http://www.olimpbase.org/articles/sultan_khan.html
Olympic Heroes: Mir Sultan Khan
He was one of most intriguing personalities that have ever appeared at the Olympiads. Originating from today's Pakistan (born in 1905) he went to Europe in 1929 brought by his master, Sir Umar Hayat Khan, and came back to Asia just four years later. He spent rest of his life in his homeland, away of any public chess activities. He received a small patrimony after his master's death which let him farm happily for the rest of his life in Punjab. He died in 1966.
Despite of his exotic looks and suits, with a funny, bulged turban over his head, he was a player of ultimate strength although he used to play Indian version of chess before he came to Europe (thee differencies are minor but still important at top level). Whether his master took him to Europe because of his unique chess talent which he was apparently aware of and whether Sultan Khan was a slave of a maharaja or just a servant is not clear. Reuben Fine reported once that he came to a dinner to Sultan Khan master's house and was embarrased to see the Indian grandmaster serving him the dishes, yet the validity of the story has been questioned many times.
Sultan Khan achieved outstanding successes during his short stay in Europe. He played at top British board at 1930, 1931 and 1933 Olympiads. He never did worse than 50% leading Great Britain to decent top 10 places. He won British Chess Championship three times (1929, 1932, 1933) missing the title only once, in 1931. He beat dr Savielly Tartakower in a friendly match and defeated a. e. Alekhine and Capablanca in a single game. He won shared 3rd place in Hastings 1932/33 behind Flohr and Pirc. His Chessmetric ratings had been close to 2600 making him world top 20 member at the time and very close to top 10 standards. He is unofficially recognized as first Asian grandmaster.

Who else? Certainly the Hungarians, again lead by Mar³czy were very strong. Germany lead by Ahues and S¤misch aspired for top places. Flohr was top board of Czechoslovak team but he did not have enough support from his team-mates. US team with Kashdan and Marshall on top boards was considered strong enough to earn the medal. The games were very hard, 9 teams were in the lead in the course of the event and most time there was no clear leader, just the leading group. Each team lost at least two matches. The games were organised beyond reproach and the standard of games was very high. The FIDE congress debating parallelly decided that since 1931 fixed board order should be adopted. The new rules made in Hamburg laid the foundations of future improvments and amendments to the Olympic regulations.

As soon as I got into The Ideas Behind the Chess Openings by Reuben Fine, I
reached a point in which I was confused. The first opening, the Centre Game is
shown as 1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd4 3. Qxd4 Nc6 4. Qe3 Nf6 5. Nc3 Be7
11. f3 O-O-O.
The next move white castles queenside. However, I do not see a problem with taking the bishop with the f-pawn. I'm sure that the reason is an obvious one, but I can not find a move for black to even the advantage, and being confused by the first opening is rather embarassing. Last Edited on Sunday, 17 January 1999 at 22:42 Most of the material assembled below was taken from volumes of English Counties' Chess Unions Combined Yearbooks, which were very kindly supplied by Maurice H Carter . If readers have an additional material or corrections/amendments to material already published, I would be delighted to feature them here. RHS Stevenson (pictured left) is now better known as the husband of famous Woman's World Champion Vera Menchik (1906-1944). His full name was Rufus Henry Streatfeild Stevenson (1878-1943) and he was a noted chess organiser in the UK. He was Kent County Champion in 1919. In 1931 he edited the Home News for the British Chess Magazine and dealt with subscriptions. In 1931 Stevenson and his first wife (herself a four-times British Ladies' Champion) lived in SW4 and played for the Lewisham St Mary's club, but the first Mrs Stevenson died in a tragic and bizarre accident in August 1935. She had been picked to play in the Women's World Championship in Warsaw and arrived in Posen (now known as Poznan) by plane from Berlin. Having completed the passport formalities, she was returning to the aircraft. Thinking it was just leaving, she ran for it, and unfortunately approached the front rather than the back, ran straight into the propellors which had just been started up and was killed. Stevenson married Vera Menchik in 1937, at which time he was the Kent County Hon.Sec, having previously been the match captain. He later became the BCF Hon.Sec.

While segregation of gender in chess wasn't always true -woman and men often played together, both in Literature and reality before 1800; Shakespeare's only chess scene has Miranda playing Ferdinand in the last act of The Tempest; many paintings depict men and women playing at chess together; Ben Franklin, as well as Paul Morphy were fond of playing against ladies. Women, however, were often barred from the private clubs as well as the coffeehouses and the taverns where these chess clubs developed in the 19th century.
By the middle of that century, female players started to gain their own chessic distinction - separate from men . The first chess clubs exclusively for women were organized in The Netherlands in 1847. The first chess book written by a woman, The ABC of Chess, by "A Lady" (H.I. Cooke), appeared in England in 1860 and went into 10 editions. The first women's tournament was sponsored in 1884 by the Sussex Chess Association.
Women also gained a certain prominance in postal and problem chess during this period. An American woman, Ellen Gilbert, defeated a strong English amateur, George Gossip, twice in an international correspondence match in 1879 - announcing checkmate in 21 moves in one game and in 35 moves in the other!! Edith Winter-Wood composed more than 2,000 problems, 700 of which appeared in a book published in 1902. The first woman player to gain attention in direct OTB competition with men was Vera Menchik (1906-44) of Great Britain.

Following our recent list of American Chess Champions (see the link box in the upper right corner), we continue with the British and Canadian champions (see the link box again). The link box entries under 'Elsewhere on the Web' list champions in other categories : women, juniors, seniors, and regional. The British title has been won by 46 different players, the Canadian title by 41. A careful comparison of both lists reveals that Abe Yanofsky managed to win both championships : the British title in 1953 and the Canadian title eight times between 1941 and 1965. The British championship has long been open to any Commonwealth player. The year 2003 may well have marked the last occurrence of this cultural generosity. After Indian players captured the title in 2002 and 2003, the British Chess Federation established new eligibility requirements. In the future the tournament will be restricted to British citizens or residents.
