Viswanathan Anand added a fourth world- level title to his collection this year as he rebounded strongly from a first-game loss to beat veteran Anatoly Karpov of Russia 4-2, in the final of the sixth edition of the Corsica Open chess tournament played in Bastia, France. Over the last three months Anand has won the Eurotel title in Prague in May, followed by the Chess Classic of Mainz title in July, the World Cup in Hyderabad in October and now the Corsica Open. In the final against Karpov, another former FIDE World champion like Anand, the Indian lost the first game but bounced back to win the next with white pieces and send the match into a play-off. They drew the next two before Anand won the last two games played in the blitz format. This was the first match in the knockout stage where Anand had been stretched beyond the normal two-game match. In what turned out to be a thrilling days event, the finals proved every bit an entertainer with both the finalists matching each other in rapid and blitz chess. But Anand showed that he had greater desire to win the Euro 20000 top prize, as he dug in deep to equalise 1-1 after a first game defeat. Two rapid draws later, Anand struck deadly in the fifth game with black pieces and finished with a final salvo mating Karpov in the sixth game.

Anatoly Karpov, UNICEF Regional Ambassador for CEE/CIS, who is crusading against iodine deficiency Mention the name Anatoly Karpov and one word pops into mind: chess. These days, though, the former world chess supremo is championing a very different cause: iodized salt. While people in rich countries may take this subject with, well, a pinch of salt, the lack of iodized salt is a key health problem in many regions of the world, including in Karpov's own country, Russia. "I am very pleased to be involved in this issue, " said Karpov, who is UNICEF’s Regional Ambassador for Central and Eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Baltic states. "We have clear aims and there are clear ways to solve the problem. We're in the process of achieving universal salt iodization," he told the Online Magazine. Lack of iodine in the diet leads to iodine deficiency disorder, a serious condition, particularly for pregant women and children (see Fast facts). Hence the importance of eliminating IDD, which can be done, quite simply, by having everyone eat iodized salt.

Anatoli Yevgenyevic Karpov
Grandmaster
Karpov was born in Zlatoust in the former Soviet Union and learned to play chess at the age of 4. At age 12 he was accepted into Mikhail Botvinnik's super-prestigious chess school. He became the youngest Soviet National Master in history at 15, and won in his first international chess tournament several months later. In 1967 he took 5th in the Soviet Junior Chess Championship and won the European Junior Chess Championship several months later. But his career really took off in 1969 when he became the first Soviet player since Boris Spassky (1955) to win the World Junior Chess Championship with a score of 10 out of 11. Soon afterwards he tied for 4th place at an international tournamnent in Caracas, Venezuela and became the world's youngest Grandmaster.
Candidate
The 1970's showed a major improvement in his game. His Elo rating shot up from 2540 in 1971 to 2660 in 1973, when he came in 2nd in the USSR Chess Championship and placed first in the Leningrad Interzonal Tournament. The latter qualified him for the 1974 Candidates cycle, which determined who was allowed challenge the reigning World Champion, Bobby Fischer.
Karpov beat Lev Polugaevsky in the first Candidates match to face former World Champion Boris Spassky in the next round. Karpov was on record saying that he believed Spassky would easily beat him and win the Candidates cycle to face Fischer, and that he (Karpov) would win the following Candidates cycle in 1977.

    The Karpov-Fischer Hoax
Last night (EST), I presented a pair of games on my weekly ChessBase show purporting to have been played by Anatoly Karpov and Bobby Fischer. Indeed, they were played by those two men – just not against each other (although they could have been – see below). Of course, it was an (early) April Fools’ gag. Last year I paid homage to the day as well, though without a gag, so this year I decided to take things up a notch. Unfortunately, my show didn’t fall on April 1, but I did offer a hint in my blurb (see here and here ), referring to the program as the show for the week of March 28 to April 3. Naturally, I did the best I could to present an incredibly implausible story (Karpov and Fischer played some serious though informal games nearly 30 years ago, and no one even knew about it?) in a plausible guise, with reasonable success. Nevertheless, I hasten to assure you, that while the background story was essentially true (Torre did come to Las Vegas to give a simul, stayed with Filipino friends, I was told later that Fischer had been in the van, and Fischer and Karpov did meet in the Philippines in the mid-to-late 70s to discuss an unofficial world championship match), the two never played – or at least if they did, I have no knowledge of this.

      The Players (listed alphabetically)
      Gata Kamsky, Challenger
      • Gata Kamsky, USA, 2735, 22 years old Kamsky has had an astonishing career. Since defecting from Russia at the age of 14, he has avoided Junior events, and competed directly with adults. He and Anand were the only two players to achieve the quarter finals or higher in BOTH the PCA and FIDE World Championship cycles last year. Kamsky defeated Anand in the FIDE event, and is now the challenger in the FIDE match. Kamsky lost to Anand during the PCA semi-finals in Spain last year. Kamsky has filed official grievances regarding his FIDE rating, which he feels has not accurately taken into account his PCA events, and should be higher. Still very young, still improving rapidly, and still developing an individual style, Kamsky, is one of the brightest stars in chess today.

Pyotr Svidler from Russia and Frenchman Joel Lotier, who scored six points, became the favourites of the tournament but the Russian won top honours due to the coefficient of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
