CLICK TO ENLARGE (Some items pictured may not be included. See product description.)
DESCRIPTION Garry Kasparov has dominated the chess world for more than twenty years. His dynamism and preparation have set an example that is followed by most ambitious players. Igor Stohl has selected 74 of Kasparov's best and most instructive games from 1973 to 1993, and annotated them in detail. The emphasis is on explaining the thought behind Kasparov's decisions, and the principles and concepts embodied by his moves. Stohl provides a wealth of fresh insights into these landmark games, together with many new analytical points. This makes the book outstanding study material for all chess enthusiasts. In 1985 Garry Kasparov became the youngest world chess champion in history by defeating Anatoly Karpov in an epic struggle. Twenty years later he is still world number 1, and is an internationally renowned figure, famous even among the non-chess-playing public following high-profile events such as his matches against IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer, and the Kasparov vs. World game in 1999.

He will partner with the Russian group known as the Committee 2008 (Komitet 2008), whose members are attempting to influence the 2008 Russian election that will replace Putin . The champion said he also wants to write books, with chess being among the subjects, but he will not play any more at the professional level. 11 March 2005: Garry Kasparov retires from professional chess to spend time on battles off the board. Dramatic news today as the world's greatest ever chess player Garry Kasparov announced that he is to give up competitive chess and devote his time to writing and to Russian politics, in particular, his opposition to President Vladimir Putin. Kasparov made the announcement after he had succeeded in winning the famous Linares chess event. He scored 8 out of 12 points as did Bulgarian Veselin Topalov (who beat Kasparov in the last round), but Kasparov took the title as he has scored the most wins with the black pieces. Kasparov said: "Before this tournament I made a conscious decision that Linares 2005 will be my last professional [tournament], and today I played my last professional game." Kasparov told the press conference at Linares: "... by the end of this year my new book will appear ... the tentative title of the book is How Life Imitates Chess. It is a very important project because I want to demonstrate to a mainstream audience how the game of chess can explain the decision-making process in many walks of life." Kasparov added: "I devote a certain amount of time to Russian politics, as every decent person should do, who opposes the dictator Vladimir Putin."

Kasparov on sports: 'Human actions in extreme conditions' at Stanford BY DIANE MANUEL A funny thing happened on his way to Stanford last Thursday night, Garry Kasparov told the overflow audience at the SEQ Teaching Center that had gathered to hear him speak about the "Limits of Performance." He was late for the talk, he said apologetically, because he'd had to wait in the lobby of his hotel for 30 minutes while an "antiquated machine" printed out the 11 pages of his speech. "Can you believe that a hotel in Silicon Valley does not have a laser printer?" he asked, grinning, enjoying the moment immensely. "Not even a chess player can predict some of the obstacles that happen, but it seems I was kept away from you by the limits of the performance of the hotel." Related Information: World chess champion since 1985 and, some have argued, the best professional chess player ever, Kasparov carries himself with well-earned confidence. But there is also a streak of the rebel and a hint of the prankster in the Azerbaijani native. As flash bulbs exploded in the auditorium, Kasparov surveyed the audience thoughtfully. Fastening on several different youngsters in the crowd, he welcomed them with private winks.

Photo: Garry Kasparov, who grew up playing chess in Baku. In 1984, he became the World Chess Champion at age 22. In September 1995, he will defend his title against Anand of India at the World Trade Building in New York City.
Chess has strong roots in Azerbaijan. Some claim it dates back to the sixth century, perhaps even earlier. References to chess have been made by poets of the region in twelfth century works. During the Soviet period (after a shaky beginning when chess was nearly banned because it was perceived as a game for the bourgeoisie), the USSR became known for producing the world's best players. The image of the chess player came to epitomize the ideal Soviet man-possessed with logic, will, and decisiveness: man as the perfect synthesis of thought and action.
Therefore, to focus on "Leisure and Play in Azerbaijan" without discussing the game of chess would be like trying to cover American sports without discussing football or baseball. And to highlight chess without featuring Garry Kasparov would be like setting up a chess board without a King.
We found Garry in Croatia. Though extremely occupied with preparing for the upcoming World Champion Games, he very willingly assisted us with this article.

    Autumn 1995 (3.3) Computer Challenges
World's Chess Champion IBM's Deep Blue to Play Garry Kasparov by Marcus Hopkins
Man vs. Machine. We've heard it so many times before. But this time it's a struggle between intellects. International Business Machines (IBM) has recently announced that their specially-designed chess computer, Deep Blue, will soon be playing World Chess Champion, Garry Kasparov.
The invitation for the match was initiated by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in commemoration of its 50th anniversary. The event will take place February 10-17, 1996, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia and continue for six, full-length games. Kasparov, who was born and grew up in Baku, Azerbaijan, has held the World Title since 1985 when, at the age of 22, he became the youngest World Chess Champion ever.
    Is it Fair?
"We're not trying to embarrass the world's best chess player," insists Gerald Present, a physicist who works in IBM's Public Relations. "Obviously, Garry wouldn't waste his time and risk his reputation if it weren't a challenge for him and if he didn't think he had a good chance of winning."
According to IBM scientists, Deep Blue is simply a project in computer science that enables them to understand more about a particular kind of computing called "parallel processing", a research effort that IBM has been involved with for the past 15 years. Parallel processing is the technique built in to modern computers enabling them to achieve their highest possible speeds.

Azerbaijan (then in the USSR) as Garri Kimovich Wainshtein. He became the world junior champion at the age of 16 and was International Chess Federation (FIDE) champion from 1985 to 1993. His first title match (Sept., 1984–Feb., 1985) against Anatoly Karpov was the longest in chess history. After 48 games, the psychological and physical strain on Karpov, who was leading but appeared likely to lose, caused chess authorities to end the match inconclusively amid controversy. Kasparov won a rematch six months later, becoming the youngest world champion ever. He defended his title against Karpov in 1986, 1987, and 1990. In 1993 Kasparov broke with FIDE and formed the rival Professional Chess Association, becoming its champion. In 1996 he became the first world champion to lose to a computer in a game played with time controls, but he won the match. In 1997, however, the computer, IBM's “Deep Blue,” defeated him in a rematch (see also

Garry Kasparov has made three visits to Oakham School. In 1997 he gave an eight board clock simultaneous against opposition including two World Junior Champions - Harriet Hunt (girls U-21) and Nicholas Pert, OO, (boys U-18). The games were shown live both in the venue (the School Library) and over the Internet. The oldest player was the former Oakham Headmaster John Buchanan (81) and the youngest was Matthew Moore (9), who later received an Oakham Chess Scholarship. Garry won 8-0, which continued his amazing record in this form of chess. He has also defeated the National teams of Germany, Switzerland, Argentina, Israel, Brazil, and France! During the visit, Garry announced the Kasparov Chess Scholarship, and duly sent several suitable pupils to Oakham, who combined chess and academic ability. Garry returned to the School to give a Junior Training Day. The first two Kasparov Chess Scholars, plus all the Oakham Chess Scholars received 4 hours of instructive and entertaining coaching. Garry also presented all the youngsters with autographed copies of one of his books.
