Szczerbiak's role at Miami: 'be Superman' By Marc Hardin, Post contributor Miami University basketball coach Charlie Coles has an expanded plan this season for junior forward Wally Szczerbiak. ''Wally's role this year is to be Superman,'' Coles said of the 6-foot-8, 231-pound sharpshooter from Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. ''Everybody knows he can score (37 points per game in summer-league action, 28.9 in high school). Now it's my job to make sure he gets more chances to do that. We want him - we need him - to score more.'' So far, the plan is working. Szczerbiak scored 31 points in Miami's season opener at Tennessee last week and followed that with a 41-point performance Saturday at Dayton. Coles needs Szczerbiak to shoot to help offset the RedHawks' loss of three-time all-Mid-American Conference forward Devin Davis, who completed his eligibility last season as the school's second all-time leading scorer. Szczerbiak, already Miami's career leader in three-point shooting (.464), averaged 12.8 points and 5.4 rebounds last season. His performance earned him the team's most improved player award. ''There have been no limits put on me this year, so I'm not going to limit myself,'' Szczerbiak said. ''This is going to be a breakout year for me, and I've prepared for that.'' | |
