There is another Chinese center taking over the NBA. In fact, he has been doing it since 2001, years before anyone even heard of Yao. The year or so, before the NBA draft of 2002 featured nothing but the Chinese Phenom of Yao Ming. The large center with a shooter's touch who was destined to be the number 1 pick by far, and in fact was. The novelty of a 7'5" Asian basketball player to become a star in the NBA took America by storm. But he wasn't the first, and he's not the only. Zhizhi signed with the Dallas Mavericks in April of 2001, and became the first Chinese player to play in a regular season NBA game when he played eight minutes the next day against Atlanta. Before this however he left a long line of accomplishments back in the Far East. He averaged a team-high 13.5 points and more than five rebounds per game in only 26.8 mpg during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. In the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, he averaged 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Prior to joining the Mavericks, led the Rockets to their sixth straight Chinese Basketball Association Championship in 2000-01. He was named a Chinese Basketball Association All-star and averaged 24.9 points, 11.4 rebounds and 1.77 blocked shots per game for the season. In 1999-2000, he was named regular season, final and All-star Game MVP of the Chinese Basketball Association; also won the Slam Dunk contest (the Chinese Rik Smits?). Also, at the CBA All-star Game in April of 1999, he was named one of the "50 Top Stars of New China Basketball," a list honoring players dating back to the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. | |
