Walton strolls down memory lane By Jeff D'Alessio The Sporting News Hall of Famer and MSNBC columnist Bill Walton had more than one shining moment as a UCLA Bruin. Big Red's best postseason effort came in the 1973 championship game against Memphis State, when he hit 21-of-22 shots in the Bruins' 87-66 win. These days, Walton's in the broadcasting business, calling NBA games for NBC and NCAA Tournament action for CBS. TSN: Think we'll ever see another dynasty like UCLA in college basketball? BW: Well, the elements are not there. First of all, you have to have the incredible selflessness of Coach Wooden and the uniqueness of him. There's Lute Olson, at the college level today. There's Mike Krzyzewski. But with Coach Wooden, you're talking about a person that comes along once in history. And then you're talking about the uniqueness of UCLA and what an incredible place that is. And you're talking about a changed landscape in our culture, where education and going to college is not as highly prized and valued as it was before. You see high school players not even thinking about going to college. The dream of being a part of a great college basketball team is not there. All they want to think about is money. And then you've got the changed mindset of the players. It used to be that all the players wanted to go to the same school and be part of a great team and play with other great players. Now, people want to go where there's nobody else who's any good so that they can be the individual star. While we would like to see brilliance and sustained greatness at the collegiate level, unless things turn around in our culture, it's not going to happen anytime soon. You see what happened with that Duke team just two years ago when they had all these highly talented players. And they left. After one year. How sad.
