Fischer Random Chess - News
Bobby Fischer, (the former world champion chess), proposed a variant of chess, where the game is played from a randomly generated setup. Here, you will find a collection of news items on the game.
Grandmaster Leko on Fischer Random Chess
In an interview in Schaakmagazine , the magazine of the Dutch chess federation (KNSB - Koninklijke Nederlandse Schaak Bond), in February 2000, Peter Leko from Hungary mentioned Fischer Random Chess. Grandmaster Leko is currently having the sixth highest ELO-rating (i.e., he is considered to be the sixth' best chess player in the world), at an age of 20. In the interview, he is asked what Fischer (a friend of Leko) thinks of his level of chess. Leko answers: (the text below is a translation of the text, as it appeared in Dutch in the journal. I.e., Leko's literal words probably have been different.) That is private, that is between us. But he does not believe anymore in the classic chess game, he thinks his random chess is the chess of the future. That form of chess is interesting and I would like to see tournaments with random chess been origined. Just from curiosity who would be the strong players in random chess. I already played such a tournament once. You cannot prepare yourself at all, you must use your imagination. It can go totally wrong from at the beginning.

TOKYO, Japan (CNN) Former world chess champion Bobby Fischer has been detained by immigration authorities in Japan. Fischer, 61, is wanted in the United States for attending a 1992 chess match in Yugoslavia in violation of international sanctions imposed during the Balkan wars. He was stopped at Tokyo's Narita International Airport on Tuesday in connection with Japanese immigration officials told CNN. Friday's Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported that officials were preparing to deport Fischer to the United States. The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said it was aware Fischer had been detained but declined to comment further. Fischer became a chess grandmaster at age 15 and was considered something of a Cold War hero when he outplayed Russian Boris Spassky to win the world title in 1972.

Applauds 911 Attacks
By David Bamber and Chris Hastings
The Telegraph - London
Bobby Fischer, the reclusive American chess grandmaster, has broken years of silence to support the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.
The Telegraph has discovered that Mr Fischer gave an interview to an obscure radio station in the Philippines hours after the events on September 11.
Mr Fischer is already wanted for questioning by the FBI for breaking UN sanctions by taking part in a chess match in Serbia against Boris Spassky in 1992 - his first for 20 years.
In his interview on September 11 with Radio Bombo in Baguio City, Mr Fischer said: "This is all wonderful news. It is time to finish off the US once and for all.
"I was happy and could not believe what was happening. All the crimes the US has committed in the world. This just shows, what goes around comes around, even to the US.
"I applaud the act. The US and Israel have been slaughtering the Palestinians for years. Now it is coming back at the US."
Mr Fischer, 58, also attacked Israel and "Jews" who he claimed were responsible for "bringing" the attack on the World Trade Centre. He gave the interview because he is a friend of Pablo Mercado, the station manager. They met through their mutual friend Eugene Torre, the Filipino chess grandmaster.

March 9 ~  Making Good Moves Logical Chess: Move by Move
"I don't believe in p s y c h o l o g y I believe in good moves." ~ Bobby Fischer Eccentric, but definitely someone with good moves, American chess master Robert James Fischer (1943-) was born on this day in Chicago, Illinois. He learned chess at six, then became the youngest ranking grand master at the mere age of 15. In 1972, Fischer was the first American to win the World Chess Championship, beating the then-Soviet Union champion, Boris Spassky. In a historic event that lasted two months, Fischer lost the first game , protested the presence of cameras, and forfeited the second game. In the next four games, with confidence , astonishing moves, aggressive tactics, and brilliant combinations, he beat Spassky. At one point, Soviet security dismantled Fischer's chair to look for information-feeding electronic devices. Fischer's victory made him a legend and breathed life into the game of chess. "I like the moment when I break a man's ego," said Fischer who resigned his title in 1975 after demanding a number of strict conditions for a match against Anatoly Karpov. The game of chess was introduced in India in the year 531.

