He learned chess at the age of four by watching his father play and in 1901, at the age of 12, he beat Juan Corzo, the Cuban champion. Capablanca was regarded as the most naturally talented chess player anyone had ever seen. He was educated in America, studied engineering at Columbia University and spent much of his free time playing masters at the Manhattan Chess Club in New York City, where he achieved a sensational win in a match against US Champion Frank Marshall crushing him by 8 wins to 1 with 14 draws in 1909 when he was 20 years old. Frank Marshall had unsuccessfully played Lasker in a World Championship match only two years earlier.

3. lara Bit of an enigma Written by Rs1026 on March 25, 2005 Anoop, I do not know a whole lot about chess so I need to be careful with what i say here. I think one of the reasons the response to Kasparov's retirement has been not as eulogic as one may have expected, is that he was not the most popular player around - not amongst the chess-playing community, not amongst the chess-following community. In chess, a person's ranking can be severely affected if he loses to a player ranked lower than him. It is often said that Kasparov was very protective about his ranking and declined to play many tournaments purely to avoid weakening his ranking.

UPDATE: Kasparov wins first World Rapid final
Cannes, France
- Garry Kasparov continued his campaign to keep his number one status, even if he doesn't have a world title to his name. He won Sunday's final over Evgeny Bareev, and got a bit more 'compensation' for Bareev's efforts as Vladimir Kramnik's second in last year's BGN title match.

UPDATE: Topalov rejoins champs
Monte Carlo, Monaco
- Veselin Topalov reemerged at the top of this blindfold and rapid chess extravaganza, with a sweep of ex-world champion Anatoly Karpov, a trick the pair of world champions could not match.
They did manage a steady win apiece though, which was enough to prevent Topalov from sprinting into clear first. Kramnik, Anand and Topalov lead with 11/16, two points ahead of Leko who is alone in fourth place.

Tense draws
Monte Carlo, Monaco
- It didn't look like much happened as leaders Kramnik and and Topalov drew both of their games, against Leko and Ljubojevic respectively, but there was plenty of drama in the moves.
The result was enough to leave them alone at the top for the combined prize as they had gone into the final round with a healthy lead over third-place Vishwanathan Anand. Topalov won the blindfold event and Kramnik split the rapid honors with Boris Gelfand.
But Kramnik was near total victory as he worked Leko over on the ropes, while Topalov made a horrible blunder in the last round that seemed to spoil a brilliant event ...

Dramatic finish
Warsaw, Poland
- GM Robert Kempinsky has been awarded the title of Polish champion
Apparently this second tie was enough, and the crown seems to have been bestowed on some kind of normal tie-break system that had Kempinsky in front to begin with - there was a preliminary announcement that he had been named champion

    Anand wins fourth Chess Oscar
Vishwanathan Anand has become the first non-Russian to win the coveted Chess Oscar for the fourth time. The Indian ace was voted as the winner by a huge margin by the Chess community in the poll conducted by the Russian chess magazine '64'. This is the third straight year Anand has been elected winner of the Award and is the fourth time overall after previous wins in 1997, 1998 and 2003. Anand said, "It is always an honour to be acknowledged for your performance. In Chess winning an Oscar means the pundits have acclaimed your success. In 2004 I played the best and I silenced the classical chess critics by also winning all the classical events I played in. Chess has historically been seen as a Russian game and I think as an Indian to win the award four times over it is indeed an awesome feeling." This year 445 chess specialists people from 75 countries voted for the winner. Anand figured on every list, and was voted the first among 279 contenders. Last year Anand had received 232 firsts.

'I am aiming for 2800 Elo points'

C hess wizard Vishwanathan Anand is one of the greats of the game. In the last two years, he has won almost everything that has come his way, including his third Chess Oscar, which he had earlier won in 1997 and 1998. In doing so, he became only the second non-Russian after Bobby Fischer of the United States (in 1970, 1971 and 1972) to win the coveted award. This year he already has three major crowns resting on his head the Corus Super Grandmaster's title, the Dortmund Super Grandmaster's title and the Mainz Classic and beaten all the leading players in the process. Anand, who picked his early lessons in chess at the age of six from his mother Susheela, now has his sights firmly set on the upcoming Chess Olympiad in Calvia, Spain, where he will spearhead India's challenge. The 34-year-old chess ace and wife Aruna now live in the little town of Collado Mediano in Madrid, Spain. It is no surprise that Anand, who is fluent in Spanish, is a huge fan of Real Madrid, arguably, the world's premier football club. "I like Zinedine Zidane and Roberto Carlos. I hope Zidane leads Real Madrid to glory this season and they win all the trophies," he says.

'Chess as a sport is getting younger'
    December 26, 2003
I t is a festive afternoon at Mumbai's Sydenham College. Chess wizard Vishwanathan Anand, on a promotional visit for NIIT to support World Computer Literacy Day, is playing 23 young college champions simultaneously. Nothing extraordinary for the Grand Master, except that the competitor in him wakes up at the sight of a chessboard. Gone is the smile from his face. The competitive edge surfaces as he makes a move and instantly looks up at his opponent. "You can get some information about your opponent's mood; to check how happy or confident the player is, whether he is bluffing. You can read quite a lot," explains Anand. The function over, I travel with the Chennai-born genius down in his car along Mumbai's most famous promenade, the Marine Drive, as the vivid orange sunset lights up the sky. The year 2003 has done the same for Anand's career. He won six of the nine events he entered and has been nominated for the year's chess Oscar, the highest award in the game, which will be announced in February 2004. "This year has been up there," agrees Anand. "Last year was one of the best, but this year has been better. I'm doing more good years than bad. Since 1997 to 2003, all the years have been exceptionally good."

Theme : India, First in Asia - Chess Vishwanathan Anand won the World Junior Chess Championship in 1987, the first Asian to win the world junior title. In 1995, he challenged Gary Kasparov in New York for the world title, the first Asian to be in a world championship game. The pinnacle of Anand's career was achieved on December 24, 2000, when Anand became the 15th FIDE World Chess Champion in Teheran. Anand became the first Asian to win the world chess title, thus ending decades of Soviet domination in the ancient Indian game of kings. Anand is the single biggest reason for the chess revolution in India. In the late 1980s, India had less than 90 players with an international rating. However, by 1998, 370 out of the 20,000 players ranked worldwide were from India, which had displaced China (with 75 players in the list) as Asia's leading chess-playing country. 1994 Hiroshima Asiad Hockey Dates : October 2 - October 16, 1994

SYNONYMOUS WITH CHESS Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand It's all about fan following. Especially when he spends most of the year in Europe and chooses to come to Chennai in scorching June. Grandmaster Anand, as they kept calling him, was in the city for the World School Chess Championship. Looking around the Hall of Chess in Nehru Stadium, I find Vishwanathan Anand standing in a corner, wiping his brow. Uniformed kids walk about the place, not paying too much attention to the World Chess Champion. As I introduce myself to him, and ask if he could spare a few minutes, he does a double take. "Are you sure?" he asks, as if this was a first. Vishy had begun playing chess at six, was Indian champion by 16 and won the Grandmaster title one year later. After winning the FIDE World Chess Championship in 2000, and every event since Eurotel Prague in 2002, he has now received the Chess Oscar for 2004, for consistent excellence in the game. That makes him the first non-Russian to win the Oscar four times.
