Ex-Knick calmly coaches in USBL vs. Blue Ducks
BY JOHN CALKINS
FLORIDA TODAY
MELBOURNE As a player, John Starks was a fireball of motion and emotion a heck of a shooter, a tenacious defender and a hurricane of a competitor. As the head coach of the USBL's Westchester Wildfire, though, Starks seems somewhat serene. Think Diet John Starks. In fact, Starks rarely, if ever, rose to his feet during his team's 106-97 loss to the Blue Ducks on Wednesday night. "I try to stay calm, cool and collected as much as possible, but sometimes my competitive nature comes out on the sidelines," said Starks, who watched former Florida Gator Teddy Dupay light up his Wildfire for 27 points. "But I'm trying to work on that and be a little calmer on the sidelines." It's not the Starks fans knew and loved or hated. After all, it's no secret that during his NBA days spent mostly with the New York Knicks Starks was the man opposing fans loved to hate. And boo. And heckle.

JOHN STARKS TO COACH IN USBL MILFORD, CT - The United States Basketball League announced the hiring of former New York Knicks All-Star, John Starks as the head coach of the expansion Westchester Wildfire. He takes the helm of the Wildfire immediately in preparation for the team's inaugural season, which runs from April 19 through June 21. Starks began his career in basketball's minor leagues and rose to become an All-Star guard for the Knicks, playing for eight years during the team's playoff runs in the 1990s. In 1997 he was awarded the NBA's "Sixth Man Award." Starks retired from playing in the NBA after the 2001-02 season with the Utah Jazz. "As my playing career wound down, it was clear to me that my future interest was in coaching basketball on the professional level," said Starks. "As a player and fan, I love this sport and know that I have a lot of basketball insight to offer rookies and veteran players alike. Coaching the Westchester Wildfire, in the backyard of my basketball hometown, New York, is both an honor and an exceptional opportunity for me." The Wildfire will visit Brevard for 3 games this season, playing at the Clemente Center on Saturday, May 24th (7:00PM), Sunday, June 8th (5:00PM) and Wednesday, June 11th (7:00PM). Tickets for all game are available on the Blue Ducks website at ww.BrevardBlueDucks.com or by calling (321) 751-BLUE.

John Starks: for this overachiever, "The Dunk" not only spurred the Knicks, but made his career
Basketball Digest , Sept-Oct, 2004 by Chuck O'Donnell THEY MADE A NICE POSTER OF that dunk I had for the New York Knicks against the Chicago Bulls in the 1993 playoffs. They call it 'The Dunk." I think they're still making money off that poster. I have one up in my office and I look at it every day. I have it up on the wall right in front of my desk.

According to wire services, John Starks missed Game 2 of Utah's first-round playoff series against Dallas after undergoing what the team called "a minor medical procedure." Uh, "minor?" The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that Starks underwent surgery to have a testicle removed at the University of Utah Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. The report said Stark's estimated recovery time is between 72 and 96 hours. He is listed as questionable for Saturday's Game 3 in Dallas and probable for Game 4 (if necessary) next Tuesday.

First of all, the fact that Starks' postseason isn't over is amazing. Second, getting him into the mix in this lively series will only add to the fun. Finally, we're guessing Shawn Marion is breathing a little easier right about now. Luvtino 04-25-01, 04:25 PM

John Starks: Talent Or Temper?
Dan T., Auburn, NY

Ejections, fights, trash-talking, numerous flagrant and technical fouls. New York Knicks player John Starks is not your average, well-behaved, gentleman of a basketball player, although, he does have great talent.
Possibly the reason John acts this way is his journey to the NBA. He was a decent high school player in Oklahoma and went on to play some college ball. He played at Oklahoma State for a few years before transferring, looking for his big break, more action. He soon ran out of eligibility and was working moving newspapers in an Oklahoma newspaper distribution plant. He played for a while with the Golden State Warriors before being cut. He then made the Knicks as a "practice player," used to give the pros a workout at practice sessions. When he learned he'd be released, he wanted to go out in style and attempted to dunk over Patrick Ewing. In the process, he was denied and also broke his wrist. Therefore, due to the NBA rule that teams cannot release injured players, John stayed and was given another chance. He made the actual team and soon became a starter.
He becomes very pumped up and plays with a high level of intensity. He often gets into the game by means of talking trash, or committing a hard foul to prevent an easy basket. He has also gotten into a few scuffles, probably the most famous one is when he head-butted Reggie Miller. I admit this was going pretty far like the flagrant foul that broke Kenny Anderson's wrist, not to mention when he clotheslined Scottie Pippen. But he did it all for winning the game. He's a saint when compared to selfish cry babies like Derrick Coleman or Chris Webber. Starks doesn't skip practice if he doesn't feel like going. He's there constantly working hard. He has calmed down and when he stays cool, he does great things, such as help his team to the NBA Finals.

... Better Service Request Pat Ewing: One of the Best of His Time By Stephen Alford BOSTON, MASS Yeah, maybe it did happen two years too late. Maybe he should've retired in a Knick uniform instead of spending the last two years on the Seattle and Orlando bench. But do not tell me that Pat Ewing was not one of the greatest centers of his time. And I don't want to hear that nonsense that Pat cannot be considered great just because he never won a NBA championship. However, Ewing's impact went beyond the college hard wood. He was the main reason that urban teens across America sported Georgetown jackets, and because of his legacy, Georgetown was able to open the floodgates and recruit such players as David Wingate, Reggie Williams, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo, and Allen Iverson. Upon his graduation from the prestigious university, Pat Ewing was and still is regarded as the greatest and most dominating basketball player to have ever played at Georgetown, bar none.

MJ Defenders
By John Jackson
For The Sporting News
Not long ago, as the legend of Michael Jordan was taking off and he was starting to amass scoring titles the way kids collect trading cards, there was a joke making the rounds of NBA cities. The only person, the punch line went, capable of holding him under 20 points was Dean Smith, his coach at North Carolina. For many rivals, defending Jordan was like preparing for a hurricane: Secure the valuables, take cover and pray the damage isn't too bad. Naturally, some handled the difficult assignment better than others. While no one could lay claim to being a Jordan-stopper, a select few were torched less frequently and even frustrated His Airness at times. Of course, for every player to give Jordan trouble, there were at least two poor saps who offered little resistance and were flattened like roadkill. THE TOP FIVE JOE DUMARS No one was capable of stopping Jordan one-on-one, but Dumars had more success than most because he focused on playing fundamental defense and wasn't intimidated. Jordan always mentioned Dumars when asked to name his toughest defenders, but the competition also brought out the best in Jordan at times. He scored 61 points in an overtime win against the Detroit Pistons in 1987 and added a 59-point effort in 1988.