Bobby Fischer News contains on update on Bobby Fischer's release from detention in Japan. Robert James Fischer was born on 9 March 1943 in Chicago. Bobby Fischer started playing chess at 6, and from a very young age he attended the Brooklyn Chess Club and was coached by Carmine Nigro, the club's president. Fischer was so preoccupied by chess that his mother, Regina, took him to the Children's Psychiatric Division of the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital; but the doctor there, Harold Kline told Mrs Fischer he thought there were worse preoccupations and Bobby Fischer's zest for the game continued unabated. In 1955 Fischer joined the Manhattan Chess Club and then the Hawthorne Chess Club where he was mentored by Jack Collins. In July 1956 Bobby Fischer won the US junior championship - the youngest player to do so. At 14 years and 9 months Fischer became US Champion, a title he was to gain eight times. As his playing continued to thrive so did his personal life grow more difficult. He fell out with his mother and his disagreements with tournament organisers were escalating.

Bobby Fischer Goes to War by David Edmonds and John Eidinow
Today it seems unlikely that one chess tournament could hold the world in thrall, but in 1972, Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky battled it out for the title of world champion under the scrutiny of everyone from the audience of the nightly news to foreign governments to Henry Kissinger. In "Bobby Fischer Goes to War," David Edmonds and John Eidinow reset the stage and give a full account of everything that was at stake in this series of chess matches. Called "the High Noon of chess, the 1972 tournament was the first real chance America had at winning a world championship in decades. The Soviets had held the title since World War II, and returning champion Spassky was considered at the top of his game. But Fischer was different than any other chess player. Not only a chess genius, he conducted psychological warfare at the chessboard. "The most interesting phenomenon about Fischer," they write, "is not the effect chess had on him, but the effect his chess had on his opponents, destroying their morale, making them feel that they were in the grip of an alien hostile force to whose powers there was no earthly answer." And whether intentionally or not, Fischer's infamous histrionics contributed to his opponents' breakdowns. He never arrived on time, he refused to play unless the chessboard, the lighting, the noise level, the audience met with his approval. Fischer was the celebrity, and the heads of the tournaments almost always bent to his will.

How we work: Bobby Fischer, chess player
In 1972, chess grand master Bobby Fischer specifically requested the Eames executive chair while he competed in the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland. He said he could concentrate well in the chair. When opponent Boris Spaasky [sic] saw it, he refused to play until he got one, too. Fisher's Reykjavik games against Spassky were famously likened to a Mozart Symphony by Miguel Najdorf, a description echoed by Nigel Short , who claimed in 2001 to have played several speed games online against the reclusive Fischer. Fischer has recently become a citizen of Iceland See also: the story of the Eames chaise, designed for Billy Wilder . (And more good "design stories" at the Herman Miller website.) Mar. 9, 1943- Chess player. In the autumn of 1992, the international grand master of chess BobbyFischer emerged from two decades of self-imposed obscurity to play a remarkable exhibition match against his old rival Boris Spassky. Fischer, who had defeated Spassky in the famous 1972 World Championship held in Reykjavik, Iceland, only to be stripped of the title three years later after refusing to defend it, won the 1992 encounter handily. His dramatic return to competition was just the latest episode in a career marked by a string of impressive victories. An eight-time United States champion, he is the only American to win a world championship in recent memory, and, until 1992, he held the record for being the youngest person to become an international grand master. Some observers have suggested that Fischer, in bringing to chess an impressive mastery of technique and combinative brilliance, created a whole new climate of appreciation for the game in the United States."It was Bobby Fischer who had, singlehandedly, made the world recognize that chess on its highest level was as competitive as football, as thrilling as a duel to the death, as aesthetically satisfying as a fine work of art, as intellectually demanding as any form of human activity," Harold C. Schonberg wrote in Grandmasters of Chess (1973). "If for no other reason, Bobby Fischer was and would be the greatest chess champion who ever lived."
