Born in Baku on April 13, 1963. Graduated from Azerbaijan's Institute of Foreign Languages. Has played chess since he was five years old. Took lessons from ex- world champion Mikhail Botvinnik at a Soviet chess school.
Kasparov debuted as a member of Azerbaijan's team at national youth games in Vilnius in 1973. He became Chess Master when he won the Sokolsky memorial games in Minsk 1978. Two years later he earned the title of Soviet champion. In 1979 became grandmaster.
In 1980 he was awarded four gold medals to mark his outstanding high-school achievements, victory at the Dortmund world youth championships, victory at the European championships of national teams in Skara (Sweden) and victory at the World Olympiad as a member of the Soviet team.
Kasparov began his quest for the world title when he was 18.
His firsts match with World Champion Anatoly Karpov was suspended in 1984. The second match (November 10, 1985) earned him the world title, the thirteenth in chess history. He confirmed the title in matches with Karpov in London and Leningrad and again in Seville (Spain, 1987) and New York and Lyons (France) in 1990. He won world championships on two more occasions by beating Nigel Short in London in 1993 and Vishvanatan Anand in New York in 1995.
Kasparov is a seven-times Olympic champion and winner of numerous tournaments. His first appearance under the Russian (not Soviet) flag was at the 1990 world championships.

The European and Russian governments are living in two different worlds "Business is politics in up-to-date Russia. The government controls all aspects of the nation's life and the commercial field is not an exception," the chairman of the committee "2008: Free Choice", Grand Master Garry Kasparov said on September 13th at the Baltic Forum of Development in Hamburg. Below you can find excerpts from the chess player's speech. "We must draw a distinction between the current Russian leadership and the citizens of Russia. The rich culture, creativity, the knowledge and humanity of our nation is still alive and means a lot more to the world than the whole Russian oil," Kasparov said. "High oil prices make the only support for Putin's regime. Citizens of other oil-extracting countries do not derive profit from the oil wealth. Both oil and all other natural resources of Russia should have their own markets and open ways to reach those markets." Garry Kasparov believes that Russia should unite with Europe. "This union would be important to the Russian nation for social and economic reasons. The traditions of the European democracy and the relative economic stability will help Russia become a modern state. However, Putin's regime mixes up the past and the present. A lot of Russia's neighbors are still being suspicious about Russia, and they have reasons for it. An order in the past is necessary for the future progress. The European and Russian governments are living in two different worlds," Kasparov stated in Hamburg.

Garry Kasparov Teaches Chess Volume 1 Genre: Strategy/Simulation Developer: Fritz Publisher: Viva Media # of Players: Release Date: ESRB Rating: Everyone Rent It: red octane Written by: Erik Hansen So, can board games ported to the computer really be considered videogames? Yes… but only in the most literal sense of the phrase. Garry Kasparov Teaches Chess doesn’t do much to help their reputation. The game is fully playable on a DVD player. Graphics-wise it’s about as flashy as a chess game can get, though I would personally recommend the old 1988 game Battle Chess , which had some excellent combat animations and could fit entirely on one floppy disk. With GKTC , however, it’s clear we’ve entered the modern era of computerized chess – and honestly, it’s not that much different from the old days.

Is Garry Kasparov a Swindler?
An Israeli bank blames the chess player of losing a source of income and of a 1.6 million dollars damage
As is known, chess is the art of sheer, pragmatic but still elegant calculation. That is why, any dealings with a chess player are dangerous to people’s reputation and purse. Especially with Chess World Champion since 1985, Garry Kasparov. Men of this kind can even surpass Santa Klaus with making Christmas presents. As it turned out, Garry Kasparov is an expert at making unpleasant surprises.
On the eve of 2003, the First International Bank of Israel is blaming Russian chess player Garry Kasparov of the refusal to pay off a loan at the rate of 1.6 million dollars, the Bloomber agency informs. The bank is deeply insulted with the insolence of the chess champion and has sent an appeal to the Delaware circuit court.
Russian lawyers would have estimated the actions of the chess champion as a fraud with a high degree of cynicism. The Israeli bank provided a loan at the rate of 1.6 million dollars to the chess champion in September 2000. Garry Kasparov guaranteed repayment of the loan with shares of his new company Kasparov Chess Online which he gave to the bank. However, as attorneys of the bank say, the debtor suddenly issued an instruction to close the website and abandoned the company. As is said in the bank’s appeal to the court, Garry Kasparov broke an agreement concluded with the bank when he closed the website, thus the company was deprived of its source of income.

