The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) announced its decision September 9 afternoon to expel its former member Wang Zhizhi out of the national men's basketball team.
According to agreements between CBA and Dallas Mavericks, Wang should serve the need of national team by returning to China and preparing for international matches after finishing NBA games in America in last May.
But Wang, after receiving CBA's notice demanding him to return home and join in training for the World Championships and the Asian Games, stayed in America under the excuse of personal need and training for NBA summer leagues, and further cut off contacts with CBA. After the leagues finished Wang refused to meet people from CBA and made clear his hope to say in NBA instead of returning to China, CBA's announcement said.
During a period as long as five months, China's team made many efforts in a hope to change Wang's mind, and publicly promised that Wang could continue its NBA training after the World Championships and the Asian Games as well as made corresponding preparations for him.

It is a sword that can ordain basketball all-stars, myths and even legends. But for the 23-year-old Chinese giant, this process will need time. For instance, take note of the path taken by future Hall-of-Famer Hakeem Olajuwon of the Toronto Raptors, who is the first player from Nigeria to strap on sneakers in the NBA. After a successful collegiate career with the Houston Cougars, Olajuwon became the first overall pick in the NBA by the Houston Rockets. What separated Olajuwon from the rest of the centers was his unique game. He could challenge you in the post, trip your feet with a cross-over dribble, or step back to rain in 15-foot jumpers.

By Alex Lyda/AP Bob Wang, a mechanic and Taiwanese immigrant who is not related to the basketball player, said Wang Zhizhi may draw Chinese reporters to the United States, and perhaps help them shed impressions of this country as an aggressive, imperialist power. Wang signed a two-year contract, believed to be worth $316,969 per season, after Mavericks owner Mark Cuban met with agent Bill Duffy, who also represents Mavericks guard Steve Nash. And if Wang will serve as a sort of diplomatic bridge for the two countries, it may be helped by his returning home often.
