The world's greatest Chess player Robert James Fischer was born in Chicago, Illinois at the Michael Reese Hospital by the banks of Lake Michigan on March 9th, 1943. His father Gerhardth Fischer was born in Berlin, Germany in 1909, he was a biophysicist. His mother was Regina Wender. They separated when Bobby was 2 years old, and Regina had custody of Bobby and his older sister Joan who was then 7 years old. She was a qualified registered Nurse and wanted to take a Master's Degree at New York University in Nursing Education. She decided to move to Brooklyn. It is there that the legend of the world's greatest Chess player begins. On May 1949, Bobby and his sister Joan learned how to play the game with a Chess set given to them as a present. Both, six and eleven, learned the moves from the instructions that went with the set. Even as a six-year-old, Bobby became increasingly fascinated with Chess and enjoyed enough success in solving its complexities. By age seven, he was so thoroughly absorbed that his mother became worried. "Bobby isn't interested in anybody unless they play Chess and there just aren't many children who like it" she once said.
She also attempted to place an ad in the Brooklyn Eagle inquiring whether there might be other children of Bobby's age who would come and play Chess with him. On January 17, 1951 Bobby played a game against master Max Pavey who was giving a simultaneous exhibition and Bobby lost in 15 minutes. A few weeks later Bobby joined the Brooklyn Chess Club, headed by Mr. Carmine Nigro, President of the Brooklyn Chess Club and for the next few years he rarely missed a Friday evening.

Why would I want to reinstate Fischer?
I have received the following question from a reader of my web site: At 07:32 AM 3/31/99 -0500, Howard Goldowsky ( howard.goldowsky@analog.com ) wrote: "Why would you want to reinstate Fischer, someone who is a self-proclaimed US law breaker? Aren't there plenty of other good chess players in the US who are infinitely more charismatic than Fischer, who with the help of some creativity, can promote chess?
Bobby Fischer
"Feel free to copy any of this onto the net - perhaps you feel others would be interested in these comments. "Thanks "Howard Goldowsky" My answer was: I have studied the law in great detail and his playing a chess match with Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia in 1992 broke no law. If that match did break the law, then all of the officers of the United States Chess Federation need to go to jail because the USCF purchased more than $500,000 worth of chess books from Yugoslavia during that time period (after receiving an "opinion of counsel" that it was all right to do so). As far as I know, Bobby Fischer is the only person ever to have been criminally charged with violating sanctions against Yugoslavia on the basis of an "Executive Order" by President George Bush. The charges against Fischer are obviously absurd and ridiculous and without basis in law.

Mr Fischer has been granted Icelandic citizenship, avoiding deportation to his native United States. He is wanted in the US for breaking international sanctions by playing a match in Yugoslavia in 1992. The 62-year-old chess legend was detained in July trying to leave Japan using a revoked US passport. After his release on Thursday he flew from Tokyo to Denmark on a scheduled flight. He then boarded a private plane chartered by Icelandic television. Controversial Before leaving Japan, he told reporters that his arrest last year had been a "kidnapping cooked up by Bush and Koizumi" - referring to US President George W Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

BBC News
Bobby Fischer's paranoia, obsessive behaviour and outrageous public statements have all but overshadowed his undoubted brilliance as a grandmaster.
In his heyday, Bobby Fischer was an American icon The man who once said that "all I want to do, ever, is play chess" has played precious little of it at international level since he won the world championship in Reykjavik in 1972. His remarkable defeat of Boris Spassky in the "chess match of the century" should have cemented his position at the very summit of the game, after a run of 20 consecutive tournament victories that is still hailed as the longest winning streak in world chess. The achievement certainly won him some lasting affection in Iceland, where a grateful government has now granted him citizenship in recognition of the international attention that he drew to the country. But instead of capitalising on his win, Fischer withdrew from competition. Three years later, the World Chess Federation stripped him of his title for failing to defend it against Anatoly Karpov.

World Chess Championship
1972 Fischer - Spassky Title Match
Highlights
For the first time since 1948, a chess player from outside the Soviet Union had achieved the right to play a match for the World Chess Championship title. The opening ceremony in Reykjavik was scheduled for 1 July 1972, but on that day Robert Fischer was not in Iceland. Fischer, who had not signed any document confirming his participation, was demanding an increase in the 125.000 US$ prize fund, as well as restrictions on television cameras. "The Match" by Robert Byrne, Chess Life September 1972 Will There Be a Match? The match of the century was supposed to have started Sunday, July 2, but it did not. Fischer had failed to show up in Reykjavik after two abortive attempts to board Loftleidir flights earlier in the week. Both times, press photographers had driven the camera-shy challenger back to New York City following brief appearances at Kennedy airport. Then Bobby announced he was holding out for 30% of the gate receipts for both himself and Spassky. The Icelanders could not agree, since they had earmarked that anticipated income for expenses connected with the staging of the match.

