Ford in future?
Spree the key By FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Latrell Sprewell keeps eye out for deal, perhaps to Toronto. The Knicks appear committed to drafting Texas point guard T.J. Ford and deporting Latrell Sprewell. One could very well lead to the other. Sprewell has been available for the past 13 months and his status hasn't changed as the Knicks get ready to enter Thursday's NBA draft. Knicks president Scott Layden has talked to both the Raptors and Heat about swapping draft positions and players. Toronto and Miami will select fourth and fifth, respectively. The Knicks own the ninth overall selection. There have been rumors about Sprewell and Miami's Eddie Jones being included in a deal. Another theory has Sprewell going to Toronto for a pair of average backups, Jerome Williams and Lamond Murray. In both scenarios the Knicks would move up in the draft and then select Ford. "Scott is no fool," one league official said. "If he's trading Latrell he knows he has to get an All-Star caliber player in return. Otherwise, he'd be run out of town." Toronto is looking for a veteran player to complement Vince Carter, which is why Sprewell would be a perfect fit. The same league official believes that Sprewell could be dealt to the Raptors if the Knicks were to receive center Antonio Davis in return.

Jordan, Bird, Magic, Worthy... Dr.J... and from Milwaukee, you probably don't remember this guy - Brian Winters. He was a shooter. Jeff: Any specific moves you tried to steal from people back then?

The symptoms are:
(1) Buying a shoe or a hamburger because an athlete endorses it.
(2) Paying to see more than three live sporting events in a year.
(3) Ordering Pay-Per-View for a sporting event.
It is not easy to admit being dumb. The temptation to go to a live event will be great. Intervention may be necessary. Dumbness can be cured. The first step to a happy healthy life is refusing to buy anything directly associated with sports. Do not go to any live sporting event unless the tickets were free. Watch all the sports you want, at home on free TV. Use the money you save from overpriced tickets to buy yourself a gift. You will feel rewarded knowing your entertainment dollar was not used to pay millions to unruly athletes. If the sports addiction is to great and you or yours is to dumb to see their problem, there is always the Betty Ford Clinic.

    Lesson of Sprewell
America in Search of a Moral Compass
By Richard Rodriguez Date: 12-22-97 It is easy to pontificate about the failings of a single individual like Latrell Sprewell. But events like the death of Diana and Mother Theresa and the Promise Keepers march drive home the key lesson of the year Americans know that there is something profoundly wrong with the entire American family and we yearn for a sense of moral direction that will set things right again. PNS editor Richard Rodriguez, author of Days of Obligation (Viking-Penguin), writes for Harper's, the Los Angeles Times, and the PBS News Hour with Jim Lehrer. SAN FRANCISCO After Latrell Sprewell, a black basketball player for the Golden State Warriors, tried to choke his white coach, P.J. Carlissimo, the nation's sports pages were filled with the usual sermonizing. The million dollar thug is a bad role model, etc., etc. My own view is that the moral life of this country is not created by role models. The heroes and heroines of any society merely summarize the moral tone of the entire community. Or to put matters plainly: If a society's athletes are becoming monsters, chances are pretty good that the society around them is not much better. We are, surely, individually responsible for our moral behavior. But as members of a society, we also influence one another, establish taboos or violate them in ways that are hurtful or helpful to the general moral tone. The corrupt policeman in Tijuana and the black drug dealer in San Diego are ultimately moral partners with the cocaine yuppies in La Jolla.

