Basketball
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Basketball is very popular in U.S. colleges. Here, center Kent Benson of Indiana U. shoots a hook shot. Basketball is a ball sport in which, under organized rules, two teams of five players each try to score points by throwing a ball through a hoop. It is primarily an indoor sport, played in a relatively small playing area, called the court. The speed and grace of the game, combined with the close proximity of the spectators to the action, make basketball an exciting spectator sport. It is one of the most popular sports in the United States , and is also popular in other parts of the world, including South America Europe Asia , and the former Soviet republics

Conseco Fieldhouse History With 750,000 square feet and 18,345 seats, this is a fairly new house that is, remarkably, an old home. Conseco Fieldhouse, opened Nov. 6, 1999, when the Indiana Pacers hosted the Boston Celtics, is a step into the future while taking a walk back into history. It's big, yet comfortable. It has all the modern appliances, yet there's that favorite old picture on the wall. It is a building that is unique in today's sports society because the extra effort was made to make it that way. In other words, if you have a religion, you must build the appropriate cathedral. In Indiana, basketball is religion. Conseco Fieldhouse is the cathedral. That's what makes the home of the Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever unique.

The Road to Excellence The Indiana Pacers joined the NBA for the 1976-77 season as one of four former American Basketball Association franchises to cross over when the two leagues merged. The three-time ABA champions struggled from the beginning in the NBA, posting only one winning season in their first 13 NBA campaigns. After a decade and a half of failure, the team finally began to play .500 ball in the early 1990s. By mid-decade, the Pacers had become one of the Eastern Conference's top clubs. From 1994-2000, they reached the conference finals five times, won two Central Division titles and advanced to the NBA Finals in 2000. When the Pacers began play in the ABA's inaugural 1967-68 season, they had already been preceded by two Indianapolis NBA teams. In 1948-49 the Indianapolis Jets had compiled an 18-42 record in their only year of existence. The next year the Indianapolis Olympians began play, winning the NBA's Western Division with a 39-25 record. The Olympians folded in 1953 after four seasons.

Great Moments in Indiana Pacers History
1988 - Newcomers Chuck "the Rifleman" Person, a rookie, and John Long, who had come to the Pacers after eight seasons with the Detroit Pistons, were the team's scoring leaders. Person, a 6-8 225-pounder out of Auburn, led the team in scoring with 18.8 points per game and was named NBA Rookie of the Year. Williams, Tisdale, Stipanovich, and Fleming all provided double-figure scoring support. With the 11th overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft, Indiana chose scoring machine Reggie Miller, a 6-7 guard from UCLA. Miller came from an athletic family: his sister, Cheryl, was once considered the dominant player in women's college basketball, and his brother, Darrell, had been a catcher in Major League Baseball. Reggie Miller had both a delicate shooting touch and a tough competitive nature, and he became one of the league's top offensive threats. The 1987-88 Pacers finished at 38-44 and out of the playoffs once again. Miller played sparingly as a rookie, backing up Long and averaging 10.0 points. Person led the team in scoring for a second consecutive season with 17.0 points per game, followed closely by Tisdale with 16.1.

Basketball's foul-out rule should be benched.
    By Dennis Hans
Posted Thursday, June 14, 2001, at 8:30 PM PT
On the eve of the NBA Finals, Philadelphia 76ers head coach Larry Brown said, "Dikembe staying in the game with Shaq, that's the key that everybody is focused on. It really depends on the referees and how they call the game. When I had Rik Smits against Shaquille, he fouled out in warm-ups." In this postseason, games have turned around when such seasoned pros as Arvydas Sabonis, Dale Davis, John Stockton, Ervin Johnson, Sam Cassell, and David Robinson—not to mention Shaquille O'Neal and Dikembe Mutombo—were forced to sit for a spell or the duration. None were roughhousing. All were aware of the importance of staying on the court. But if you play you're going to get whistled, and sometimes you're going to draw one too many fouls at a pivotal moment in a pivotal game. That's why the NBA's foul-out rule should be amended or abolished. Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate')

I wasn't prepared to agree with Bob Batchelor. When he e-mail me and told me about his book, which postulates that basketball has now replaced baseball as America's game, I was more than happy to review it, but I was very skeptical of his hypothesis. I still tear up every time I watch "Field of Dreams." That speech James Earl Jones gives at the end about how baseball has been the lone constant in an America that has been wiped clean and rebuilt time and time again - that movie always leaves me feeling that baseball is truly America's game. And then I read this book . . .
Basketball in America begins with Michael Jordan. Sensible enough, given that Jordan is one of the most recognizable faces on the planet. It's not just a tribute to the man, though, it's an in-depth look at how he changed basketball forever. When Jordan's Bulls defeated Magic's Lakers in the 1991 NBA Finals we witnessed, unknowingly, what Batchelor calls a "defining moment." Jordan was a player of destiny, and he seemed to have to power to stop destiny or change destiny as he saw fit. He became an icon, a true hero in a world starved for heroes. The beginning of his reign as the best athlete on the planet put the NBA on the global front page for the first time and made Nike a household name. What many people don't know is that when Nike wrote Jordan that first check for $250,000 for five years they were putting the entire future of the company in his hands. If Jordan hadn't become Michael Jordan Nike would be no more.

Who is Yao Ming? by Ric Bucher ESPN The Magazine
Everybody always wants a comparison the natural human need to label, stamp and pigeonhole is too strong to resist. "Who’s he like?" they ask when it comes to a budding NBA player. Such comparisons are never fair, nor particularly accurate, but despite all that they are often indelible. Which is why they’re dangerous.
No one has inspired that question, of course, more than 7'5" center Yao Ming , largely because so few people on this side of the Pacific have seen him play. By now he has been cast as someone akin to Nellie doghouse dweller Shawn Bradley and the incredibly shrinking ex-Pacer Rik Smits . The reasons are obvious all three are unusually tall (Smits is 7'4", Bradley is 7'6"), all played against weak competition (Smits at Marist, Bradley for one year at BYU) and all are from foreign countries (Smits is Dutch, Bradley is from Castle Dale, Utah).
Having seen Yao play both in his Chicago workout and with the Shanghai Sharks in China, I’d like to offer a few more names

Rating the New Basketball Cards By Dick Hunt The newest set of Strat-O-Matic basketball cards has arrived! The first thing I noticed at a glance was that there were more 2-12 free throw shooters than there usually are. Most of those had very few attempts, of course, thanks to the short schedule, but perfection is perfection! The second thing that stood out was the durability everyone seemed to display. With fewer games to endure, players had a lot fewer injury problems. I wonder if the NBA will take that as a sign? Nahhhh, probably not... ATLANTA (31-19): Mookie Blaylock got a 1 shooting rating and a decent shooting card, especially when you consider his lousy 37.9 field goal percentage. Steve Smith makes up for it, drawing fouls very well. He also has a 2-9,12 free throw shooting rating to back it up. Grant Long was a nice surprise, getting a good card for the first time in years. Like Smith, Long could make a living on his ability to draw fouls. However, if you have Grant Long on your draft team, now would be an excellent time to deal him. Sucker someone into taking his good 1998-99 card and ignoring the rest of his mediocre career.