1992 Fischer - Spassky Rematch
Highlights
"Fischer is back! It's an event we have all eagerly awaited for 20 years..." After disappearing from public view for 20 years, Robert James Fischer returned to play a chess match with Boris Spassky in 1992. At the time of the return match, Fischer was 49 years old. Spassky was 55, was ranked 101st in the world, and had a rating of 2560. They came to the town of Sveti Stefan, a resort off the coast of Montenegro, 110 km from the civil war in Bosnia, 200 km from besieged Sarajevo. Fischer played despite United Nations sanctions against Yugoslavia and a warning from the United States Treasury Department, which threatened him with severe penalties for playing. The prize fund was 5.000.000 US$, of which the first player to win 10 games would receive 3.650.000 US$. In the event of a 9-9 tie, Fischer would keep his title as "undefeated champion of the world". There would be no adjournments. The match sponsor was Jezdimir Vasiljevic, President of Jugoskandic Bank, and a crony of Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic. The match arbiter was Lothar Schmid, who had performed the same function 20 years earlier in Iceland. Eugenio Torre, GM from the Philippines, served as Fischer's second, while Spassky had Borislav Ivkov as his second.
A memorable press conference
On 1 September 1992, Fischer gave his first press conference in 20 years. When asked about his reaction to the threats by Washington, Fischer took out a letter from the Treasury Department and spat on it.

Chess is life. All I want to do, ever, is just play chess. I don't believe in psychology. I believe in good moves. All that matters on the chessboard is good moves. You can only get good at chess if you love the game. Chess demands total concentration and a love for the game. I give 98 percent of my mental energy to chess. Others give only 2 percent. Your body has to be in top condition. Your chess deteriorates as your body does. You can't separate body from mind. I prepare myself well. I know what I can do before I go in. I'm always confident. Psychologically, you have to have confidence in yourself and this confidence should be based on fact. People have been playing against me below their strength for fifteen years. Chess is war over the board. The object is to crush the opponent's mind. Chess is like war on a board. I play honestly and I play to win. If I lose, I take my medicine. You have to have the fighting spirit. You have to force moves and take chances.

By Kevin Poulsen Also by this reporter 02:00 AM Jul. 19, 2005 PT Two dozen programmers from around the world have signed up to compete in Germany next month in the first computer chess tournament devoted to Chess960, a game variant invented by fugitive chess genius Bobby Fischer that's slowly gaining rank among grandmasters. The rules of Chess960 are mostly the same as orthodox chess but the setup incorporates something once considered anathema to the game: chance. Pawns begin where they always do. However, the pieces behind them on the white side are arranged at random, with the proviso that bishops must end up on opposite colors, and the king dwell somewhere between the two rooks. The black pieces are lined up to mirror the white.

http://www.excaliburelectronics.com/bio_fischer.html
Bobby Fischer Robert James (Bobby) Fischer (1943 - ) is universally considered to have been one of the best players in the history of chess. Many feel that he was the best ever. At his peak, he dominated even his closest challengers by overwhelming scores. When he won the world championship in 1972, he set records for performance that may never be equalled. Fischer was one of the two charter members of the US Chess Hall of Fame, sharing that honor with 19th-century great Paul Morphy. The two have much in common. Both were American-born, and both dominated the chess world with no close rivals at their peaks. Sadly, however, both retired from serious competition when they were at their strongest, although Fischer came out of retirement briefly to play one match. Bobby Fischer was born on March 9, 1943, in Chicago. He was raised by his mother and older sister, both highly intelligent people. The family had settled in Brooklyn by the time Fischer was six years old. About that time, his sister bought little Bobby a chess set to keep him amused. He soon became totally absorbed with chess. By the age of 14, Bobby Fischer won the US Championship, becoming by far the youngest player ever to win that title. At 15, he became the youngest international grandmaster in history. Although that record has since been surpassed, it must be remembered that winning the grandmaster title in Fischer's day was a rarer achievement than it is today.
