Executive summary: Loony chess grand master Fischer's parents divorced when he was a toddler. He was raised by his mother in Brooklyn, and taught himself to play chess by simply reading the instructions that accompanied a cheap chess set. It was immediately apparent that young Fischer was a prodigy. From the beginning of his competitive chess play, Fischer was always a tad eccentric. He was known for making odd complaints at tournaments, about anything from the lighting to the clocks to the amount of prize money. As Fischer's rank and reputation among masters climbed, his demands became progressively odder. Fischer won the U.S. Junior Championship in 1956, and became U.S. Champion in 1958. After 20 consecutive tournament victories (still the longest winning streak in FIDE history) he became world champion in 1972, defeating Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland. When he won the title

Ex-Chess Champion Bobby Fischer Detained
Fugitive Held in Japan on Charges Stemming From '92 Spassky Match in Yugoslavia
By Allan Lengel Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, July 16, 2004; Page A04 The hunt for Bobby Fischer, the unpredictable chess legend, ended this week when he was detained in Japan, where he awaits possible deportation on charges that he attended a 1992 match in Yugoslavia in violation of a U.S. ban. The Japanese Immigration Bureau detained the 61-year-old Fischer on Tuesday at Narita International Airport in Tokyo at the urging of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which had recently stepped up efforts to track the fugitive, U.S. authorities said yesterday.
Bobby Fischer, shown in a 1996 photo, awaits deportation in Japan.

Friday, July 30, 2004; Page A11 TOKYO, July 29 Chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer has been detained in an airport jail for about two weeks, facing deportation from Japan to the United States. But after 12 years of dodging U.S. law enforcement since playing a 1992 match in Yugoslavia in defiance of international sanctions, Fischer, 61, has devised a strategy for his next move, a spokesman said Thursday. Fischer, a U.S. citizen who has broadcast anti-American and anti-Jewish rants during his exile, might now seek German citizenship to avoid extradition to the United States for trial, his representatives in Tokyo said Thursday. Fischer's father was believed to have been born in Germany, and Fischer's mother was Jewish. "He may have lost his queen . . . but this is not checkmate yet," said John Bosnitch, a Tokyo-based media representative now advising Fischer.

48. The Chess Of Bobby Fischer
play better chess by studying bobby fischer s games and his life.
http://www.chessmaniac.com/Bobby_Fischer/Bobby_Fischer_Articles3.shtm
The Chess of Bobby Fischer
Fischer's games are so full of ideas, from opening adventures to the themes of composed endings, that they are in themselves the best introduction to the pleasures of the game. In the arduous path to chess mastery, enjoyment is the surest driving force. In the words of Bobby Fischer, "You can get good only if you love the game." So much has been written about Fischer as a personality that the general public, including the chess fraternity, has been blinded to his chess. His games have been analyzed over and over in the chess journals. He has published three books himself, with varying degrees of help from other authors. Yet his winning methods, his unique contributions to the larger body of chess knowledge, and his rightful place in the history of the game have been overshadowed by all the publicity. A study of Fischer's 750 known clock games shows that he has no "chess secrets." He is alert and accurate. He takes each game seriously, even when the outcome may not have any effect on his tournament standing. He is persistent and not easily discouraged. Such qualities are more a matter of character than of talent. In this sense his real strength is as a man, not as a player. How different is the image which the press has seized upon in its search for the "angle" on the man! Fischer must be considered the most successful player the game has ever known. He has lost about 10 percent of his games and drawn about 30 percent, for a batting average of .750. It is true that Capablanca lost only thirty-five games out of the seven hundred he played in a thirty- year career. But Fischer has never been willing to concede the restful draw, or to play to the score. And his competition over the twenty-year career he has now enjoyed has been intense.

The Japanese government is preparing to deport chess legend Bobby Fischer for staying in this country on an invalid passport, immigration officials said Tuesday.
Fischer was detained at the international airport in this city just outside of Tokyo last Tuesday after trying to board a flight for Manila, Philippines.
Immigration officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Fischer, 61, has been held in their custody since, and said he is being processed for deportation. They refused to give further details, but said he could appeal their decision.
They said they did not know how long the deportation process would take.

It isn't long before Josh is able to beat them all. His father, looking to take him to the next level, employs ex-chess master Bruce Pandolfini (Ben Kingsley) as a teacher. Under Pandolfini, Josh matures as a player, and, for the first time, he starts to fear losing. Bobby Fischer is back in Iceland, and that is as it should be. Fischer put Iceland on the map for the first time since the Vikings happened by. And Iceland put Fischer on the map, providing the venue for his greatest triumph, the 1972 world chess championship. That was before he fell off a psychic cliff. Three decades later, the fugitive ex-champion, sought by U.S. authorities for violating U.N. sanctions on Yugoslavia (in 1992 he played a high-profile rematch with Boris Spassky in Belgrade), is whisked out of a Japanese jail where he was awaiting extradition and offered shelter in Reykjavík. No one is too upset about this arrangement because he's clearly a sick man. His insane rants about Jews and America, his choice of a squalid, furtive life by a man who could have lived in princely admiration, his paranoiahe had the fillings in his teeth removed because if "somebody took a filling out and put in an electronic device, he could influence your thinking"evoke pity and puzzlement. Fischer is the poster boy for the mad chess genius, a species with a pedigree going back at least to Paul Morphy, who after his triumphal 1858-59 tour of Europe returned to the U.S., abruptly quit the game and is said to have wandered the streets of New Orleans talking to himself. Others have verged more on the edge of eccentricity. The great Wilhelm Steinitz claimed to have played against God, given him an extra pawn and won. Neither player left a record of the game.

BOBBY FISCHER SPEAKS OUT!
"Fischer does not merely outplay opponents; he leaves them bodily and mentally glutted.... Fisher himself speaks of the exultant instant in which he feels the 'ego of the other player crumbling.' "
-George Steiner, Fields of Force "Fischer is... the strongest player in the world. In fact, the strongest player who ever lived."
-Larry Evans, U.S. International Grandmaster
Bobby Fischer is the undisputed "psych-out" champion in the world of chess. On this cerebral battlefield, he has crushed many an ego with his ferocious, relentless attack coupled with his steely-cold logic and near perfect strategy. Bobby was born in Chicago on May 9, 1943, but grew up in Brooklyn, New York. On his sixth birthday, he received a gift of destiny from his sister Joan-a chess set. Since that time, little else interested Bobby, who played chess for hours every day. Consequently, his knowledge and skill grew enormously. In 1956 he won the junior chess championship of the United States at the age of thirteen. The next year he won the prestigious U.S. championship. He continued his meteoric rise, and in 1958, he placed fifth in the interzonal tournament at Portoroz, Yugoslavia, thus qualifying at fifteen years of age as the youngest International Grandmaster ever.
