NBA Greatest Players
All Time Greatest NBA Players Worthy, James When James Worthy retired before the 1994-95 season, it was fitting that Magic Johnson was there to describe Worthy's career. Johnson, after all, had made the passes on the fast break that set up hundreds of Worthy's trademark one-handed swooping dunks. "James Worthy was one of the top 10 top five players in playoff history," Johnson stated at the news conference in which Worthy announced his retirement. No one argued with that assessment. By the time he retired, Worthy owned a Most Outstanding Player Award from the 1982 NCAA Final Four and a Most Valuable Player Award from the 1988 NBA Finals. He was a member of three NBA championship teams with the Los Angeles Lakers (in 1985, 1987, and 1988). His career postseason averages of 21.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game were higher than his regular-season averages of 17.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest. He recorded his first triple-double in arguably the biggest game of his career: Game 7 of the 1988 Finals against Detroit, in which Worthy collected 36 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. He also holds the all-time record for the highest field goal percentage in a five-game playoff series, .721 in the 1985 Western Conference Finals against the Denver Nuggets.

After being named MVP of the Final Four in 1982, he was the #1 overall pick in the 1982 draft, joining the reigning NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers. With the Lakers for 12 consecutive years, Worthy earned the name "Big Game James" for his dazzling performance in championship playoffs. James Worthy won three NBA titles and an NCAA championship. Mike Powell/Allsport NEW ORLEANS (AP) Robert Parish and James Worthy played against each other during the fierce Celtics-Lakers rivalry of the 1980s and were among the 50 greatest players in NBA history. On Monday, they became teammates, elected together to the Basketball Hall of Fame. "I'm still floating, trying to grasp the impact," Parish said. "When I'm inducted I'll think of all my teammates." Also chosen for the basketball shrine were Meadowlark Lemon of the Harlem Globetrotters, NBA pioneer Earl Lloyd, longtime Louisiana Tech women's coach Leon Barmore, Italian player Dino Meneghin and the late Chick Hearn, who broadcast 3,338 consecutive Laker games. The seven were selected from a record group of 30 finalists and will be inducted in early September in Springfield, Mass. Among the finalists not elected were former Missouri coach Norm Stewart and ex-Kansas State coach Tex Winter. Parish holds the NBA record for seasons (21) and games (1,611). He spent 14 seasons with the Celtics and became a star in Boston after six seasons with Golden State.

James Worthy won three championship rings with the L.A. Lakers (1985, 1987, 1988). J.D. Cuban/Getty Images SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) James Worthy and Robert Parish squared off in the classic Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals of the 1980s. Now they could enter the Basketball Hall of Fame side by side. Worthy and Parish were among 21 finalists announced Monday, the largest group ever by the North American screening committee, which considers the men's college and pro game. At least 18 votes from the 24-member honors committee are needed to be a finalist. This September's inductees will be announced April 7 during the NCAA Final Four in New Orleans. Worthy, one of the game's great fast-break finishers, led North Carolina to the NCAA title in 1982 and helped boost Los Angeles to three NBA championships (1985, 1987, 1988). He is one of seven Lakers to have his number retired. Parish holds the NBA record for most seasons (21) and most games (1,611) and helped lead Boston to NBA titles in 1981, 1984 and 1986. He holds the NBA record for defensive rebounds (10,117) and scored 23,334 points during a career that included stints with the Golden State, Charlotte and Chicago as well as 14 seasons with the Celtics.

History
The hall of fame, founded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, opened modestly in October, 1949, in a two-room office on the campus of Springfield College in Massachusetts, where James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. Edward J. Hickox, a former coach at the college, was the hall's unpaid secretary, nurturing the idea and collecting memorabilia. The first members were inducted in 1959 and construction of a building for the hall of fame began two years later. However, construction was halted for lack of money and a new fund-raising drive began. The building finally opened on Feb. 17, 1968. Over a 17-year period, it attracted 630,179 visitors. An $11 million building in a more easily accessible Springfield location was opened to the public on June 30, 1985. In 2002, the Hall of Fame moved into its third building, a $45 million, 80,000-square-foot facility that includes a 136-foot spire supporting a 13-foot illuminated basketball, a full-size basketball court, retail spaces, and a pedestrian bridge to Springfield's Riverfront Park. Nominees for the hall of fame are voted upon by a 24-member committee comprising trustees, media representatives, and inducted inductees.
