Good Riddance Vince Carter!
There's cause for celebration tonight: As you read this, the NBA is approving a proposed trade between the Toronto Raptors and the New Jersey Nets that would see the Vince Carter in a different uniform . A Raptor team that has struggled on and off the court this year is having it’s biggest tumor removed as General Manager Rob Babcock worked out a deal that will finally send Vinsanity packing. Raptor fans have consoled themselves with the belief that this day would finally come after witnessing a dismal start to the season. The trade comes on the heels of a monstrous victory as the team punished the Minnesota Timberwolves at the ACC this past Wednesday night. In return for Vince, the Nets will be saying their goodbyes to centre Alonzo Mourning, forward Aaron Williams, guard Eric Williams and a pair of first round picks. The new faces will drastically improve the teams defensive game that has been struggling to contain the league’s top scorers as of late.
And to Vince, Torontoist would like to wish you the worst of luck. You couldn't bust a grape in a fruit fight. We're sure you'll look terrific on the Nets’ sideline. Thanks for nothing!

TeamStore Basketball binds former Yugoslavia Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday July 03, 2001 11:36 AM TREVISO, Italy Funny how closely Yugoslav political history and basketball annals in that snakebit part of the world track each other. The Nazis attacked Belgrade on April 6, 1941. Bosna Sarajevo won Yugoslavia's first European club championship on April 6, 1979. The first shots in the war in Bosnia were fired on you guessed it April 6, 1992. So why wouldn't we reach one more milepost for hoops in the Balkans on another day marinated in historical meaning? Let the record reflect that date as June 28. Last Thursday was the day Slobodan Milosevic was spirited off to the Hague hoosegow. It was the 612th anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo Polje that the Serb strongman exploited in his rise to power. It was the 87th anniversary of the Austrian archduke's assassination in Sarajevo that touched off World War I. And it was the eve of the arrival of 50 kids, ages 12 to 14, drawn equally from the five successor states of the former Yugoslavia, who gathered here for Basketball Without Borders, a collaborative effort of the United Nations, the NBA and FIBA. The plan: Take the kids, assign them to teams regardless of nationality, and have them bunk in with their new mates. Nine pros from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia and the Serbian and Montenegrin leftovers of Yugoslavia came, too to teach the game, yes, but also to teach lessons in leadership and tolerance and how to stand up to peer pressure. Among the counselor-coaches were

The three-day event, "Basketball without Borders", also will include seminars designed to promote leadership, conflict resolution and living a healthy life without drugs, as part of the celebration of the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed 26 June 2001.

Wolves sign John Thomas to 10-day contract
Minnesota Timberwolves News / Jan. 10, 2005 Minnesota Timberwolves Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale today announced the NBA club has signed free-agent forward John Thomas to a 10-day contract and has placed forward Mark Madsen on the Injured List (fractured left thumb). Per team policy, no financial terms of Thomas' agreement were disclosed. Madsen must remain on the Injured List a minimum of five games and will not be eligible to be activated until Jan. 18.
Thomas, a University of Minnesota graduate, appeared in six preseason games for the Wolves this season, averaging 3.7 points (.500 FG%) and 4.2 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game. Thomas was signed as a free agent by Minnesota on Oct. 4 and was waived by the team on Nov. 1. He then signed with the Continental Basketball Association's Sioux Falls SkyForce, where he averaged 16.3 points (.559 FG%), 10.1 rebounds and 35.4 minutes per game in 20 games (started 19).
Thomas (6-9, 255) was drafted 25th overall by the New York Knicks in the 1997 NBA Draft. He was traded by New York with Walter McCarty, Dontaé Jones and Scott Brooks to the Boston Celtics for Chris Mills on Oct. 22, 1997 and then traded by the Celtics with Chauncey Billups, Dee Brown and Roy Rogers to the Toronto Raptors for Kenny Anderson, Zan Tabak and Popeye Jones on Feb. 18, 1998. His best NBA season came in 1998-99, when he averaged 4.3 points (.577 FG%) and 3.4 rebounds in 15.2 minutes in 39 contests for Toronto. Thomas spent the 2003-04 season with Casademont Girona of the Spanish Basketball League, averaging 10.1 points and 5.1 rebounds in 31 contests.

Return to Star Library FactFile: Isiah Thomas Thomas fulfilled by Pacers' growth over season Rookie coach is proud of team's efforts at "rebuilding on the fly," after losing 3 starters.
BY MARK MONTIETH STAFF WRITER
Published: June 6, 2001, The Indianapolis Star Isiah Thomas' rookie season as coach of the Indiana Pacers brought major transition to the franchise. With three starters gone from the team that had reached the NBA Finals, and using several players with minimal NBA experience, Thomas' team finished 41-41 and was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Philadelphia 76ers. Thomas was the subject of considerable criticism during the season for juggling the lineup and his unconventional offensive approach, but he believes he and his team are on the proper course. He also appears to have the support of team president Donnie Walsh, who believes Thomas improved in the mundane aspects of coaching during his first season and showed a natural instinct for its finer points.
