Bio: Charles "Stretch" Murphy has a strong historical place among the nation's first great big men. Considered "mammoth" for players of that era, the 6-foot-6 Murphy teamed with John Wooden to form a powerful duo under Hall of Fame coach Ward "Piggy" Lambert at Purdue. Murphy was rated among the nation's best defensive ballplayers of his era, but he was also a dominating offensive force. In 1929, Murphy set a Big Ten Conference record by scoring 143 points. A two-time Helms Athletic Foundation All-America, Murphy was a dominating rebounder whose outlet passes allowed Purdue to pioneer a revolutionary running game. Murphy's crowning achievement came in 1930, when he captained the Boilermakers and led them to an undefeated season and their first outright Big Ten Conference title after co-championships in 1928 and 1929.
