It was one of his first public activities in Toronto since he signed with the Raptors in June. Wilkens is confident that one way to keep basketball in the news and Raptors fans glued to the game is "to keep Vince Carter here." He was eager to address the young coaches about his passion. "To be a great coach you have to be consistent and open-minded, and you have to direct your energies to help your people get better," Wilkens said. "An important part of my job is to create situations where each individual has a taste of success," Wilkens said. "This builds confidence, and once people grasp success they’re motivated to do more." The men's basketball tournament will feature eight teams, while the women's basketball competition will see four teams vying for gold. Last summer, Cavaliers' Coach Bill Fitch traded guard Butch Beard to the Seattle SuperSonics for veterans Lenny Wilkens and Barry Clemens, which turned out to be the best piece of bartering since Manhattan Island was swindled for $24. Beard has done little to write about for the now-floundering Sonics, Clemens continues to perform admirably in his accustomed role as a backup forward and Wilkens has literally transformed the once laughable Cavaliers into anything but funny to the 16 other teams in the National Basketball Association. THE 35-YEAR OLD Wilkens, with the 25-year-old legs and the 15-year-old hands, has supplied ingredients, notably experience and leadership, previously lacking in the Cleveland expansion team of 1970. Main January 21, 2003 Lenny and the Kids Three weeks ago I wrote about the flaws of Toronto Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens, and how it was time for the organization to let him go. Some events since have redeemed Wilkens, but there is still one glaring problem that seems more present than ever. Consider this column a clarification. Here's what's happened since. The Raptors did finally win a game (two, in fact) after General Manager Glen Grunwald brought in young Rafer Alston to skip and dribble his way through defenses and shake the rest of the players out of their collective slumber. Grunwald also cut Nate Huffman in a move too bizarre and likely unjustified to explain so as to keep Alston, but by that time a new losing streak was just beginning and the kid was playing like everyone else. But more on that later. While this was happening, the press took its gloves off. The knives came out from the rest of the media who for too long had grown tired of seeing a team that made basic basketball seem like rocket science and had to endure press conferences where the coach made it seem like arcane mysticism, unexplainable to the unenlightened. At time scrums take on the character of a substitute teacher admonishing a pack of ignorant first graders, where no respect exists on either side. The result of this has gone a bit too far. Newspapers have begun the Bill Fitch Countdown to commemorate the moment when Wilkens passes Fitch to become the All-Time Losingest Coach in NBA history. The implication is that since Wilkens is so often lauded for winning more games than anyone, he should be equally criticized as the losses pile up. But the truth is neither extreme is particularly compelling: when you've coached 30 years—way, way more than anyone else—eventually all these records will belong to you. If there were ties in the NBA Wilkens would hold that record too.
