Basketball Great Michael Jordan Fired by Washington Wizard’s Owners Abe Pollin and Ted Leonsis
According to Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban, “you hate to say it, but I think MJ got used. Now, where are the Wizards? Both parties lose in all of this. Michael gets tainted, and the Wizards lose their No. 1 draw.” During his time at the Wizards, they became the most popular road draw and made $30 million, selling out every game. Michael Jordan, while playing for the Chicago Bulls in the ‘90s, led them to six NBA championship titles.
BET Founder Bob Johnson Wants Michael Jordan to Join Charlotte North Carolina’s New NBA Team
5-8-03. Bob Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television, has asked basketball legend, Michael Jordan to join his Charlotte expansion franchise. The two friends met at a Chicago Bulls game twelve years ago. According to Johnson, who purchased the yet-to-be-named team for $300 million, “absolutely I want him to be involved. He can play any role he wants to play, frankly.” Jordan is being shopped around by his representatives to other franchises, including the Chicago Bulls, whom he played for 13 years and the Atlanta Hawks, who are for sale.

Walt Szczerbiak Interview

Walt Szczerbiak, Forward, Pittsburgh Condors, 1971-72 . An edited transcript of our conversation, April 20, 1999 Brett: Any chance we could talk briefly about your time with the Condors? Walt: Sure. What did you think of the ABA at the time? For me, it was an ideal situation. I enjoyed the ABA. I thought it was a fun league. I thought it was a league in which entertainment was just as important as the result of the game, from the standpoint of the players trying to put on a show in addition to trying to win a game. So you had Julius Erving, who broke in the same year I did, and Charlie Scott, and George Gervin on that Virginia Squires team. You had players like George McGinnis, who looked like he was going to take basketball to another level the way he never used his off hand. You had Mel Daniels, who I think could have been a great center in the NBA. You had an Indiana Pacers team that was really, really good, and a Utah Stars team that was excellent also. And for me, like I said, it was a dream come true, because I got to play in Pittsburgh, which is my hometown, and I could literally live in my mothers house where I grew up. I'd roll out of bed and walk seven minutes to practice to a place, a gym, where, the Market House, where I used to play as a youngster.

The T-Wolves may well land in the playoffs again, but 2000's still a rebuilding year
First-round draft pick Wally Szczerbiak has shown he can lighten the offensive burden on Kevin Garnettprovided his shaky defense holds up Photo By David Kern After the Minnesota Timberwolves concluded their tumultuous 1999 season with a home playoff loss to San Antonio in May, coach and general manager Flip Saunders stood before the assembled media for a parting press conference. Having watched star players Tom Gugliotta and Stephon Marbury force their way out of town during the previous six months, Saunders proclaimed, "We have to bring in a dynamic player. We owe it to our team and our fans to show our commitment....I guarantee we will do a lot of things and put a spark back into our organization, to where it was last year at this time with the expectations and the enthusiasm." Didn't happen. Since Saunders uttered his guarantee, it has been the Wolves' Western Conference rivals who have made the dynamic changes: Portland traded for Scottie Pippen and Steve Smith, Phoenix signed star free agent Penny Hardaway, and Los Angeles recruited ex-Bulls head coach Phil Jackson to pilot the Lakers. On the brink of the new season, what has Minnesota added to last year's squad? A couple of promising rookies in draft picks Wally Szczerbiak and William Avery, and, thanks to a rash of injuries to the team's already suspect front court, either overmatched ex-Gopher Trevor Winter or 40-year-old journeyman Danny Schayes. On a ballclub that won just 13 of 32 games after Marbury's midseason exit, that's a sorry excuse for a spark to rekindle the optimism of a year ago.

SPORTSLINE by Andrij Kudla Wynnyckyj BASKETBALL Ukrainian in top 10 in NBA draft On August 2, Wally Szczerbiak, 22, a Ukrainian native of Madrid, Spain, who now hails from Cold Spring Harbor (Long Island), N.Y., was signed to a three-year $6.47 million contract by the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association's Western Conference. According to a report by Tim Klobuchar of the Minnesota Star Tribune, the value of the contract is "the maximum amount allowed ... under the league's collective bargaining agreement. Szczerbiak will make $2.01 million this season, $2.16 million in the second year and $2.31 in the third. The team holds an option for a fourth year at $2.9 million." Earlier this summer, on July 1, Mr. Szczerbiak became a top-10 pick in the first round of the NBA draft. He was taken sixth over all by the Timberwolves, the decision made by the club's vice-president, former Boston Celtic star and recent Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Kevin McHale. In the Associated Press story about the draft, Marty Blake, the NBA's scouting director, was quoted as saying: "Wally was the best shooter in college basketball [in the 1998-1999] season." Minnesota Head Coach and General Manager Flip Saunders said: "We are pleased to have Wally on board. He's a smart player and a solid shooter. We feel he can contribute immediately."

NCAA highlights: Miami, UK, Ohio State alive and kicking; XU women ripped off in Connecticut By Bill Peterson By Christopher Witflee
The phenomenon has moved, however, to a newly defined manifold of time and space known as "Wally World" shortened, in some circles, to "World." It's a world not unlike the one we've always known, a world in which the championship tournaments of college basketball amuse us with upsets and unresolved tensions while proceeding, more or less, according to form. We look at the brackets to find names like UCLA, North Carolina, Stanford, Cincinnati and Utah eliminated, while those of Miami ( our Miami), Oklahoma, Gonzaga and Southwest Missouri State remain. But the top seeds Duke, Connecticut, Michigan State and Auburn are right there with them, and we can now pull back from the thrill of seeing giants fall as the cosmos assumes its predictable pattern this weekend. Only once has a team seeded 10th or higher reached the Final Four, that being LSU in 1986. At this point in the tournament, we can see clearly why the seedings are so important and why the only seed that ultimately matters is the top one. To be seeded at the top of a region guarantees an easy first-round break-in game while other worthy contenders are fighting off competitive upstarts. In the second round, the top seed never has to play anyone higher than an eight seed, while other contenders face serious trouble.
