"One of the saddest days for Coach Wooden was the day he came down and had to bail me out of jail after I got arrested in the anti-Vietnam protest. He said, 'Bill, I know you feel very strongly about this, but I just don't think that you getting arrested and taking part in this demonstration is what it's all about," says Bill Walton on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Before the injuries hampered his professional career, Bill Walton dominated college basketball. From 1972-74, Bill Walton led UCLA to an 86-4 record and two national titles. At UCLA in the early '70s, the 6-foot-11, 235-pound center was the linchpin of the Bruins winning an NCAA record 88 consecutive games. Walton didn't just play basketball; he understood the soul of the game. He learned about competition early, beginning at Blessed Sacrament Elementary School in La Mesa, a suburb of San Diego. A shy and nervous seventh grader who stuttered, Walton was in no hurry to leave the restroom before the tip-off of a local Catholic league championship game. His coach, Rocky Graciano, took note of the promising player's trepidation and told him, "Bill, you've got to learn to love these moments because this is what sports is all about, playing for the championship. You're going to play in a lot of these championship games before you're through and you have to look forward to each one as if it's the greatest opportunity and the greatest moment of your life."

At UCLA in the 1970s, Bill Walton led his team to an 86-4 record over three seasons and was named college player of the year three times. He averaged 20.3 points and 15.7 rebounds per game, and in 1973 he played maybe the single greatest college game ever, going 21-for-22 in an NCAA title win over Memphis State. Bill Walton takes his "Love it Live" tour to Boston in the Eastern Conference finals. In the pros, Walton was the leader of the 1977 NBA champion Portland Trail Blazers. He was the league's best sixth man when he played for the 1986 champion Boston Celtics and 10 years later he was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history. It's a mighty impressive record, but if you ask him, the Big Redhead will tell you that his all-time greatest accomplishment was landing a spot on NBC's lead NBA announcing team, alongside Marv Albert and Steve "Snapper" Jones. What's so great about that? That's what Page 2's Eric Neel wanted to know, so he caught up to Walton at the end of the big man's "Love it Live" tour and peppered him with 10 Burning Questions about announcing, playing, listening to The Grateful Dead, maintaining the Wooden legacy and keeping the basketball faith. You had a unique look then, with your long red hair and beard, the headband and knee pads. Were you conscious of having a particular style?
