Chess Champion Garry Kasparov Challenges the World on MSN.com
Innovative Chess Tournament Expected to Be the Largest Interactive Competition Ever
This month, world chess champion Garry Kasparov will challenge "the world" via the Internet on the MSN TM network of Internet services, in what is expected to be the largest interactive competition ever. People from around the globe, of any level of expertise, can join forces to play Kasparov in a chess tournament beginning June 21 by logging on to http://www.MSN.com/ and clicking on games. Beginning today, MSN will offer a wide range of activities on the MSN Gaming Zone, including a "pretournament" to sharpen chess skills; chats and workshops with expert players to discuss strategy; and a sweepstakes to win a trip to meet Kasparov in person. "Imagine playing in a historic chess game against the greatest chess player of our time," said Yusuf Mehdi, director, Consumer and Commerce Group. "MSN and the Internet will make it possible for anyone around the globe to try and checkmate Garry Kasparov."

GARRY KASPAROV made the moves only he could make. Calculated, precise, timely and above all, effective. After dominating the chess world for just over two decades, the Russian made his last move in professional chess. He decided it was time to move on. The strongest and arguably the greatest player in chess history, Kasparov, is no longer "secretive" about his plans. Having battled the politics of chess since 1993, the Russian will now concentrate on mastering the chess of politics. "As a chess player, I did everything I could, even more. Now I want to use my intellect and strategic thinking in Russian politics. I will do everything in my power to resist (Russia's President Vladimir) Putin's dictatorship. My opinion is that the country is headed down the wrong path now."

With Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff For the story behind the story... Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 8:30 p.m. EST Chess Champ Kasparov Sounds Putin Warning It didn't work with Adolf Hitler and it's not likely to work with Russian President Vladimir Putin either.
That's the ominous warning of 1980s world chess champ Garry Kasparov. Story Continues Below Writing in Tuesday's Wall Street Journal, Kasparov says as long as the West continues to support Putin as he moves toward re-establishing Soviet-era authoritarianism, the Russian leader is going to continue along that course. In 1936, the world thought that allowing Berlin to host the Olympics would placate a power-mad Hitler. As history shows, it didn't. Neville Chamberlain, Britain's prime minister at the time, also tried appeasement with Hitler. Chamberlain's reward was the Battle of Britain in 1940, in which Hitler tried to use his air force to level the island nation. "Treating dictators kindly doesn't soften a regime; it only makes it more arrogant and aggressive," Kasparov wrote.

On ESPN2's chess championships, Garry Kasparov tries to stop the rise of the machines.
By Dennis Cass
Posted Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at 2:39 PM PT
Check ... out the show, mate There was a moment during yesterday's game between chess legend Garry Kasparov and computer program X3D Fritz where you didn't have to be an expert to know that man would triumph over machine. Faced with losing a crucial pawn, X3D Fritz balked, moving a bishop that was otherwise out of play. "Bishop to D6," snorted ESPN2 commentator and grandmaster Maurice Ashley. "I can guarantee that 99.9 percent of all humans would not play that move. And the other percentage would be inebriated with alcohol." For Ashley and for fellow announcers Paul Hoffman and Yasser Seirawan, the hiccup provided not just a rare opportunity to gloat, but also some much-needed comic relief for the folks at home who have watched Kasparov struggle against what Hoffman calls a "silicon beast." X3D Fritz, which according to Hoffman can consider 4 million moves per second, has proven to be a formidable opponent. The computer forced a draw in Game 1 and in Game 2 beat Kasparov, who by his own admission made a mistake that the chess commentators called a "howler." Yesterday, Kasparov ended up victorious, bringing the overall match to a tie, which means tomorrow's final game of the 2003

Humanities, Athletics, and Medicine Symposium Panel Discussion with Garry Kasparov, World Chess Champion
The panel discussion featuring Garry Kasparov is a component of the "Limits of Performance" symposium that will be taking place on campus May 7-8. Schedule of Symposium Events in May Topic Description for Limits Symposium Garry Kasparov (pronounced: Kas-PAH-rof) was born in 1963 in Baku, Azerbaijan. In 1980 he was the world junior champion, in 1981 the Soviet champion, and in 1985, at the age of 22, the youngest ever world chess champion, after defeating Anatoly Karpov. He has now been the top chess player in the world for 14 years and there are no signs of his winning streak stopping anytime soon. A month ago, Kasparov played in one of the world's most competitive chess events held in Linares, Spain. Kasparov showed the world again why he is number one in the world, going undefeated. An addition of 18 points to his rating in this tournament, and of 9 more points in another world-class tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, resulted in a record rating of 2839 points. This is the highest rating that has been achieved in the history of chess. Because of the way the rating system works, Kasparov will need to show the same caliber performance in the future in order to maintain his rating. The next best players in the world suffered significant losses in Linares, and unless they compensate for this damage soon, there will be only five or six grandmasters with a rating greater than 2700.

What is Kasparov 's greatest game of chess? His most epic? His most brilliant? His most accurate contest, maybe by both parties? His best ending? His best attack? (The number of possible categories is almost endless.) This is a page that is devoted to that subject. Unfortunately, without Kasparov's direct input, we may never know. It is also a task that is necessarily given to bias, opinion, and many other subjective factors. To be honest, every good chess player has their own favorite Kasparov game, (Or a Capa game, or a Fischer contest ... etc.); and they are not always the same game! I think that after over 25 years of deep study of chess, most of it which occurred during Garry's heyday, (meaning that I have studied many of these exquisite encounters - and many of these struggles I have personally DEEPLY annotated on one of my web pages); that his finest game is his victory over GM Veselin Topalov . (Click here While not a perfect game, it is one of the most finely and deeply calculated attacks that has ever been played. Many GM's have praised this game as the finest of the whole of Garry's career.
