INDIANAPOLIS The Logo and the Jumpman, Jerry West and Michael Jordan, are not at the Nike All-America Camp. But their children are. Sons of silhouettes, Jonnie West and Jeffrey Jordan, are camp teammates. Neither player is as good as his father neither is close but imagine having the moxie to play basketball, inviting the comparisons, knowing the result. Jerry West was a Hall of Fame player who scored more than 25,000 points. The NBA logo, a player driving with the ball, was fashioned after him. Michael Jordan was a Hall of Fame player who scored more than 32,000 points. The Nike Jumpman logo, of a player in flight, was fashioned after him. Jonnie West won't be on a logo. He's a 6-foot-2 rising senior from Memphis, and while he's good enough to compete at this camp, the Hoop Scoop recruiting service doesn't consider him among the country's top 800 players from the class of 2006.

In 1960, when the Lakers moved to Los Angeles from Minneapolis, they were joined by a rookie guard from the University of West Virginia. In the ensuing four decades the fate of the team and that rookie, Jerry West, have gone hand in hand.

The impact that the Lakers have had on the city of Los Angeles, and that West has had on the Lakers, have been profound. The fate of the team and the man have evolved to the point where, to many fans, the two have often defined each other.
Former General Manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, Jerry West was very successful with the Los Angeles Lakers, first as a player, then a coach, and finally an executive. Of course, Jerry’s Hall of Fame credentials as a player need no further explanation, while his most recent achievement in his "second" career certainly substantiates Mr. Clutch’s membership in the fraternity of outstanding front office personnel. The sparkling track record speaks for itself. When the Lakers were in the midst of winning five NBA titles en route to earning professional sports’ "Franchise of the Decade" honors during the 1980s, Jerry West, in his typical modest fashion, deflected any credit for the team’s astounding success. According to the Lakers’ master architect, his values as a general manager/player personnel guru would be judged at the end of the Showtime era, when it was time to rebuild the franchise. Well, consider his most recent challenge a tremendous success, and his value immeasurable, with a capital.

PHIL PONCE: In the last-second jump shot last June perhaps the most famous athlete in the world led his team to its sixth NBA championship in eight years. Now, Michael Jordan has ended one of the most storied careers in the history of American sports, in which he won at all levels. Originally cut from his high school basketball team, he later led it to the state championship. In 1982, as a freshman at the University of North Carolina, he scored the winning shot against Georgetown to win the national collegiate championship. Jordan joined the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association in 1984 and led the team to its first championship in 1991 two more followed. He retired briefly after his father died to try his hand at professional baseball but returned to lead the Bulls to three more championships.

Fun Things To Do
My activities outside of work mostly include sports of various kinds. My sport activities are rather limited than what they used to be. Now, I am more a spectator of my son's soccer games and events on TV, rather than a participant. Besides sports, there is bird watching, going to the cottage, music, and helping my son grow up. I like to go on nature walks with Laura and our dog - if the bugs permit. Below are my remembrances of my fun activities. BASKETBALL
I played basketball nearly every day from high school until I moved to Guelph. At Cornell I played frequently with Ivan Mao and Dale Van Vleck. After moving to Guelph I did not have the opportunity to play as frequently as I used to play. I tried reviving my career during my 40's, but having not played for 12 years or more, my shooting eye was gone as well as any speed of movement or jumping ability that I used to possess. In high school, I was able to dunk the ball once. My mother often complained about the finger marks above the doorways that I would leave behind from my practice jumping. At Purdue University, I tried out for the freshman team. The tryouts consisted of 3 nights of play, but there were over 70 players trying out for just 3-4 vacancies on the team. I decided just to have a good time, realizing that the chances of making it would be nil. I got to play 3 times for about 10 minutes each. The head coach sat way up in the bleachers and had someone run between him and the person running things on the court. A fellow named George Smith and I were paired together each night. We double teamed the person with the ball and had several fast breaks as a result of our press. The head coach stopped me on the last night and complimented me on my play, but alas I did not make the team. That year the Purdue freshman team had a fellow called Rick Mount who could shoot the ball from anywhere. Rick eventually took Purdue to the NCAA finals against UCLA and Lew Alcindor (aka Kareem Abdul Jabbar).

Oh Doctor!
Your Take: Who should made the Top Eight
Click here for more on this story Posted: Monday June 14, 1999 11:35 AM Many users feel Hall-of-Famer Julius Erving could have glided his way to our Top Eight. Rick Stewart/Allsport CNN/SI asked users to tell us who should have made our Top Eight list of the Century's Best pro basketball players. The one name that many felt was missing was Julius Erving. Dr. J scored more than 30,000 points (between the ABA and NBA) and revolutionized the art of the dunk. Here's a sampling of your submissions: How could the man they call "Mr. Clutch", and the person that was used in designing the NBA logo not be listed as one of the Top Eight basketball players ever? I submit Jerry West. Jeff Hughes, Chandler AZ Young Lee, Seattle, WA What about... Charles Barkley
Rick Barry
Elgin Baylor
Clyde Drexler
Patrick Ewing
Julius Erving
Anfernee Hardaway
John Havlicek
Elvin Hayes
Jeff Hornacek
Karl Malone Moses Malone Pete Maravich Kevin McHale George Mikan Scottie Pippen Hakeem Olajuwon Shaquille O'Neal Glen Rice Dennis Rodman John Stockton Isiah Thomas Jerry West Jery West should have been on the list instead of Bob Cousy. I don't know one person other than Phil Taylor who would not rank Jerry West ahead of Bob Cousy. West was a great shooter, leader and defender, and a very good ball handler. The only thing Cousy could do better than West was handle the ball, but he was not so much better at that to make up for his inferiority to West in virtually everything else. Elgin Baylor is right up there with West, if not ahead of him. A great scorer with fantastic moves and great strength who was also an excellent rebounder, Baylor was so superior to Cousy that it's almost laughable to mention them in the same breath. I'd also have put Julius Erving, Rick Barry, John Havlicek, and several others ahead of Cousy, despite the fact that I've been a Celtics fan since 1958. Your other seven all deserved to be in the Top Eight.
