In the 19 years between those emotional extremes, John Stockton set unbreakable records and cuss-worthy picks, and defined the essence of both the position he played and the city from which he came. No, he never won a championship ring - but he managed a feat far more difficult. He made his old man's tavern on Hamilton one of the most famous saloons in the United States. John Stockton walked away from professional basketball on Friday at the age of 41, or rather he hurried away before the tears started fast-breaking down his cheeks - the flinty toughness and stubborn stoicism that carried him through 19 National Basketball Association seasons now stripped bare by a single word. Stockton let his game speak for him
By Sam Smith
Special to ESPN.com
Right to the end, John Stockton was the perfect point guard. He ended one of the greatest careers in the history of American professional sports with an assist, having someone else say he was retiring. He mentioned in a team meeting with owner Larry Miller and coach Jerry Sloan on Friday that it probably was time, and a Jazz spokesperson broke the news to the media. Stockton then spoke briefly with reporters in the Jazz locker room and left. Just perfect. No celebration, though there could be. We won't demand one because Stockton would hate it. No arena filled with admiring fans coming to their feet in appreciation. No gifts. No series of interviews and press conferences. It's said no one will ever surpass the records for assists and steals that Stockton has established. I'm saying no one ever breaks his record for boring interviews. Stockton was never rude. He never was mean or unfriendly. It's just that no one ever mastered the art of making inquiring reporters go away like he did. There always was an answer, but never personally revealing, never with a glib one-liner or clever anecdote.

John Stockton and the
No-Look Pass: What a Patent Isn't
Karl R. Cannon O ne time a writer asked me, a patent attorney, if I could get him a patent on a book he had written. Another time, a business owner wondered if she could patent her product name. And one of my favorites was a sports enthusiast's observation of Utah Jazz basketball player John Stockton's "patented no-look pass." Although it's technically erroneous, this latter example is a delightful vernacular use of the word patent. Such expressions are certainly not objectionable. But if you're wondering where these folks erred, read on. John Stockton's no-look pass, although brilliant and admired by basketball fans across the nation, is not patentable. But if it were, John Stockton would do well to patent it. He could then prevent competing basketball players from using a no-look pass without his permission. Like other patent holders, John could reserve his permission for those willing to pay a handsome license fee. But that would unduly complicate the game of basketball: imagine a referee penalizing a player for patent infringement! A patent is a powerful legal instrument. Briefly stated, it guarantees an inventor's right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention. Patents fall into three categories: utility patents for devices and processes, design patents for ornamental designs, and plant patents for certain asexually produced plants.

By John Amaechi
Utah Jazz forward/centre
The season is over and already there have been significant changes at the Utah Jazz. John Stockton has announced his retirement and questions have been asked about Karl Malone's next move. I feel honoured to have had the opportunity to play with two of the best point-guards in NBA history this year in John and Mark Jackson, as well as the one of the league's best forwards. John and Mark are number one and two respectively in career assists and in an era when the "pure point-guard" seems rarer than ever, I don't think anyone is going to get near them. Feature: Stockton leaves a gap As for Karl, I don't think there will ever be a power player who can take (and dish out) as much punishment as he has over the years.

Britain's best ever basketball player and Utah Jazz star John Amaechi gave his answers to the pick of your e-mails.
Amaechi was the first ever Briton to start a game in the NBA. His big breakthrough came in the 1999-2000 season when he made the roster with Orlando Magic. He finished sixth in the voting for the NBA's Most Improved Player award - and he hasn't looked back since. Amaechi's guide to the NBA finals Amaechi even earned himself a place in the Hall of Fame for scoring the first NBA points of the new Millennium. In 2001 he moved to Utah Jazz, where he has played alongside greats like Karl 'the Mailman' Malone and John Stockton. Thanks for sending in your questions - either click below to listen to John's answers or read the transcription further down. Interviewed by BBC Sport's James Doe.

Next Stockton's Marriage to the NBA Isn't Quite Over Yet Sunday, May 5, 2002 BY GORDON MONSON THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Some people say John Stockton has passed through the onset of the winter of his career and now is pondering retirement. At some point over the next few weeks, he's supposedly sitting down with wife, Nada, and the kids and talking about what comes next. Pah!Is there really any doubt? ÊÊÊ Should Michelangelo paint and sculpt? Should Shakespeare write? Should Edison invent? Should Einstein think? Should De Niro act? Should Stockton dribble and pass? Why shouldn't he? On account of some worn deference to chronology? Because more than the standard load of sand has passed through the hourglass? Because the pages of the calendar have turned? It's what the man does. It's what he is. What he remains. How would you like to be a big-eared fly on the wall during that little discussion? John: "Well, gang, I'm, uh, thinking about, well, geez, wondering if maybe I should, you know, um . . . qui . . .. I mean, if I should . . . stop playing basketball for a living."

History
U.S. teams demonstrated basketball at the Olympics in 1904, 1924, and 1928. When the game became an official Olympic sport in 1932, its inventor, James Naismith , was given the honor of tossing the opening jump ball for the first game. The United States completely dominated Olympic basketball competition through 1964, winning 54 consecutive games, often by as many as 50 or 60 points. In 1968, though, most of the top college players passed up the Olympic trials because they didn't want to jeopardize their professional careers, and Yugoslavia was generally favored to win the gold medal over the young, little-known U. S. team. However, the Americans extended the winning streak to 63 games, beating Yugoslavia, 65-50, for the championship. The streak went to 71 games in 1972, but it ended in the Gold Medal game against the Soviet Union, amidst much furore. The U. S. led, 50-49, with three seconds to play. Inbounding the ball from under their own basket, the Soviets twice threw it the length of the court without scoring, but both times the officials ruled that the scoreboard clock had to be reset. On the third try, the court-length pass succeeded and a Soviet player scored the winning basket. The U. S. appealed the decision but lost, and the team unanimously voted not to accept the silver medal.

NBA Greatest Players
All Time Greatest NBA Players Stockton, John Some play a position exquisitely, just as it was designed. That would be John Stockton at point guard. A fast, gritty, durable player who saw the floor as well as anyone who ever played the game, he left the NBA after 19 seasons with the Utah Jazz, holding a mass of assists records, including the career mark (15,806). As Stockton giveth, he taketh away: He led the league in steals twice and, with a career total of 3,265, he retired as the NBA's all-time leader. He also played all 82 games in 17 of his 19 seasons and his career shooting percentage was .515, a remarkable statistic for a guard. "There absolutely, positively, will never ever be another John Stockton – ever," said Karl Malone, Stockton's teammate for 18 seasons.
