History
The hall of fame, founded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, opened modestly in October, 1949, in a two-room office on the campus of Springfield College in Massachusetts, where James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. Edward J. Hickox, a former coach at the college, was the hall's unpaid secretary, nurturing the idea and collecting memorabilia. The first members were inducted in 1959 and construction of a building for the hall of fame began two years later. However, construction was halted for lack of money and a new fund-raising drive began. The building finally opened on Feb. 17, 1968. Over a 17-year period, it attracted 630,179 visitors. An $11 million building in a more easily accessible Springfield location was opened to the public on June 30, 1985. In 2002, the Hall of Fame moved into its third building, a $45 million, 80,000-square-foot facility that includes a 136-foot spire supporting a 13-foot illuminated basketball, a full-size basketball court, retail spaces, and a pedestrian bridge to Springfield's Riverfront Park. Nominees for the hall of fame are voted upon by a 24-member committee comprising trustees, media representatives, and inducted inductees.

By John Antonik
Standing at the podium announcing his retirement from professional basketball in 1975, Jerry West, at 36, had to be wondering what he was going to do with the rest of his life. Many there that day believed West was prematurely ending an NBA basketball career that ranks among the finest in the history of the sport. He averaged more than 20 points per game in his final season in 1974, once again ranking among the league leaders. By most standards his 1974 season was a good reason to continue for everyone that is except West an admitted perfectionist. “I’m not willing to sacrifice my standards,” he said. “Perhaps I expect too much.” West soon immersed himself in the game of golf which much like basketball was something he could master by himself. As he did when he was a kid growing up in Cheylan, W.Va., West practiced and perfected his golf game to the point where he shot a round of 62 at Bel Air Country Club. Yet golf didn’t provide him with the same competitive fire that basketball did. His first stab at post-basketball-playing employment was a three-year coaching stint with the Lakers from 1976-79, leading LA to a 145-101 record and a spot in the playoffs every year.

NBA Greatest Players
All Time Greatest NBA Players West, Jerry Combine a deadly jump shot, tenacious defense, obsessive perfectionism, unabashed confidence, and an uncompromising will to win, and you've got Jerry West, one of the greatest guards in NBA history. During his 14-year playing career with the Los Angeles Lakers, West became synonymous with brilliant basketball. He was the third player in league history to reach 25,000 points (after Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson). He was an All-Star every year of his career and led Los Angeles to the NBA Finals nine times. He left the game holding records for career postseason scoring and the highest average in a playoff series. West's statistical record only begins to tell his story. When the chips were down, West, with his lightning-quick release, was the guy the Lakers turned to for the big basket. Many players have been tagged with the nickname "Mr. Clutch," but none of them lived up to it as well as West did. He was responsible for perhaps the most famous buzzer-beater of all time: a 60-foot swish that tied Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks.

March 26, 1956 East Bank Is Changed To 'West Bank' for Day As Pioneer Fans Cheer By Bob Baker Sports Writer for the Gazette If motorists approaching the city limits of East Bank yesterday weren't basketball fans, they might have been puzzled by a sign reading: "East Bank. Now West Bank." No, the 1,068 citizens of East Bank haven't officially changed the name of their town. They were just showing their excitement about Jerry West leading East Bank High School to its first state Class A basketball championship at Morgantown Saturday. Two rabid East Bank fans, Duke Shaver and Ellis McDaniels, got up at 7 a. m. Sunday morning to put up the sign honoring West, the high-scoring ace of the champion Pioneers. That set the pace for an exciting day for East Bank as the people gave their team a rousing welcome home. While such signs as "Welcome Home Pioneers! State Champions!" waved in the March breeze, the entire population of East Bank and many people from surrounding Cabin Creek District gathered at the high school to await the arrival of Coach Roy Williams and the team from Morgantown.

What a difference a week makes.
After years of speculation, Stromile Swift’s future was determined. And after months of promises and disappointments, Jerry West finally made a trade.
Who knew that the third week of July could be this eventful?
Swift
There were a couple of interesting things about Swift’s signing with Houston:
He took much less than he was offered by Jerry West last summer.
Reportedly, Swift was offered a deal similar to that given to Mike Miller (around $8 million per year) last summer and turned it down because he thought he was worth $10 million per season. But clearly that changed this summer when Swift changed agents. After hearing all year about potential interest from Atlanta and New Orleans, once the free agent season started, all we heard about was Houston and New Jersey – teams that were looking to add a power forward for around the mid-level exception.
It’s also interesting to note Jerry West’s role in this. While West reportedly held discussions with New Jersey and Houston on potential sign and trades, he wouldn’t take back bad players (or bad contracts) for Swift. Now whether this was because of West’s negotiating or whether it was under cost cutting orders from Michael Heisley...that’s the unanswered question.