Interview with Garry Kasparov
At your 38 years old you are still the number one. What is your motivation, now that you have already won everything?
I have always loved playing chess, and for me playing chess is about “winning”, and I couldn’t imagine myself playing chess for fun, because winning is a part of the challenge. At one point, when you are used to fighting for your number one spot, you will not be able to imagine yourself giving it up without a fight. In many years I faced several crucial points when people said “Garry will no longer be the best player”, and it encourages me, it strengthens my determination to fight again.
And it’s very clear that my success in 2001 was dictated by the disaster in London. Also my very successful years in 1999 and 2000 resulted from growing criticism of me in 1997 when I didn’t play much chess and Anand was doing very well. So, as long as I have my energy in place, I will be fighting.
In your last match against Kramnik you were only able to defeat him in the blitz games. Whose turn is it now, yours or his?

In Game 3 of the Man vs. Machine World Computer Chess Championship, Garry Kasparov had a way to force a draw but thought that he had better. Instead, Garry blundered and found that he had lost.
Game 3. Position before 32. Rh5. Kasparov can force a draw with 32. Ng6+ Kg7 33. Nf4 Kh8. Instead, Kasparov played 32. Rh5 which loses to 32. ... Nxd4 threatening mate with 33. ... Nb3+.
The game is almost too difficult to analyze. It began the same as in Game 1, until the computer varied on move 6. Kasparov got the advantage in the opening but could not find a way to win. The computer played moves no human would ever play, castling right into Kasparovfs strong kingside attack. Later, the computer grabbed a pawn few humans would dare to take. Kasparov seemed to be tottering on the brink of defeat, but found good moves. Finally, Kasparov found a way to force a draw. However, he thought he had more and could win. His winning move turned out to be a blunder and he lost. The game was filled with incredible moves. For example, 22. ... Qb8 was a move nobody expected. The critical position came on move 32. Here, Kasparov could play 32. Ng6+. The computer cannot play 32. ... Kg8 because there will be a knight fork coming up. After 33. Qxf5 Qxf5 34. Ne7+ forking the king and queen, White wins.

Those who meet Kasparov are struck by his intensity Garry Kasparov's retirement at the age of 41 brings to an end 20 years of domination of the world of chess.
In the black-and-white world of chess, Kasparov is regarded by many as the greatest. There are those who are drawn to the flashes of brilliance of the eccentric former US world champion Bobby Fischer, but Kasparov's relentless two-decade crushing of the opposition has left most chess aficionados awed. Like a Schumacher or a Sampras, the genius from Baku has an aura of invincibility that will live long in the memory. He may have lost his championship to the younger Russian Vladimir Kramnik in 2000, but he is retiring as the undisputed world number one. English grandmaster and Sunday Telegraph chess columnist Nigel Short is one of those who has been on the wrong end of Kasparov's brilliance, losing their world championship clash in 1993.

He made the surprise announcement after winning a prestigious tournament in Spain for the ninth time. "I will continue to play chess because it is a lot of fun, but no longer on a professional level," he said. The 41-year-old said he had made the decision because of the intense pressure which he had been under over recent years. The chess grandmaster, a leading critic of Mr Putin, heads a group of top Russian liberals who have joined forces to keep Vladimir Putin from staying in the Kremlin after 2008. His group, called Committee 2008: Free Choice, has criticised Mr Putin's control over Russia's parliament and the country's media, and what it calls the "flat-out falsification of the last election's results". They have vowed to ensure a new president is elected in 2008.

NEW YORK (AP) World chess champion Garry Kasparov tied his computerized opponent X3D Fritz in a final match, leaving the four-game series in a draw. The match pitted Kasparov against a 12-year-old computer program that has recently been developed into a virtual reality game by X3D Technologies. The previous three games in the series averaged more than three hours each; Tuesday's clocked in at under two hours. "It looked like a short game, but for me it was not a game of chess, it was more of a gamble," said Kasparov, 40. "It's very, very important that we're learning. Machines are getting better but we're also learning." Kasparov and his computer opponent entered game four tied at 1.5 points each. Kasparov tied the computer last week in the first game, lost the second and won the third. The International Computer Games Association and the U.S. Chess Federation have sanctioned the match as the first official world chess championship in virtual reality.
