His contract, which had one year remaining, will be honored. "We have decided to go in a different direction," said Pacers President and CEO Donnie Walsh, who added the search for a replacement will begin immediately. Larry Bird in his first major move as President of the team, decided that it would be best to part ways."I just had a gut feeling this wasn't going to work," Bird said of the suprise move that came only 2 months before the start of the NBA season. Bird said he did not feel at ease with Thomas as coach of the team, after a 2nd half funk that left the team to be upset in the first round of the NBA playoffs last year. ESPN is reporting, that former Pistons coach Rick Carlisle has agreed to take the Pacers job, and will be named coach. My take this is Bird just picking a coach he feels more at ease working with. Carlisle was Bird's assistant when Larry was coaching the team and he lead the Pistons to 2 solid seasons even won coach of the year, so its not like he is a bad coach.
