Anand Confirms
As Sri posted in the message boards, Vishy Anand has confirmed to FIDE his participation in the San Luis world championship. A brief interview with him is here . I first met Anand in 1994 at the Polugaevsky Sicilian Thematic in Buenos Aires. (Spectacularly called the "Polugaevsky Memorial" by my friend Javier Erbe in the Buenos Aires Herald despite Polu's quite corporal presence at the tournament.) The only way this tournament solves anything without Kramnik participating is if it provides the winner with credibility enough to marginalize Kramnik. I don't think it does. But the winner of a serious cycle, such as the one planned by FIDE, would, especially if Kramnik can't get anything going on his side. Does popular opinion matter? What would it take for FIDE to offer the winner a match with Kramnik? You have one group saying FIDE and its title are irrelevant and another group saying Kramnik and his title are irrelevant. My impression is that there is a larger group in the middle, where I am, saying they are all relevant and should get together, and that the chess world would be a better place if this happened, assuming FIDE's bout of sanity continued. Vishwanathan Anand fan club page
This is an unofficial page made by one of Anand's many fans around the world. Last updated 10 November 1998. Anand won the Fontys tournament in Tilburg, scoring 4 wins (all as White), 7 draws, and no losses. Leko and Sadler were also undefeated, but with fewer wins. See the Fontys web site for more information and for pictures of our hero. Put that together with Anand's other major tournament victories in 1998, and it sure looks like Anand is the best in the world! The Linares tournament he won was particularly impressive, a Category 21 event pitting the seven best players in the world against each other in a double-round-robin format (see the cross-table below). Anand also won the grandmaster tournament in Madrid and tied for first at Wijk aan Zee this year. Sure, Karpov and Kasparov both have plausible claims to the World Championship, and both are great players. Affable gentleman that he is, Anand has pretty much steered clear of the debate over whose "World Championship" tournament is more valid, and simply piles up the wins. Here's the Linares cross-table: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Anand 7.5 xx 1= 0= == 1= =1 =1 Shirov 7.0 0= xx == =1 10 10 11 Kasparov 6.5 1= == xx == == == == Kramnik 6.5 == =0 == xx =1 == 1= Svidler 5.5 0= 01 == =0 xx 10 =1 Ivanchuk 5.0 =0 01 == == 01 xx 0= Topalov 4.0 =0 00 == 0= =0 1= xx

Checkmate! Nathalia Jones Vishwanathan Anand, his wife Aruna, and mother, Sushila, share with our readers some aspects of the chess grandmaster's life, and the autobiography he is planning. The book, spiced up with contributions from both the women, promises to be interesting. Every time he won or lost a game, Vishwanathan Anand would write down his impressions in his diary. The `fire' and emotions of the brush with his first chess manual were too strong to be held within, and so these too poured out on paper. As were Anand's various culinary jaunts during his travel abroad. But why are you being told all this? Because in 2005 you'll be encountering all of the above in Anand's autobiography which is being published by Penguin India. The autobiography will be accompanied by a chess manual, "for those who are interested in the game and not in learning about me".

Vishwanathan Anand became India's first grandmaster in 1987. He met Garry Kasparov for the world championship in 1995 at the World Trade Center in New York. Kasparov retained the title, but Anand remains one of the world's elite chess players. I eagerly waited to see the Kasparov vs. Deep Blue rematch. Deep Blue was stronger. Deeper, to be precise. From my own experience, practical play exposes all sorts of weaknesses and strengths in my play that are hidden during preparation. Equally, the team behind Deep Blue must have benefited immensely from studying the six games played against Kasparov in 1996. And it would be faster. I can't tell the difference between 100 zillion positions and 497 zillion positions, but if it helped Deep Blue play stronger, so be it. I was looking forward to Deep Blue boldly going where no man had gone before. Kasparov himself must have studied the games played last year. However, humans can't change their style drastically like computers. On top of that, all his games were accessible to the Deep Blue team, while he was in the dark about Deep Blue. He had two options: to play like Kasparov or to play like "Mr. Anti Deep Blue." The former runs the risk of playing to the strengths of the machines, the latter that the human ends up as disoriented as the machine. Humans, too, play weaker in unfamiliar situations and though they may find their way around better, machines can compensate for that with brute force.

Sports Articles From Rediff.com Salgaocar take full points from NFL opener by Our Correspondent December 12, 2001 Former champions Salgaocar, Goa, began their campaign in the sixth edition of the National Football League with a solitary goal victory over FC Kochin at the Nehru stadium in Fatorda, Goa, on Wednesday. The all-important goal for the 1998-99 champions, who finished sixth out of 12 teams in the last edition of the tournament, was scored by Nigerian striker Glador O'Zaire, in the 47th minute. O'Zaire latched on to a Bello Rasaq pass from the left flank and placed between the feet of Kochin goalkeeper Ali Abubakar. Salgoacar could have won by a bigger margin had they made good even half of the chances that came their way, particularly in the second session. The runners-up of the Goa professional league started off with some quick passing and pressuried the Kochin goal in the initial stages. In the 10th minute their hardworking striker Alvito D'Cunha was well-placed to score but his powerful shot sailed over the bar. The Kerala team came by their best chance in the 31st minute, but Josiah Seton's shot lacked the power to beat Salgaocar 'keeper Kalyan Chowbey.

BANGALORE : Imagine a Bangalore where chess forms an integral part of classroom education. Where students are not only encouraged to excel in it, but are also told that the game will teach them how to tackle life. On Wednesday, this found practise in the Government Girls' Pre-University College , Malleswaram. For the over 3 lakh students, it will be an opportunity to learn the game and improve performance in their studies. Explaining the relationship between chess and education prowess, Anand, inaugurating the programme, said, "When I was in school and active in chess, I had very little time to study for exams. But I found that chess had taught me how to grasp the essentials better and that helped me perform in my exams. Many studies by Russians have proved that chess plays a big role in improving students' academic performance since the former improves cognitive ability." According to Anand , India is now in the Knowledge Economy and doing well in various related fields. If chess is introduced to students early, they can play through the Internet. "The time when chess competitions happen with the help information technology is not far," he said. As part of the initiative, Anand played a game of chess with student Gautami and gave away autographed chessboards to the principal and officials of the department of public instruction.

RRS
MS: What do you think is the ideal age to start playing chess?
RRS: According to me, the ideal age for one to start playing chess is five years. The child should be introduced to the game at this age and basic information about the game should be taught to him, so that by the time he attains the age of six or seven years he would have gained a good idea about the finer points of the game. He should be introduced to play in more number of tournaments and by the time he attains the age of eight he should have made a mark in the State and National level. for e.g. Vishwanathan Anand was introduced to the game of chess at the age of six by his mother and by the age of nine or ten. Anand went on to reach the top in the National level.
MS: Now with the corporate sponsorships coming in from Wipro, Compaq how do you think it has been helping the players cause?
RSS: The corporate sector's bigwigs from the computer industry, Wipro and Compaq have been showing a good interest in promoting the sport since the game co-ordinates more with computers and they also can boost their image and gain some mileage by way of advertisement. The films are sponsoring coaching comps for the promising youngsters in association with the AICF in order to groom them as prospective world champions.