When The 'Attitute' Comes to Basketball, Watch Out
    By Ri'chard Magee
Date: 12-18-97 Loud and repeated criticism of one basketball player's threat to his coach may actually mask the fact that basketball has undergone a style change, one that reflects the increasingly pervasive attitude of hip hop. The problem goes well beyond the professional sport, according to PNS correspondent Ri'chard Magee, himself a rapper and avid basketball player, and is changing the playground game as well. Magee writes for YO! (Youth Outlook), a monthly newspaper by and about young people published by PNS. Oakland, Ca. Maybe you had to have a foot in both worlds to see it coming. But as a rapper who loves basketball, I was not surprised at Latrell Sprewell's aggressive actions toward his coach. The culture of hip hop has worked its way into the NBA. It started off in ways that were almost invisible a hairstyle here, a statement there. Then, all of a sudden, there was Kevin Garnett mugging for the camera, bare-chested, with his $7,000 plus gold chain swinging from his neck, Allan Iverson with his swaggering attitude toward the older players (even Jordan himself!). Given that most players coming into the league now are 20 or younger, and a large percentage of them grew up in the inner cities where hip hop shapes all the rules of their reality, this should come as no surprise. There are even some basketball players, like Shaq and J.R. Rider, who rap themselves and have put out tapes.

Kobe Bryant, like OJ did, stands at the crossroads of two American myths: Kobe is a Black man accused of raping a White woman and a beloved sports-figure. What happens when America's dream meets America's nightmare? When God Bless America meets Birth of a Nation? What does race have to do with it? The media would have us believe - nothing. When Latrell Sprewell, an African-American professional basketball player, put his hands around the throat of his coach P.J. Carlesimo, he was given the harshest sentence in the history of the NBA. Although an arbitrator reduced his suspension from one year to seven months, Sprewell's fine of 6.4 million dollars was the largest in the history of professional sports. The public and media reaction was swift and almost uniformly condemnatory. As Peter H. King wrote in the Los Angeles Times, "One might think he had stabbed his wife to death." Sprewell became a symbol first for the perceived "thug" mentality of the NBA (which term was somehow only applied to Black players), then for "violent Black male athletes" and by extension for all Black violence. Lurid headlines read: "Open Season: Patients Now Running the NBA Asylum", "Sprewell Story an Analogy for World Gone Mad", "Gang Chic as a Marketing Tool".

A guard-forward, he currently plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves Sprewell entered the league in out of the University of Alabama . He was drafted 24th overall in the first round by the Golden State Warriors . Sprewell made an immediate impact, starting 69 of the 77 games he played in during his rookie season and scoring 15.4 ppg. Though a four-time All-Star, Sprewell's career has been permanently overshadowed by an incident on December 1 , when he attacked Coach P.J. Carlesimo during a Warriors practice. When Carlesimo yelled at Sprewell to make crisper passes, Sprewell responded that he wasn't in the mood for criticism and told the coach to keep his distance. When Carlesimo approached, Sprewell threatened to kill him and dragged him to the ground by his throat, choking him for 10-15 seconds before his teammates pulled Sprewell off his coach. Sprewell returned about 20 minutes later and landed a glancing blow at Carlesimo before being dragged away again. Sprewell was suspended for 10 days without pay. The next day, in the wake of a public uproar, the Warriors voided the remainder of his contract, which included $23.7 million over three years, and the

Mad About the Sprewell Case? Blame Labor Unions
by David W. Almasi Basketball all-star Latrell Sprewell, fired by his team and suspended from play for a year by the NBA for choking his coach, had his sentence reduced and contract reinstated by the ruling of a union-mandated arbitrator. While the sporting world is in shock, this perversion of justice is nothing new for organized labor. Unions have used arbitration as a means of choking off dissent for years. Sprewell was penalized for throttling Golden State Warriors Coach P.J. Carlesimo twice and threatening to kill him during a team practice last year. Under the terms of a contract negotiated between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association, Sprewell's appeal was handled by an arbitrator rather than in a court of law. The arbiter believed Sprewell has already suffered enough under what he considered an excessive punishment, and is allowing Sprewell to resume playing in time for next season and collect the $16.3 million remaining on his contract with the Warriors. Players' union head Bill Hunter said the ruling "reaffirms the sanctity of guaranteed contracts in the NBA." NBA Commissioner David Stern summed it up another way: "You cannot choke your boss and keep your job unless you are an NBA player. But this is arbitration."
