Chess is not just a mentally challenging game to play. It is also a game that generates examples and analogies relevant to a broad range of intellectual concerns. If you do a search for "chess" here at TCS, you will find, among other things, Arnold Kling's discussion of man-versus-machine chess, Lee Harris's illustration in chess terms of the difference between rational and irrational enemies , Iain Murray's likening of Russian global-warming policy to a knight's move, and a piece by me noting philosopher Daniel Dennett's evocation of chess computers in his argument for the compatibility of free will and determinism. I am a competent chess player (unlike Kling, that is), albeit no threat to the world's grandmasters. After falling off in participation for a few years, I have recently played frequently perhaps a bit too frequently aided by the ready availability of opponents at chess websites like

Finding Bobby Fischer The baffling moves of a chess genius
BY WAYNE COFFEY
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Chess champion Bobby Fischer today (above) looks a long way removed... ... from the young man who set the chess world ablaze in the early 1970s (above) or the young boy (below) who mastered the game while growing up in Brooklyn. Members of the RJF Committee who worked to help Fischer get Icelandic citizenship (from l.) Einar Einarsson, chess grandmaster Helgi Olafsson, Dr. Magnus Skulason (standing), Gardar Sverrisson and Gudmundur Thorarinsson. REYKJAVIK, Iceland — Late Thursday night, beneath a soft rain that came in off the Atlantic, Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn walked off a small white jet, stepped onto the wet tarmac and officially arrived in his new homeland. He had a thick white beard and a tangle of hair and baggy blue jeans hanging on his 6-2 frame. Thirty-three years earlier in this charming seaside city, the world's northernmost capital, Bobby Fischer had become the first American world champion of chess in more than a century. He defeated Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in an event that was covered as if it were a Super Bowl, and he was almost universally hailed as the greatest chess player ever. Now Fischer was back for the first time, and seeing him there on the tarmac, a few minutes after 11 p.m., the rush of history was as palpable as the wind. You knew you weren't looking at the Babe Ruth and Beethoven of the 64-square set anymore, or a Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated cover boy, or even a U.S.citizen.

The Hounding of a Chess Legend
by Richard Wall
by Richard Wall
"Chess demands total concentration and a love for the game" ~ Bobby Fischer 1. The Mortal Danger of Being a Chess Prodigy On May 17, 1998 the final episode in the Fifth Season of the X-Files TV series was first broadcast in America. It is entitled " The End ," and begins with a chess match taking place before a large audience, between a young American boy and an older, Russian grandmaster. As the match progresses, the viewer is made aware of a sniper taking up position in a gallery overlooking the vast auditorium. The child player, who is gifted with extra-sensory perception and the ability to read others’ thoughts as they occur, becomes restless as he senses something threatening in the air. Tension rises as the sniper prepares to take aim, and the game is reaching its climax. The sniper fires. At this crucial moment the boy, having made his final move and check-mated his opponent, moves slightly down and backwards, and the shot which was intended for him kills the Russian grandmaster instead. Double check-mate! Later, it emerges that the gifted child possesses his psychic powers as a result of a top-secret biological implant in his head, of alien origin. The evil conspiratorial elite which runs world affairs wants to see him dead because the abilities they have given him have turned out to be no longer required, or perhaps too much of a threat to their own sinister plans.

BOBBY FISCHER: THE LYNCHING OF THE RETURNING HERO
by Murray N. Rothbard
October 1992
by Murray N. Rothbard
Twenty years ago, Bobby Fischer was the hero of the American media. A remarkable chess prodigy and genius, Bobby surmounted a concerted attempt by the dominant Soviet grandmasters to keep him out of the world championship. His defeat of then champion, Soviet grandmaster Boris Spassky, at the match at Rejkjavik was the toast of the world; here was the first American chess player to become the best in the world. Fischer's victory revivified chess in the U.S. and across the globe, and succeeded in making tourneys a big business. Bobby was an eccentric, but many geniuses are eccentric, and virtually every top chess player shares that quality. As in the case of many geniuses, Bobby made many demands of officials around him, in his case tournament directors; from a distance, the demands seemed picky and a little batty. His demands not being met, Bobby retired from world chess, and has not played in public for seventeen years. Now, lured by a multi-million dollar gate guaranteed by a Yugoslav businessman, Bobby, still maintaining that he is undefeated world champion, agreed to play his old rival Spassky, the first ten-game winner to be declared the victor.

Iceland's love for chess behind the campaign to save the volatile and irascible American

By Mari Manninen in Reykjavik Every Icelander I interviewed said that this may be hard to understand outside of Iceland. Not everyone in Iceland understands it, either. The question is, why did Iceland grant citizenship to the volatile Bobby Fischer - famed these days as much for his bizarre anti-US and anti-Israel rants as for his awesome chess prowess - a man whom the United States would have liked to put on trial? By virtue of the citizenship approval, the former chess world champion was released from a Japanese prison in late March and allowed to travel to Iceland. The authorities had nabbed Fischer because he was allegedly travelling with a void passport. The citizenship granted by Iceland saved Fischer from being extradited to his native country, the United States. He has been charged there for violating sanctions against the former Yugoslavia. In 1992, Fischer played an exhibition chess match against
