This is a Chinese name ; the family name is Wang
Wang Zhizhi July 8 in Beijing, China ) is a professional basketball player in the American National Basketball Association . He was previously a star of the Chinese national team and played for the Bayi Rockets of the Chinese Basketball Association . He was signed by the Dallas Mavericks in 2001, and has since played for the Los Angeles Clippers and currently the Miami Heat . Tall at 7' 1" (216 cm ) and athletic, Wang is primarily known in the NBA for being a great long range shooter. However, he was crowned the slamdunk champion one year in China's CBA league. His minutes have been very limited in the NBA, particularly after he was dismissed from the Chinese national team for failing to return to China and practice with the Chinese national team, a move which was considered to be not smart and obviously has hurt his career. The other Chinese players to join the NBA since Wang are Mengke Bateer and Yao Ming

Mavericks trade Feng Shui for Wang Zhizhi
Article written by:
Steven Schindler
Way out west in La-La land basketball disciples swarm to the eastern practice of Feng Shui in a fanatical effort to become one with the hardwood. They clear their minds to gain more profound knowledge of the triangle offense. They strive to replace ancient hair-pulling rituals with a more reasoned awareness of just what the heck Phil Jackson is doing with their beloved Lakers.
Way down south in the land of cotton Don Nelson, Mark Cuban and their blue-and-green collar Dallas troops will have none of this sissified, Brie cheese eating gobbledy-gook. For the Mavericks Fung Shui is out and Wang Zhizhi is in.
That's right, Wang Zhizhi. Wang as in "Walking Great Wall" of China. Zhizhi as in "I'm much bigger than you," and "What are you going to do about it?"
23-year old Wang Zhizhi has been a 7'1" stalwart of the Red army's Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) for years now and he is coming to America to prove once and for all that there is a place in the NBA for he and his countrymen.
Many international experts now agree that China is behind only the U.S. in regards to basketball talent. The old international powers of Yugoslavia and Russia will soon find themselves falling behind China as reigning world round ball powers. China is doing an excellent job of combing its burgeoning population for the size it needs to cultivate world-class hoops teams.

From: China A threat from beyond the arc... At 7-1, that long-range shot is the main weapon of the first Chinese ever to play in the league... Big first step... Don't expect much from him on the defensive end... Not a great rebounder either... A very interesting player, though. Grew up in August First (China).

Wang's arrival in NBA transcends the sport
By Steve Friess
Special for USA TODAY BEIJING He's a basketball player, so he's supposed to be tall. But when 7-foot Wang Zhizhi strides through a Beijing restaurant en route to a private karaoke lounge to conduct an interview, it's hard not to be stunned by how close his head comes to the ceiling. The Chinese gape because Wang, 23, is one of the most famous basketball players in China. American tourists stare, too, wondering who the giant might be. They'll likely find out soon enough. Wang is in the final stages of securing a release from the top military basketball team in China to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, which could occur as early as Thursday. He's likely to be followed this year or next by 7-6 center Yao Ming, 20, as the first two Asian players in the NBA. Both already have endorsement contracts with Nike and are receiving either representation or advice from Bill Duffy Associates, a San Francisco-based basketball talent agency.

DREAMING OF CHICAGO
The first Asian star in the NBA?
S INCE HIS FATHER (WANG Weijun, 1.96 m tall [6 ft 5 in]) and mother (Ren Huanzhen, 1.86 m [6 ft 1 in]) were both basketball players, it was perhaps only natural for Chinese star Wang Zhizhi to forge a career in lay-ups and slam-dunks. At 2.16 m (7 ft 1 in), Wang plays for the Bayi Rockets in China's Hilton League and is widely regarded as Asia's best shot at the NBA. He spoke to Asiaweek Contributor Anne Naham about his chances, the Chinese national team and his favorite player (it isn't Michael Jordan). How do you feel about this NBA attention? Nervous, yet not nervous. I am confident about my basketball abilities. I know I can be a good player, but I am still a bit uncertain about it all, of course. What do you think are your chances of going to the U.S.?

Yao Ming No. You are mistaken. There is another Chinese center taking over the NBA. In fact, he has been doing it since 2001, years before anyone even heard of Yao. The year or so, before the NBA draft of 2002 featured nothing but the Chinese Phenom of Yao Ming. The large center with a shooter's touch who was destined to be the number 1 pick by far, and in fact was. The novelty of a 7'5" Asian basketball player to become a star in the NBA took America by storm. But he wasn't the first, and he's not the only. Zhizhi signed with the Dallas Mavericks in April of 2001, and became the first Chinese player to play in a regular season NBA game when he played eight minutes the next day against Atlanta. Before this however he left a long line of accomplishments back in the Far East. He averaged a team-high 13.5 points and more than five rebounds per game in only 26.8 mpg during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. In the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, he averaged 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Prior to joining the Mavericks, led the Rockets to their sixth straight Chinese Basketball Association Championship in 2000-01. He was named a Chinese Basketball Association All-star and averaged 24.9 points, 11.4 rebounds and 1.77 blocked shots per game for the season. In 1999-2000, he was named regular season, final and All-star Game MVP of the Chinese Basketball Association; also won the Slam Dunk contest (the Chinese Rik Smits?). Also, at the CBA All-star Game in April of 1999, he was named one of the "50 Top Stars of New China Basketball," a list honoring players dating back to the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
