Tar Heels exert superiority over MSU in second half

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER April 3, 2005
ERIC GAY / Associated Press North Carolina's Jawad Williams looks down on Michigan State's Drew Naymick after scoring via a dunk during the first half of yesterday's NCAA men's basketball tournament semifinal won by the Tar Heels.
Felton was the most significant player in the track meet that was this national semifinal last night, directing North Carolina past Michigan State 87-71 before 47,754 at the Edward Jones Dome. "The talk about a dream game is something made up by all of you media members," said UNC guard Rashad McCants. "We'll play anybody. It doesn't matter to us." Felton has said he never really tried developing a skill for pushing the ball from one end of the court to the next, that his ability to dictate tempo in a game of such massive implications is more instinct than routine.

Vaughn, Howard head GTE academic basketball teams
Players from Kansas, North Carolina State, Case Reserve and Millikin lead this year's GTE Academic All-America men's and women's basketball teams. Senior guard Jacque Vaughn of Kansas and senior Jennifer Howard of North Carolina State are GTE Academic All-America Team Members of the Year in university division basketball, and seniors James Fox of Case Reserve and Julie Roe of Millikin earned Team Member of the Year honors in the college division. The Team Member of the Year recognition goes annually to the players who "best represent the qualities of an Academic All-America student-athlete." Vaughn, whose team advanced to the regional semifinals of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship after being ranked No. 1 for most of the season, is a business administration major at Kansas. A repeat first-team Academic All-America selection, Vaughn was joined on the first team by Jayhawk teammate Jerod Haase. It is the first time that two members of a top-ranked team have been first-team selections in basketball, according to College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) chair Dick Lipe. North Carolina State's Howard, a communications major, led her team to an appearance in the Division I Women's Basketball Championship.

Vaughn's jersey retired during KU's defeat of UCLA Photo by Jeff Jacobsen Former standout guard Jacque Vaughn was honored at halftime during the KU-UCLA game Dec. 21 in Allen Field House. The emotional celebration added luster to the Jayhawks' 87-80 triumph over the Bruins. After the first half ended, Coach Roy Williams introduced Vaughn, b'97, who currently plays for the NBA's Orlando Magic. As the sentimental sellout crowd gave Vaughn a standing ovation, Williams pointed to the rafters on the south side of the Field House. "For 15 years I've been coming into this arena and looking at these jerseys, and I've never coached one of these players," he said. "It's a great thrill for me today to welcome Jacque Vaughn back home." As he recalled various highlights of Vaughn's KU career, Williams pointed to places on the court where Vaughn's memorable moves helped save pivotal games: "Right over there, freshman year, against Indiana with 1 second left in overtime, hit three. (KU wins 86-83) Over there, spin move against UCLA."

History
College basketball All-America teams weren't named until 1929, when both College Humor Magazine and the Christy Walsh Syndicate began selecting teams. The first truly authoritative selections were made by the Converse Yearbook , beginning in 1932 and continuing through 1948. Other major selectors didn't get involved in naming basketball All-Americans until after World War II: Associated Press in 1948, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and United Press in 1949, and International News Service in 1950. However, the Helms Athletic Foundation (now the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles) chose basketball All-Americans retroactively, beginning in 1920. The Helms panel named ten players for each year, but didn't categorize them as first team or second team. Several of the other major selectors have chosen second- and third-team All-Americans from time to time, though not with any great consistency. The lists below incorporate the Helms All-American teams from 1920 through 1932. From that point on, players selected by other sources are also included.
