Making cuts will be a luxury
July 31, 2005 The white smoke rose from the NBA's chimney in New York early Saturday morning, and now the business of basketball can begin again. Free agents will sign, trades will be completed, and, for a few high-priced, underperforming lads, an involuntary change of scenery may be in the offing. For lack of a better term, call them The Amnesty Guys. One of the twists in the new collective bargaining agreement is a one-time opportunity for teams to jettison a highly paid player who, for whatever reason, is no longer remotely worth what he's earning. (Yes, we know that that constitutes 90 percent of the league, but we're dealing with NBA reality here.) The released player will still be paid his full salary. The released player's salary still stays on the team's payroll for salary cap purposes. The released player becomes a free agent and can sign with another team. So what's the benefit to cutting him loose? If you're one of the league's big (not to be confused with wise) spenders, such as New York, Dallas, Indiana, or the Lakers, you have a chance to save millions in luxury tax payments with this one fell swoop. The player's salary will

    Sour note at end
Celtics can't cash in as they get outworked down stretch
By Peter May, Globe Staff, 11/6/2003 AUBURN HILLS, Mich. As rebound after rebound fell into the wrong hands, as loose ball after loose ball squirted away, as the double-digit lead dwindled and then, eventually, disappeared, you could almost read Jim O'Brien's mind as he paced in front of the Celtics bench. ADVERTISEMENT "I missed the Country Music Awards for this?" Surely, there has to be a song out there about broken hearts and broken plays, about offensive rebounds and second chances, about lost opportunities and bad breaks. The Celtics lived it all last night, getting outhustled and outrebounded down the stretch before succumbing, 96-88, to the Detroit Pistons. The loss was the second straight for Boston after two early wins. And like the other loss (last Saturday to New Orleans), this one was definitely winnable. All that was needed was for someone, anyone, to get a rebound or a loose ball when the game was on the line in the fourth quarter. It didn't happen. "I think our guys know what the difference in the game was," O'Brien said. "I try not to be sarcastic in huddles, but it was pointed out to them."

    OVERVIEW
One of the most gifted athletes to ever come out of the college ranks, Jones is going to be a "pleasant problem" for an NFL team, as his stellar performance during Senior Bowl week has teams wondering what is his true pro position. Arkansas was faced with the same dilemma when Jones enrolled at the school. In addition to his outstanding size, strength and quickness, he has the ability to play equally well in any task he is given. While Jones thrilled Razorback football fans the last four years with his impressive play, he also played basketball for Arkansas. Continuing to impress at every turn, Jones also excelled in the classroom, earning Academic Honor Roll accolades during his time at Arkansas. Jones was an All-Arkansas and all-state quarterback at Northside (Fort Smith, Ark.) High School. He completed 62 of 137 passes for 830 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior and earned 939 yards and 13 touchdowns on 105 rushing attempts. He was ranked in the top five in the state in punt returns. Jones spent the first three years of his prep career at Van Buren (Ark.) High School. He split time as a junior between quarterback and wide receiver, earning 520 yards and five touchdowns on 22 catches. He was a finalist for McDonald's All-America honors in basketball. As a junior in basketball, he broke former Arkansas All-America basketball player Corliss Williamson's conference record for season scoring average (24.5 points per game).
