to the one he got at Biel Open, Switzerland last year, Ramesh is just on the right track to complete the Grandmaster title requirements. "My immediate target is to become a Grandmaster" said the young Indian Oil Corporation Officer. On becoming a part of history, being the second Indian after Mir Sultan Khan, who won the event thrice 70 years back, to win the prestigious British Open, Ramesh said," I am very happy to emulate a great player and be a part of history."
